      @Kikn Back, out of the nine sections on the ASVAB test, you need to focus on four of them for the AFQT score, which is the entry score to enlist - The higher the score = more rating opportunities. The four sections are:
      AR (Arithmetic Reasoning)
      MK (Mathematics Knowledge)
      PC (Paragraph Comprehension)
      WK (Word Knowledge)

    My recommendation to everyone joining is to go active duty first. The reserves can be confusing, you're on your own and 95% of the time you're the bottom of the totem pole and deploy to the crappiest locations. You'll always be wanting more. And depending on your civilian job the reserves can be a blessing or a burden. But I just learned things about the reserves from you that my CoC and NOSC never told me and I've been in for 5 years. Kinda reiterates my point of being on your own unless you have good leadership that actually cares.

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +4

      @John A, well said! I recommend Active Duty mainly for the benefits such as the Post 9-11 GI Bill. No matter how many times I tell individuals, they believe the Reserves receive identical benefits as Active members.

      I wish I had done SELRES before joining AD. I loved the Reserves and would go back in a heart beat. In 12 yrs on the reserve side I did 8 deployments and enjoyed it more than AD where I didn't even get to deploy at all. I also got into federal LE thanks to the reserves and some MAs I was with with in Djibouti while I was an MA3.

    I habody d to get an age waiver when I enlisted in the reserves. I was mobilized one time and had to go to Japan, Okinawa and south Korea. It was "Operation Team Spirit". I was a second class interior communications electrician. I guess the navy needed somebody with an electrical and operating engineer background. I loved it. I was also a member of the reserve centers color guard. If I could get back in, I would do it in a heartbeat, but I don't think the navy needs a 72 year old electrician/engineer!

    Great information Chief!! The retirement 7500 point ratio seems to be a tricky proposition. To achieve hitting that ballpark, would an individual have to pick up a couple mobilizations per contract (2-3) to put themselves into the ball park? Thank you for the video!

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  4 роки тому +8

      Colin, actually I had a brain fart... it’s 7,300 points = 20-years active duty retirement. If you did ten one year mobilizations you would earn 25% retirement 💰, but remember you would also calculate in your drill points, AT’s, any other ADT orders, correspondence courses, Navy Funerals, etc.

    I was recalled 3 times to London, Fujairah & Bahrain for 3 & half years. I attribute my activations to my rate as an IT. So if you want to get called up & assigned to nice places, consider switching to IT rate. I was put up in nice apartments & received per diems for each activation. It was a rewarding career, shipmates. It was for me a paid vacation almost every year in my 28 year career as a reservist.

    This Laura Zorza youtube feature of Navy Reserves-How Often Are Navy Reservist Deployed is both eye opening and easily makes clear some of what to expect for a navy reservist expecting to andor preferring to mobilize at the earliest opportunity. I confess that I am actually receptive to mobilizing at the earliest opportunity, still the blunt yet also helpful explanation giving in this video on why it is vital to be receptive to mobilizing either stateside andor overseas as a navy reservist furthers my understanding on some of the things to be more rationally and intuitively aware of.

      Thanks for the response Chief. I’ve heard some gouge about certain rates that are forced to deploy or mobilize regardless of the 2 year period after leaving active. And I’m coming from the aviation side. So the questions I have are:
      1. Can choice of rate cancel the 2 year no deployment status?
      2. When considering choosing a rate like QM can I serve the minimum time and still learn that rate or would I have to invest in more training / other orders?
      3. What is the reserve fleet like?
      I ask these questions because I am taking an opportunity to further some other training and schooling I need to ultimately become a Chaplain. So I should be cognizant of the responsibility’s of choosing a rate.
      Thanks for any information you can give!

