This was very helpful on helping me to choose the best free video editor that would be best for me, and I like how you got straight to the point about it without a super long drawn out introduction at the beginning. LOL Awesome!
I find Resolve to be incredibly intuitive, actually. I try as hard as I can to be as Open Source as possible in my life, but professionally Resolve blows the doors so far off the competition that I couldn't justify the extra time it takes to do the same job in something like Kdenlive.
If you are into animation and 3D work then Blender is spot on to create videos, I use Openshot, Kdenlive, Natron and now DaVinci 16 on my older workhorse HP Laptop. Good Video Keep it up
Wow - seeing the titles and transitions in Openshot made it feel like iMovie - especially seeing the "Far Far Away" Star Wars rolling titles. I mean, what dad HASN'T videod their kids running around with plastic light sabers and added a few sound effects - even if they don't make the lightsabers all glowy. Thanks for that! I wouldn't have considered OpenShot otherwise!
I edited my first videos years ago in Openshot. At the time the software was very buggy, crashed frequently, messed up the timeline etc. When I eventually revisited more recently to update an old project I had to find it would refuse to load that old project. At one point Openshot had become so unusably instable to me that I had to look for alternatives and anyway, I was no longer the basic user that Openshot was aimed at. So kdenlive was the next stop on my journey. Also buggy and in some versions superbuggy it pulled countless hours of work and the one or other saved project file into a binary grave. Overall it appears the number of bugs is constant, they're just migrating from one part to another in the software and quite often impacting the usability for me. And while that is really bad, for the one bug I once reported - which really was a problem in MLT - the response was pretty swift and satisfying. Now that I'm working on increasingly more complex projects I find the timeline is getting too complex so I'd want better supply for more complex projects. Finally blender. blender is a full blown 3D and lately also 2D animation software about on par with many of the big players on that market. But the VSE is more of an addon. The audio capabilities are lacking compared to kdenlive so much of the audio work has to be done externally in software such audacity. Where of course it is impossible to see the video which is making some things really hard. The blender VSE support has not been actively maintained for a while so in 2.79b things, the latest release as of this writing, is pretty rough and underfeatured in many ways. For 2.80 which currently in beta there's a new maintainer and some annoying bugs have already been fixed, some features enhanced so there's hope on the horizon. The one feature that sets blender's VSE aside from the others is that blender integrates with the Python programming language. I've used this to automate some stuff where VSE was lacking compared to kdenlive but thanks to a few lines of Python actually became superior. Finally it should be mentioned blender in some ways is odd to be used. Up unto 2.79b the default was to select with the right mouse button, it's ultra heavy on hot keys, terminology used and more. So it's a bit selective in who its friends are ;-) What I absolutely love are blender's metastrip which combine a number of clips and effects into a single strip object on the timeline. Awesome to keep overview over a complex project. If they're not eating your project. Most missed feature from kdenlive in blender: align to reference audio - which is absolutely awesome if you're working with an external audio recorder. The biggest problen for many users blender is like a 300,000 ton ship when I rubber boat is asked for. The learning curve is tremendous - but expected for a software which with motion tracking can do some Hollywood-class effects.
I've noticed the stability of all of these programs has improved significantly over the past few years. I really appreciate your input on Blender, and couldn't agree more.
Thanks for this breakdown, Ryndon. I've been getting acquainted with ShotCut over the past week, thanks to your videos. Being a dedicated Adobe CC user, it's taking some getting use to, but I really like it so far. That said, are you still using Kdenlive as your "go-to video editor", or has that changed since this video?
To me I see Shotcut as a general purpose video editing tool with a lot of room to grow, and Blender probably into the sort of 3d layer based, compositing finishing and visual effects field like Flame, Nuke and After Effects.
@therealZENA Since I wrote that comment I switched to Kdenlive and the one I've being using for a long time for very basic editing and video encoding AVIdemux .. and ffmpeg (command line) when needed.
Choosing which Linux distro to install, and which video editing software to install, is a lot to chew over. And it is great to have these choices (would suck to be limited). I imagine that these developers seek to outdo each other, which benefits us all. Is it safe to install multiple video applications, in order to test each one? I do not mean run them at the same time -- just have them all installed at the same time, so that I could easily switch back and forth to see which one I prefer. Will they have conflicts with each other, or will they simply each have their own dedicated installation directories, etc, and not even see each other? Also, will the choice of the Linux distro affect the performance or the stability of the video editing packages, in a significant way. By significant, I mean will a video render take 25% longer on one distro vs. another. Or are any distros known to result in these video editors to be unstable or crash? I am probably going with either MX Linux or Parrot (I like their anon surf feature). Both are Debian based. Thank you.
Great video! I am just starting out and looking for tools. Some are extremely expensive and beyond my affordability. Some the ones in your video will perfectly fit my needs. Thanks! Update: Downloaded Kdenlive and the program was not anywhere on the MAC? Downloaded Openshot and installed but could not be opened on OS 14.1 because of security reasons. Told to contact provider.
