- The cypress sphinx also known as the baldcypress sphinx is a rare insect that can be found in cypress swamps from coastal Maryland to south Florida. The bald cypress trees within these swamps are water and rot- resistant. They have been dubbed “Wood Eternal” for their strength. The cypress sphinx is the only known caterpillar to feed off the bald cypress tree. As a caterpillar, the cypress sphinx feeds on the needles of the tree, before transforming into a brownish-gray moth. The moth has a wingspan of 2 to 3 inches, and is a pollinator.