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  4 роки тому +3

      @Ryan Mack, I have only known two Sailors that were "forced" to mobilize and that was because of poor leadership.
      I am sure you have all the information, but in case you don't: www.public.navy.mil/bupers-npc/career/transition/Pages/ReserveAffiliationBenefits.aspx
      If you decide on QM you will need to be attached to an ACU or CORIVRON for hands on experience. If you live near a Naval base you "should" be attached to a ship. I served with a QM that only went to Cuba for 3-months in his entire 20+ year career as a Reservist. Then again, he didn't want to go anywhere. The Fleet will depend on where you live - as I previously stated, if you live near a Naval Base it will help. Otherwise get cross-assigned to an ACU or CORIVRON
      NOTE: CORIVRON deploy a lot though.
      There are great opportunities in the Reserves, but you often have to look for them. I am here to assist with your career and any questions you have along the way 👍

      The beauty of the Reserves is YOU pick your orders / cross-assigned unit. There are times you are voluntold what command you are attached to, this happened to me, I was attached to NCHB-5 across the country. In that case you are asked to sign a page-13, so you understand the commitment. I saw individuals that could not commit to the requirements, so they were dropped from the RUAD and found another command.

    Hi Chief, I am currently joining the Reserves as prior service after 10 years of separation. I will be a LS. My question is when I take long term mobilization orders (anything over a year) will my family be allowed to go with me?

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  2 роки тому +2

      @Ebony Young, most orders are one year or less; they depend on location, mission, and type of orders (i.e., ADT, ADOS, Mobilization, CANREC, Definite Recall, etc.)
      ADT and ADOS can renew each fiscal year if there is a need and funding available. CANREC and Definite Recall orders can be 2-3 years at a time. Also, you can do ADOS orders for one year and then transition to mobilization orders. Each type of orders have different rules.
      I know of some individuals that have their family members with them when CONUS, but it depends on the type of orders and location. FYI - ADOS orders for 180-days or more are PCS orders with HHG. Per diem and BAH is authorized for ADOS orders 179-days or less. If you do ADOS orders locally, you will receive BAH, but not per diem.
      I know of family members that have visited their Sailor when on OCONUS orders (i.e., Germany, Italy, etc.), but no, they are not authorized to go.

I have 150 days in active duty btw. So I see pluses in both but don’t know which is going to take me further career wise as far as the military side of things goes so I really am divided. @Asgaiyawaya, so much depends on your personal drive to succeed and your rating … if you go Reserves you can work the government job and volunteer for orders in the Reserves to where you want, when you want 👍 You can be successful in both worlds 💝 You can cross over to Active Duty later depending on your rate/rating and year group. The possibility is always there, so my advice is do what you feel is best for you and your family … the Navy (Active or Reserves) will always be here 👍👍💝

      @Eric Tate, I know very few GSM’s that actually do their job in the Reserves, even if mobilized. Where you live and what Navy bases are near you will play a factor on working in your rating.
      I recommend making a list of pros and cons on why you want to serve and what you hope / want to get out of the Reserves. I also recommend doing something different in the Reserves than your civilian career, and if you want to mobilize/ go on orders, GSM is not necessarily a good rating.

    It’s been over 20 years for me but I got out of the Navy after 4 years on an aircraft carrier and I thought I’d join the reserves and just randomly volunteer for Westpacs and stuff when I got bored at college and the recruiter told me that’s impossible so I never joined. I was so into that idea though after doing 2 Westpacs in 4 years on my busy ass carrier. I’d have been bored as heck in the reserves.

    How often would you recommend volunteering to mobilize to get a good retirement? I was thinking about volunteering for a 1year mobilization every 2 or 3 years.

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +2

      @Kevin Davis, ideally, you want to aim for at least 5,000 - 5,800 points for retirement, which is 35%-40% retirement pay.
      So, subtract how many points you have now from 5,000 - 5,800, factor in roughly how many years you have until you retire, calculate how many points annually without a mob (should aim for 130-points minimum), and then decide on what type of orders (mobilization, ADSW, ADT, etc.), duration of the orders, and how often you volunteer 👍
      Example: You currently have 1,460-points (need 3,540 points to your 5,000 goal).
      You plan on serving another 16-years.
      Every year minimum points:
      - 48-drill weekend points
      - 29-AT points (max Annual Training out!)
      - 15-points for a good year (Free points the Navy gives you)
      - Earn another 38-points to max out at 130 (most annual points you can earn for drills). So, you can earn one point per day for doing evals at home, completing tasks at the NOSC without pay, etc.
      ** 130-points annually x 16-years = 2,080-points
      ***You need 3,540 points in 16-years to hit 5,000-points (35% retirement).
      3,540 - 2,080-points for annual max points (130-points per year) = 1,460-points needed.
      ***1,460-points / 365-days (1-year mobilization) = 4
      So, at least 4-years on Active Duty orders. Four 1-year mobilizations, or break it up: two 1-year mobilizations, two sets of ADT orders for 6-months each, and one year ADSW.
      FYI - If you do NAVEDTRA courses = retirement points above the 130.
      Volunteer for military funerals = retirement points above the 130.
      These points go beyond the 130-points per year, which you will need on years you mobilize to ensure you stay within the 5,000-5,800 point goal.
      NOTE: If you mobilize in April, you can drill out for the year, meaning your April - September drills can be used before you leave.
      I hope this all makes sense?