I've been using Openshot but in some ways its not very intuitive. I still can't figure out how to seamlessly add text to videos. The text wants to come up only during transitions and weird stuff like that. Also the program has a tendency to get bogged down very easily. I have to be very careful about what I do or else the program will stop responding and I will have to wait for it to start functioning again.
Good overview thank you. How does Shotcut compare to Kdenlive in terms of resources ? I've tried Blender and my laptop is not up to spec, Openshot continuously (it will be my laptop) crashed so I'm now using Kdenlive and was wondering if shotcut is less resource hungry and simpler to use. Thank you!!!
My feeling is that they are similar as far a resources needed/used. I have ran Kdenlive on very old hardware, virtual machines, raspberry pi, Chromebook, without issue. I haven't tested Shotcut in the same way yet.
Returning to leave a comment to say thank you for uploading this video where I was able to find the right editing software for me. Been using it for a week now. Cheers!
I've started using shotcut and I think it's not as powerful for the type of videos I wanted to make. But I might start using Kden and see how that goes
Resolve does not have a trial version, it has a free version you can keep forever. Your phrasing might throw someone from using it: "if I can't keep it why learn it?" But I use blender so ye
As someone who recently started making simple slideshow videos with text titles and music, I have tried openshot, kdenlive and shotcut. I think all of them have serious usability issues, shotcut the worst, openshot seemingly more simple but with lots of annoying quirks (plus the final renders differ way too much from the project edits). I kind of got along with kdenlive, but the windows version is seriously unstable and failed completely at rendering anything (tried the Linux version in a VM, seemed better). None of them are really easy to use. Will give resolve a try, but as it is geared towards professionals, it might be overkill. Or I just have to accept the fact that video editing beyond the simplest task is actually a complicated topic and takes time to learn (just like I spent years learning my Digital Audio Workstation)... ;)
Hey geiles Video danke für die Vorstellung dieser Programme!!! Wie hast du den Tür Effekt bei 2:20 hinbekommen? Genial! Edit: ShotCut Lesson 11 ich habs gefunden!!!
Thanks for this explanation but just a question I am using DaVinci but is working very Slow on my Laptop. Now 3 times in one video after I edit the project once I am rendering the video is getting slow and doesn't want to continue . So what is the best app, which one of the above you think work better.

I tried to download the Shotcut app. I have a trouble to do that. I have a Mac Book Air. Could you tell me what's the trouble. I really want to have the app and learn the editing. Please advise.

free software means what? can i upload them? everyone said filmora9 is a free video editor. when i make a video, try to do upload or save as a video file, it was upsetting. it gives watermark. it is mean its not free. as you recommend its free, those are really free?
I have a 2 minute video and I have a 30 minute audio. Which one of these video editor would allow me to stretch or continuously loop that video to keep playing and end the same time as my audio? I have tried the free video editor on my Windows 10 computer, but my 2 minute video ends and leaves me with a black screen. But, my audio just kept on playing to the very end.
At the time of looking for another editing suit after my paid version of power director wouldn't allow for 4k editing resolve was the only one offering lut support, so i got used to it and haven't looked back since. Every so often i do look as i have to have time line res in 1/2 or 1/4 resolution. The one thing that does annoy me is the lock on FX's, so that may make me change over at some point to be brutishly honest.
Hello. How can I start from scratch a green screen on Kdenlive or shotcut or Blender. I remark that I hav fewer effect on Kdenlive than when I watch your video's. Yesterday Kdenlive crashed several times when I used Obscure and mask. Also Mask did not move with the face very well. If you want to move the mask along the video it gives me some not good results, but I suppose I do something wrong. Thanks for responding. Greetings.
Hi Soni, good question. I recorded this video using a DSLR camera in 1080p 60 fps and then also did the screen recording in OBS at 1080p 60 fps. I edited the video together using Shotcut, and set the Settings > Video Mode to 'HD 1080p 60fps'. Even if the video was was 720p 24 fps, for example, it would have still be upscaled to 1080p 60fps in Shotcut under that video mode.
I think I would like Davinci, but it won't open a .mov file from a DJI drone. I can drop the file on EVERY other editor you listed and it simply works... but not Davinci. Do you have any thoughts of where I could look to get that working? (I'm running linux mint 19.1) Thanks in advance!
Hmm, I'm not sure. I've been able to work with DJI footage in Resolve in the past, but I think it was on Windows. I know Linux Mint is not officially supported by Resolve, but people are able to run it on there without issue. I wonder if its a configuration bug.
Hi John. I don't have much experience with VSDC. It looks like its Windows only and limited free. For someone starting out with video editing, I'd recommend Shotcut. Shotcuts interface is very standard, making it easy to migrate to/from other video editing platforms in the future if needed.
@@TJFREE I have a 32 bit PC with 2 GB ram and just started using VSDC. It works fine on my PC. Should I shift to shotcut or continue with VSDC according to my PC requirements and features.
