- Here we take a look at a 2004 Toyota 4 Runner that on the exterior looks pretty good, but when we get underneath we find some pretty big rust issues. We take a look from front to rear at the frame and show you what you might need to look for.

I can't believe this can be repaired! Any little bit of surface rust I get on my frame I immediately grind off to shiny metal and coat with cosmoline. Maybe I'm just being over the top haha

Amazing how people let the frame rot without attention and prevention. I personally believe that the best rust preventative is a good soaking with 5606 hydraulic fluid which is red in color and is the stickiest stuff imaginable. Once coated, salt water will be repelled and the hydraulic fluid will never crack.
When your 4Runner is new, paint two coats of KBS Rust Shield over all of the welded seams joints and openings then cover all the opening with black Flex Seal tape. Next, spray the in side of the frame with Cavity wax and finally spray AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector over all surfaces- your truck will never rust.
I have an '03 and it has some rust the full length in various places, below pass side front door was worst and that spot is aggravated by the AC drain in engine compartment that drains right on top of frame and then collects under the pass door and drips on ground, relocate that AC drain hose away from the frame.
I try and stay on top of my frame each year with scraping/sanding/painting, rodding it out with a coat hanger in various places and the crossmembers. Had to have the pass side under door plated for $1K.
There are a lot of 4Runners out there with this problem and most owners don't even know it.
They are driving deathtraps and don’t even know it. They even rust out in places that don’t have that much salt. I avoid driving in the salt with my 5th Gen and keep the frame painted.

We have seen a couple issues, a lot of the rust inhibitors can only really deal with a small amount of rust. I have seen a lot of times it put on top of rust scale which then just rusts underneath it and depending on what the coating is can make it worse. If its an area that is pretty well new metal I dont see an issue with it.

This could be welded with a flux core welder right? I'm very mechanically inclined, but noob welder and would like to repair my own. Recommend a welder
I typically recommend at least a 220V welder. It could be welded with flux core. For a welder its not an easy fix, a lot of difficult areas at times. The biggest thing is getting everything as clean as possible. For someone new to welding it would be a pretty big challenge.

How expensive of a job would fixing all the issues in this frame be? Ballpark?

How could they not put in drain holes? Bad design.

I'm not aware of lawsuits but I believe on the pickups Toyota did replace a bunch of frames but I don't believe they did on the 4Runner.
@@nsxspdfreak I just yesterday had someone contact me asking about the trucks, he said they attempted the frame replacement recall but as you mention that window has closed.
Not for the forerunner. Forerunner is the only one that they will not replace the frame.

I looked at a 2003 4Runner that wasn't that bad and I turned it down.
Compared to some of the Jeeps we have done, too bad depends on the frame of reference.
@@TabooCustoms "frame of reference"........LOL! The first two 4Runners I looked at had just way too much rust underneath. The frame and all the components were rusted really bad and I don't mean surface rust.

You did not check the rear upper control arm attachment points. Also, use a hammer, im sure more flakes will come off.
This frame is completely ruin.. if you can stick a screwdriver through a lot of places.. forget it. It's like Iceberg.. only the top you can see.
This is a northern issue.
rust belt states. I would put money that this is a mn vehicle lol. I have seen two like this I turned down. Going to look at a third today. Go gators btw.

This is why I didn't buy a 4runner. A ton of money for a truck that could end up like this pretty easily.