Definitely get with your Career Counselor when you get within 9-months of your EAOS, and also reach out to the CTO (Career Transition Office) / PERS-97.
      The way the Reserves work is you live where you want and will affiliate with the closest NOSC (Navy Operational Support Center). You will have a gaining command at the NOSC and many (not all) Reservist also have a cross-assigned unit elsewhere.
      Example: My gaining command at NOSC Miami (South Florida) was OSU (Operational Support Unit) and I was cross-assigned to units in Washington State, Norfolk VA, San Diego, CA, Ft. Hi! I am looking to join the reserves, and I had a question about the length of contract that we signed up for. Would someone be signing up for eight years and need to serve for that long, or would the length of service be shorter?

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +2

      @12animemanga, all contracts are 8-years regardless if Active Duty or Reserves, for all branches of the military. However, in the Reserves, if you sign as a NAT (New Accession Training), which is someone that is non-prior (never served before), the standard contract to serve is 6-years. The remaining 2-years of the contract can be served in the Reserves as a SELRES (Selected Reserve) where you continue drilling or you can go IRR (Individual Ready Reserve), which is when you no longer drill.
      Example: You join Active Duty for a 5-year contract (Navy ratings (jobs) have different contracts for 3, 4, 5 or 6-years). After the 5-years you can re-enlist for another contract or you can leave Active Duty and join either the Selected Reserves (SELRES), which is when you drill one weekend a month and 2-weeks a year. You would do this for the remaining 3-years of your initial 8-year contract or you go IRR (back to civilian life).
      All initial contracts are 8-years, because members of the Reserves, both SELRES (drilling) and IRR (standby) are the members called during a war instead of a draft.

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  2 роки тому +1

      @onewildandcrazyguy, many CS’s (Culinary Specialist) don’t like their rating because of the long hours and the intensive sea-duty. Active Duty CS is a sea-intensive rating, meaning their first sea duty is 55-months and their second sea duty is 54-months. In the Reserves, a CS won’t actually do their rating on drill weekends (possibly if stationed in Norfolk, San Diego, etc.) On drill weekends, at the Reserve Center, she will normally set-up the drill hall for chow and serve the food that is catered, but Reserve CS’s don’t cook.
      A Reserve CS is not recalled / mobilized anywhere near as often as other ratings. I actually had four Sailors volunteer for a 6-month deployment on a ship, because they were never recalled (after 8-years). All four of them hated it 🤣 They didn’t like the long hours, three of the four were sea sick most of the time 🤣 and two of the four realized they didn’t like being a CS 🤣
      On the other hand, I had three CS Sailors volunteer for a one year mobilization (Afghanistan at the time) with a SEAL detachment and they all LOVED it. Mainly because of the mission, but also more freedom to cook what they wanted and how they wanted.
      As a CS in the Reserves, its more common for a Sailor to volunteer for mobilization then to wait to be voluntold. If your daughter wants to mobilize = have her get cross-assigned to a Seabee unit, SPECWAR unit (SEAL Team 17 or 18), MESF (Maritime Expeditionary Security Forces), etc. 👍

      @Yanilette Polanco, you are probably thinking of the 5-week ODS (Officer Development School) program, which is for Active Duty. If you are a civilian joining the Reserves to become an Officer, you would attend DCO (Direct Commission Officer), which is a 12-day course in Rhode Island. You would attend the 2-week school for either your AT (Annual Training) or often use ADT school funding. The Officers I know usually had to wait one year before applying for the school. It was my job to train them until they attended 👍