Hi! Can u please tell me which of these supports VST audio plugins with automation (I'm a musician looking for a Video Editor that has similar to DAW workflow) & which one would be most fun & easiest to make vlogs with?? 🙏🙏🙏
OpenShot - if you can aid. I have for example 5 minutes video. Cutted it into 3 parts of 20 sec. Then I need to Slow all these three parts! "Time -> slow -> forward - > 1/8" - and after I export the video, that video messed up, sometimes no video (black screen) or the other parts of the original uncut version merged into modified three 20 seconds parts .... thanks
Even if you pay for Resolve, it's still much cheaper than Adobe Premier and it includes free updates for life but you need a beefy GPU if you plan on using Resolve

free software means what? can i upload them? everyone said filmora9 is a free video editor. when i make a video, try to do upload or save as a video file, it was upsetting. it gives watermark. it is mean its not free. as you recommend its free, those are really free?
Which of these have capability to adjust the sound/audio. is it only kden?
Good question, all of these video editors support audio tracks that allow for sound adjustment and enhancement.
Do any of these have a coding interface or backend?
Hi Troy. Good question. Shotcut and Kdenlive both use the MLT framework, and the output code easy easily accessible and modifiable.
Davinci Resolve 15 is bay far the best video editor in 2019
WRONG! Davinci Resolve 16 is.
in which soft i can use voiceover? anyone!
My favourite without a doubt is resolve, no buts no ifs hahaha
Resolve makes a lot of sense if you want to do color grading and compositing and video editing in the same workflow.
Greetings.
I find kdenlive better on windows, since shotcut keeps crashing especially with transitions.
Thanks for this!!
Thx for sharing. Great Help.
Thank you very much
Thanks
Vsdc is good right
VSDC is fun and quiet is easy to use. Works perfectly in slow computers.
Will you make new tutorials on DaVinci Resolve?
Yes, I'll add more Resolve video editing tutorials in the future, and am also considering making a Resolve color grading tutorial series.
@@TJFREE Cool super :)
Un bonjour de France ;)
Hi Rendon, May i know which software you used to convert this video into 1080p60fps?
Hi Soni, good question. I recorded this video using a DSLR camera in 1080p 60 fps and then also did the screen recording in OBS at 1080p 60 fps. I edited the video together using Shotcut, and set the Settings > Video Mode to 'HD 1080p 60fps'. Even if the video was was 720p 24 fps, for example, it would have still be upscaled to 1080p 60fps in Shotcut under that video mode.
@@TJFREE- I am using 4GB RAM in PC. Will it work?
@@rocky20717 Yes, Shotcut should work on 4gb of RAM. You can also try Kdenlive, it should work as well.
@@TJFREE - Thank you so much, Rendon
I want to learn just one video tutorial to all of my need and not to switch to another in future. Which one you suggest ?
U better try lightworks
I think I would like Davinci, but it won't open a .mov file from a DJI drone. I can drop the file on EVERY other editor you listed and it simply works... but not Davinci. Do you have any thoughts of where I could look to get that working? (I'm running linux mint 19.1)
Thanks in advance!
Hmm, I'm not sure. I've been able to work with DJI footage in Resolve in the past, but I think it was on Windows. I know Linux Mint is not officially supported by Resolve, but people are able to run it on there without issue. I wonder if its a configuration bug.
Thank you for posting this video. What is your opinion of VSDC? I'm a newbie and am trying to find a video editor that suits my purpose.
Hi John. I don't have much experience with VSDC. It looks like its Windows only and limited free. For someone starting out with video editing, I'd recommend Shotcut. Shotcuts interface is very standard, making it easy to migrate to/from other video editing platforms in the future if needed.
@@TJFREE - Thank you for your very prompt and courteous response. I think I'll give Shotcut a try. Thanks again. Cheers.
@@TJFREE I have a 32 bit PC with 2 GB ram and just started using VSDC. It works fine on my PC. Should I shift to shotcut or continue with VSDC according to my PC requirements and features.
obrigada pelos seus vídeos ! amo seu canal :3 🇧🇷
Hi! Can u please tell me which of these supports VST audio plugins with automation (I'm a musician looking for a Video Editor that has similar to DAW workflow) & which one would be most fun & easiest to make vlogs with?? 🙏🙏🙏
@vj mag but I don't use Linux though..? So which ones support VST for Windows?
Nice!
OpenShot - if you can aid. I have for example 5 minutes video. Cutted it into 3 parts of 20 sec. Then I need to Slow all these three parts! "Time -> slow -> forward - > 1/8" - and after I export the video, that video messed up, sometimes no video (black screen) or the other parts of the original uncut version merged into modified three 20 seconds parts .... thanks
THANKS!!!
does shotcut work in windows (32-bit)???
Even if you pay for Resolve, it's still much cheaper than Adobe Premier and it includes free updates for life but you need a beefy GPU if you plan on using Resolve
Just subscribed. Make more awesome content!!!
Why you did not include HitFilm Express? 🤯
Good question. I don't feel like it offers anything more than what these 5 do. I also don't like how they keep moving features behind the paywall.
@@TJFREE Exactly TJ. Thats a kinda deceitful tactic by Hitfilm.
wow.. linux on chromebook for video editing? can't imagine how laggy would be, no?
Tq
32 bit available
Yes, I believe all have 32 bit options, except for maybe Resolve.
this was made on my bday!!
lol
Nice, Happy Late Birthday!
