Thank you for this video! I chose EdD and begin my program next month. I already work in academia and after observing the general workload and research requirements/characteristics of tenure track academics, I chose a different path that better aligned with my overall career goals. Thank you for creating content to represent the EdD side of higher education!
Great, congratulations.💯 But does it also come with an award of being called a dr? does it allow one to stay in the academia, in the universities as long as you want to?
I am so glad it was useful. In the end, each program has a lot in common within the field of education, so it comes down to the specific program you are looking at and what you want to research. Best of luck & please let me know if I can ever be a resource!
Hi Tiffany, Thank You for this wonderful video. I am thinking of getting an EDD and this makes so much sense. I am currently applying at the University of Redlands for a single subject credential only for Spanish. I actually have a Masters in International Relations as well. I notice they have an EDD in Higher Ed then breaking them down into 4 different tracks. I do intent to work in higher ed but as an international center working with international students since I went abroad a couple of times myself. Thanks again. Maria
Thank you I have been struggling with the same issue for a while. feeling like I we be barred from doing research if I chose an Edd which could not bring myself to accept since I want do conduct research. therefore it has been very difficult to find a Phd program and I was overlooking the Edds. You lifted a weight thanks
Cool, I also got my BA in History, a MA in Education (Teaching and Learning) and finally an EdD! I was also a teacher👍. I hope you got your EdD by now, Dr T? You seem to be on a very fast track in completing your dissertation, it took me awhile (and a lot of revision work) to finish my dissertation!
Honestly, unless you really REALLY love people, which is not my case thrn that is a good path. I preffer money freedom animals and travelling without the exhausting hours at a job wich doesn't even pay well for all that studying I did at school.
I would love a full video on the differences between the two or your experience getting the EdD! I started teaching two years ago and I'm also thinking about going into curriculum design since leadership/admin also doesn't interest me at this time.
It seems like so many EdDs are really focused on the leadership part and less on the curriculum/instruction part, which like you, was much more interesting for me! I will absolutely plan to share more about my experience. I can't speak too much to the PhD in education route since I took a different one, but I know in general the PhD is intended to be more focused on conducting research that produces larger theories within their topic/specialization, while EdDs produce more research that deals with specific systems. So for example, my research won't produce a generalizable theory about women in history curriculum, but instead will produce results about how they are represented and based on that, steps we need to start taking to address the problem. Theory is still a part of what I am doing in the sense that I am conducting it through the theoretical lens of Critical Feminist Theory, but I am not seeking to develop my own theory at this time. The tricky thing between the two degrees is that, in reality, you can produce either kind of research in either program, it just depends on what you are studying and the program you are a part of. I think it is also a personal choice you make. For example, some of my peers are already in administration to some degree and are conducting action research to make specific changes within their own schools and districts regarding their curricular or instructional practices. My research is addressing a larger problem in the field of history curriculum, so our journeys look very different, even in the same program. I will try to organize my thoughts a bit and plan a new video in the near future, but I hope for now some of that is helpful/interesting! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it! :)
Do you have an opinion on south college ED.D program? I’m nervous about the stigma against competency based education moreover, the fact that the doctorate is competency based. Looks like you still have to do the typical dissertation/defense just like any other Ed.D. But I’m Worried that employers may question the legitimacy. Also, the school is originally accredited by the same board as all the other big name schools in that area
Nice! I’m so glad you were able to find a good fit. I have a friend who enrolled in their program in late 2020 and seems to be having a positive experience.
I’m so sorry I missed the earlier comment! I do not remember what the wait time was- but I’m SO happy for you that you were accepted!!! I took on a teaching position recently for a local school that needed someone for the remainder of the year and had to put UA-cam back on hold again until I was settled. I’m so glad I got notified for your comment though! 🙌🏻🎉🎉 when do you start?
Hi! I’m currently in the situation of deciding between EdD or PHD with a similar background- bachelors in history and education, masters in history. Not interested in administrative work as much. Can you link to the program you went to?
I came here because I just finished an EdD and now I want a PhD. Thanks for the info. I wish I knew this stuff before I committed to my Ed.D. program. Oh, well, live (with debt) and learn. I’m looking at postdoc fellowships, too. On a side note, I love your accent! Where in Texas is it from ? ⭐️💯 When I see my family every summer in El Paso and San Antonio few people have the Texas drawl..
I never knew about the EdD program myself until it was time for me to apply for it. What difference does it really make between a Phd and an Edd for someone like me going into the academia full time? Thank you for the feedback.
Either one can be used to teach in academia (I teach HS and college courses currently); however, there is some stigma still for some academics that EdDs are not the same quality as PhDs. The reality is, it depends on the program you went through. My EdD program was structured like a traditional PhD, and more so than some peers who received PhDs in education. I think the PhD could help you avoid some of those stigmas, but ultimately, select a program with staff and a program aligned to your career and research goals for the best experience possible. I hope that helps and best of luck to you!
Not in all programs, but you would want to be in or seeking some type of educational/instructional position for this degree to be meaningful. I have encountered people who worked for the government/military, major airlines, and corporate workers in my program, with the common theme that they are in a non traditional instructional position or seeking one. I hope this helps!
You can apply for programs like this internationally, depending on the school or program. I don’t know which programs would be the right fit, but if I were you, I would definitely invest some time into researching deeply the program requirements, design/courses, cost/length, and professors in the college who teach in the programs you find. It can make a huge difference in your experience. Good luck!

Great video. I chose an EdD myself and just finished my dissertation. Yay 👏👏😊. Next is oral defense and capstone and it's a wrap.
Congratulations!!

Thanks so much for this! I have spent the past hour trying to understand the differences between Phd and EdD. Watching your video has really helped!

I want to focus on early childhood education

There are definitely some hurdles here at the end that I hope to make a video about once I am finished. I need to give an update soon 😅

Gotta do what is right for you! 🤗

I looked into a bunch but my final two were West Florida and Liberty University, Liberty won out for me.

Thanks for the video! I got my master’s degree in higher education & am interested in getting my Edd also
If I can ever be of any help with the process or answer questions, please let me know!
Thank you Tiffany! I had an interview with 1/2 of the universities I applied to. Do you recall how long it took for you to hear back from schools ?
I got accepted 😊

Western North Carolina, but I get Texas from people a lot! Good luck on your doctorate, round 2!

Can you please make a video about private practice with the EdD degree?
Great video. Is it compulsory to have education background to get an edD?

Hi, my name is Pooja. I am an International student, so can I apply for an Ed.D. program in the US ? or is this program just for the US residents?