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  2 роки тому +2

      @Nicholas Nevares, an E-5 in the Reserves can do 20-years and then transfer to VTU if a waiver is approved.
      E-6 can do 22-years and then transfer to VTU with a waiver.
      E-7 can do 24-years and automatically serve, no waiver needed, in VTU for up to 30-years. They can serve longer than 30-years with an approved waiver.
      Once in VTU, they are no longer eligible to perform AT (Annual Training), but must perform drill weekends for points, no pay.
      They will be provided berthing if they live greater than 50-miles up to 99-miles from the NRA; however, if they live greater than 100-miles, the Sailor must sign a 1070/613 acknowledging they freely accept computing on their own dime.
      Regarding insurance: They are not eligible for Tricare Reserve Select, and can decline the SGLI / FSGLI or else they pay out of pocket for this coverage.
      VTU members can go on ADT or ADSW if funding is available. They can volunteer or be voluntold to mobilize. They will be paid the same as if they were in a paid drilling status. They may also perform funerals for pay.

      Note, the Navy only takes a certain percentage of members with a GED per year and that percentage can change depending on the total number of enlistees needed annually. October 1st is the start of the new fiscal year, so if nothing is available now, check back the beginning of October 👍

    Chief I have a question. So I scored a 28 on my asvab last week. They stop letting people go active with the score of a 26. You will have to score the regular score. But my dream is to be active & my recruiter just called me saying that they’re letting people go reserve now. For somebody who is eager to be active instead of reserve. What’s your best advice?

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +2

      @Abraham X, I recommend studying and then retaking the ASVAB test 👍 Email me if you need ASVAB study material.
      My recommendation is Active Duty!
      Active Duty = Commitment is 365 days a year.
      1) Steady, guaranteed paycheck
      2) 100% free medical/dental; however, depending on location and if you have dependents there can be a small monthly premium and co-pay, but it’s much cheaper than civilian insurance.
      3) Post 9-11 GI Bill (Chapter 33), which is 100% education paid for, book stipend and BAH to pay for living expenses. BAH is E-5 w/ dependent pay (everyone gets E-5 pay regardless of pay-grade), pay is based off of zip code where you attend school. Example: Here in South Florida BAH is $2,352 per month tax free. **Tuition Assistance should be used while Active Duty and Post 9-11 GI Bill saved for after serving.
      4) World travel and life experiences.
      5) 30-days annual paid leave (vacation).
      6) VA Home Loan eligible after 90-consecutive days of service during wartime or served 181 days of service during peacetime.
      7) RETIREMENT is paid after 20-years (or more) of service and immediately upon retiring. Example: Enter boot camp at 18-years old and retire with full retirement pay at age 38.
      8. Tricare medical / dental coverage immediately upon retirement for life.
      9. Invest in TSP (Thrift Savings Plan) for when you leave Active Duty and/or retire.
      Reserves = Commitment is 38-days per year.
      1) Drill 2-days a month (24-days total annually for drill weekends) and 2-weeks a year = (38-days per year, but considered 62-days, because each drill day weekend = 4-days x 12-months = 48-days).
      2) Pay for one drill weekend is 4-days of Active Duty pay. Example: E-2 monthly drill pay is $267 monthly, BUT you still need to deduct taxes, SGLI (life insurance) $25, any TSP deduction, and Tricare insurance. So, you won’t be making much monthly.
      3) Reservist pay for Tricare Reserve Select insurance (medical is currently $44.17 per month for the Sailor (more if you have a family), and Reservist pay a deductible). Tricare Dental is a separate policy, currently $11.65 monthly and Reservist pay a deductible.
      4) Selected Reserve GI Bill (Chapter 1606), which I recommend NEVER using!!!! Service member is currently paid $397 per month if a full-time student. All tuition and books are paid by the service member. **NEVER USE!!
      5) Reservist can qualify for the Post 9-11 GI Bill with Active Duty time. After 90-days on orders a Reservist is eligible for 50% of the Post 9-11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) and percentages increase with more Active Duty time. Once a Reservist has 36-months of Active time they are eligible for 100% of this benefit. **Boot camp and A-School does not count until a member completes 24-months of Active Duty orders.
      6) VA Home Loan eligible after 6-years in the Reserves or serve on Active Duty orders for 90-days or more.
      7) RETIREMENT eligibility is after 20-years in the Reserves, BUT pay is NOT until age 60 and only early if on certain Active Duty orders. Then retirement age is reduced for every 90-days served. **If a Reservist served 89-days there is no reduction in retirement age. Retirement is also based on a point system, so most Reservist do not have much of a retirement.
      I recommend Active Duty and if you don’t like being Active (many often miss family, especially if married), then after one contract leave Active Duty and go Reserves. You will have the Post 9-11 Forever GI Bill and qualify for all other benefits unlike the Reserve route. Let me know if you have any questions 👍

    Do navy reserve get medical discharge after having a fracture in any part of the body.

