I believe that the main reason werewolves are so out of place in Dragon Age is because they've only been featured in one game. If they show up again in the future and are a little more common then they might not seem so out of place, id personally would like to see more maybe even go as far as having a main character be one and us having to free them from the curse. just a thought. anyway great video as always!
@@caylalynn5340 I was responding to the op about there being no werewolves in DA 2. I mean you come across former werewolves if you break the curse in Origins but if you don't they should still be werewolves.
@@deathsdoor07 true, but the way they put them in is highly specific, and very easy to miss. I do agreed that the werewolves feel really out of place, but I think it's more of a writing issue, than anything else. Since DA:O started as a DnD game, but then got swapped after the right fell through, I think a lot of stuff had to be kinda quickly rewritten, and suffered from it. They've ironed a lot of that out, but I think the werewolves are one thing that needs work.
What about the Cousland history with the werewolves? Mather and/or Haelia Cousland imposed curfews and patrols and/or led the banns in hunting down the werewolves. If the human noble has enough cunning (15 I think), he or she can answer Aldous saying Highever became a teyrnir during the lycanthropy plagues. This also shows that the lands of Highever endured a plague of werewolfism.
Whatever happened to the werewolves- I guess since they're cured we'll just call them ex-Werewolves or Wolf Men or something- AFTER the Fifth Blight ended? I read or watched something, somewhere that said they all moved to Gwaren to help rebuild in Loghain's absence and were the main reason it succeeded, since apparently these 'wolf-men' can do things like control animals and hunt better than anyone and essentially have an upgrade to every bodily function...or all the perks of the guy from teen wolf I dont fuckin know. Imagine if one of them couldn't just DROP the fact that he's been a literal maneating monster and apex predator for who knows how long, well past his natural lifespan, and now has to be taught how to be 'human again' while trying not to eat people out of habit. If this doesn't scream potential companion or future awesome story arc, I don't know what does.
Since we didn’t really get a new companion during “The Nature of the Beast” Main Quest (We got Wynne and Oghren during the other two main quests) I kinda hoped to get a werewolf among us (If choosing to side with Witherfang and the Werewolves) I mean, we had a fckin Golem as a companion, so why not a Beast? Besides, when I was playing the Darkspawn Chronicles DLC, I got a Shriek as a companion, and it had the same animations and attacks as the werewolves, And I have to say that they were the best companion during a fight, killing everything with almost no effort.
I think only a few wardens were allowed to ride griffons, not because they weren’t skilled enough but because the griffons wouldn’t take to them, like untamed horses. (haven’t read the book, only know what I’ve gotten from the wiki)
I know this is a not a new video now, but remembering origins creatures makes me wonder as well what happened to all the sylvans. I'd love a video on them
The werewolf legend reminds me of an old Celtic legend. Prince Pryderi stole a stag from a pack of dogs to feed his own hounds but King Arawn of Annwn (Hell) told him he needed to make up for his mistake. He had Pryderi take his role as king for a year so that he would fight an opponent of Arawn's for him while Arawn took Pryderi's place. I can't remember the rest but that's the gist of it.
The irish/celtic werewolves were actually benevolent creatures compared to the classic ones we all know. They have their human conscience even in beast form, they help lost travelers to their way out of the forest, and they help children if they’re lost or hurt, protecting them from their aggressors. And they’re peaceful creatures unless attacked. They kind of remind me of DA:O Werewolves because they’ve regained their humanity thanks to the Lady of the Forest, and they’re willing to swear an oath to the Grey Wardens to help them against the Blight.
What about what Morrigan says about shapeshifting in Origins in that she explains how she would take on a another animals form via observing other animals and changing into them and when asked if she could change into another human she says "Why would I do that I have a human form already that allows me to walk among humans?" Also when Morrgian get shapeshifter master your spider, & bear form change to the blighted versions of them animals
You nailed my thoughts on Zathrian!! he was a moron!! was so glad to see him die at the end of that quest! Witherfang was one of my all time favorite dragon age characters!
@@deathsdoor07 I do like the theory that magic can cause unintended side affects when used. Like casting fire ball one place can cause an ice furry somewhere else.
@@deathsdoor07 he should’ve known better than use blood magic to create the curse. You may never truly know the consequences of your actions, even having the right to avenge his family.
I'm a bit surprised you don't see werewolves more often in Thedas considering Ferelden's apparent attachment towards canines in their culture so imo it doesn't seem too far fetched for multiple forms of the lycanthropy curse to exist considering Highever had a problem with them for a while which led to the Couslands/Howe's working together on dealing with it
Aww. No nice werewolves? Darn. -1 point from me Dragon Age. It’s still cool lore, but werewolves are my favorite supernatural creature and I like them to be good guys sometimes.
My interpretation is that Dane didn't lead a campaign against the werewolves because he disliked them, Dane let a campaign against the werewolves because he didn't want the curse to reverse after the initial year, or maybe it never did it all as a coin that can't be unspent.
So 3 years late, but Morrigan explains that she just doesnt transform into other humans because she would have nothing to learn from them, not that she cant do it
I usually side with the Elves in all things. Not the biggest fan of humans even at the best of times. Now that I see they’re just sick, I want to help them. My next playthrough will be to save both the elves and the humans.
Would be cool of they brought back Origin backstories and one them was having the Werewolf curse. Elaborating on that, every Origin could have it’s own specialization.
I think maybe vampirism could fit well with blood magic, like it’s something a blood mage can eventually become and those which are bitten by the mage becomes a vampire below them, so there’s like a power scaling and a rank of command.
How do you feel about werebeasts ingeneral and do you not like werewolves in general or do you think they are over played? I kinda wanna get into fantasy creation.
It's probably weird to comment on a million year old video, but w/e. I wouldn't necessarily say they're out of place, but they're definitely unnecessary. I generally feel like werewolves are included way too often in fantasy for no good reason and with no serious attempt to integrate them into the fabric of the lore. They're not really a core part of the genre though, so you can't get away with just adding them for the hell of it like you can with dragons, magic, knights, and so on and so forth.
0:50 its not powerful to ambush defenseless children. TBH I'm a bit disturbed that you would even consider that "powerful", cowardly is closer to the truth.
The werewolves we see in the game had nothing to do with the crimes their ancestors committed against Zathrian’s children. Even some of them are infected Dalish elves
Nobel: "on all levels except physical, I am a wolf"

The werewolf that took dane's place for a year could have been the one looking to destroy werewolves to keep dane's place forever
If the Griffins hate the blight, then how do wardens ride them?
Because they hate the blight! Don't think they cower from the blight, they fuck that shit up.