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  4 роки тому +2

      Taiwo Tunde, it depends on the fracture, location and severity. For instance, I sustained a fibula spiral fracture and I had to go through a medical board to prove I could still serve.
      You would only receive a “medical discharge” if the injury was sustained while on Active Duty orders - often occurs during mobilization. You are held on Active Duty orders until you heal (this was not always the case and has changed over the years). If needed, you would receive a medical discharge and compensation.

      @D Lehm, it is rare (compared to other ratings) that an AD or AE Reservist would be mobilized during their 4 or 6-year contract. Most AD and AE Reservist volunteer for mobilizations.
      A good friend of mine went Reserves 10 years ago and is an AE. She has volunteered 4 times for mobilization orders. Three times to Afghanistan 🇦🇫 flying drones and once to Virginia working with drones. She now has a government contracting job making 6 figures doing the same thing.

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +2

      @Daryl Gaskins Music, in the Reserves, MA, LS, and YN are the top three that always have orders available. HM, PS, AE, AT, IT, and BM have a good selection of orders. All other ratings would be on the “least” side; however, you can always find orders, especially if you have certain NEC’s and/or are willing to fill, as an example, orders for CANREC (CANVASSER RECRUITER). CANREC orders can be anywhere from 12-months this to 3-years with the opportunity to cross-rate to NC 👍

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  Рік тому +1

      @askiamohammed1785 some ratings (jobs) have more orders available than others. Example: BM has generally had more opportunities than PR.
      What orders are available shifts from year to year and a big factor is what’s going on in the world. Example: Currently there are less mobilization orders since we left Afghanistan, but there are increased opportunities to go on orders to a ship, because active duty is short handed at some commands. So, BM would have a better chance of going on orders to a ship than say AT.
      I suggest applying for an operational unit if you want to go on orders and mobilize. Networking is key to finding a lot of opportunities 👍

      @@askiamohammed1785 it will depend on the ship, how long your orders are for and when you report to the ship. Each ship has a training schedule, so it would depend on when you report during the schedule and if the orders are for 3-months or more. • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +4

      @Kristoffer Aguila, no, it is not possible. Every Reservist is allowed 48-drills per year (2-days per month, 2-points per day = 4-drill points per month.
      You would only do two drill weekends a month if you were “making up” a drill due to being on AT (Annual Training) orders and you rescheduled the drill. Plus, with COVID-19, most drill have been virtual since March 2020, which has made it more difficult to reschedule at some NOSC.

      @@LauraZorza Does that also apply to rates like MA? I've read somewhere of reservists having to drill two or even three weekends a month, but their posts on reddit were also from years ago so I'm not sure if that's even the norm/or even allowed as of right now.
      My current plan is to attend college full time and obtain/earn a B.S. in Computer Science over a five year period while in the reserves. My parents are letting me stay here as if I were still in high school so that's a huge relief. @@LauraZorza Also how long would the process take to reschedule things and make sure that everything is all squared away?

    • @LauraZorza
      @LauraZorza  3 роки тому +1

      @4r0sty, it is not rating specific. All Sailors, enlisted and Officers, have the same drill requirements per month and year. If a Reservist drilled two or three weekends a month they:
      1. Rescheduled other drill weekends
      2. On AT or ADT orders
      3. Performing RMP (Readiness Management Periods), which is additional paid drills.
      Flexibility of drills depends on your CoC (Chain of Command) leadership in your unit. I permitted Sailors in my unit to RESKED (reschedule) if needed due to exams and school, but I know of other SEL’s (Senior Enlisted Leaders) that denied the same request.
      In regards to school, go on orders to gain at least 50% of the Post 9-11 GI Bill. Do NOT use the Chapter 1606 Reserve GI Bill!
