    In fact, about the thing with the grape juice, in Spirit of Justice (minor spoiler, don't worry) Apollo mentions that the grape juice is good to relax, and Athena ask him if he's really talking about "grape juice" or the "fermented variation of it" and Apollo replies her that he's actually talking about the normal grape juice...

    Watching the Ace Attorney series desperately clinging to the idea that the series takes place in America is one of my favorite parts of the localization. You can tell that the Japanese devs are just messing with them at this point, but the localization teams just keep trying to make it work. It's hilarious.

      Yeah, I mean the games continue to acknowledge they aren't in the U.S. (the second case of "Justice For All", the last case of "Apollo Justice", the entire concept behind the name Ace Attorney). And yet even in the most recent trailer they keep trying to claim they're taking place in the states.

      +Dollarluigi There have been games that have done that in the past. Take Skies of Arcadia for example. In the game they have a drink that is called "Loqua" in the English version. One character refers to it as "just juice". However, in the Japanese version, the characters actually drink rum. And I'm sure that there are plenty of other examples out there.
      Most people just assumed that this was another one of "those" cases. It's understandable. But yeah, like Clo Clo said, it's mostly just the bottle that it comes in. Doesn't exactly look like a Welch's container.

      Dollarluigi #LocaliseDGS I dunno. It's probably some weird pride in the idea of having "adult" stuff in their game and any possibility of something being censored or changed to being more tame irks them. Because the game about murder loses all maturity when the characters decide they wanna drink grape juice once in a while...

    The grape juice thing is actually really funny to me. That's great, and a fantastic in joke that just serves to confuse people.
    And as a Spanish person who's only played the English versions, the name "Juan Corrida" has actually made me giggle more than once, usually upon forgetting about it before returning to Farewell, My Turnabout. I agree with changing it for Spain, not because of some kind of moral issue but simply because it's distracting and lessens the impact of the case a bit. It's hard to feel sorry for the dude when you're sitting there giggling about ejaculate like a 14 year old. Or maybe I should just stop acting like a 14 year old... but nah.

    • @lizpadovani3387
      @lizpadovani3387 6 років тому +3

      I’m Puerto Rican. So, when I watched the video and heard that the name “Corrida” had been censored in Spanish, I didn’t really know why. I paused the video and tried to think of what else “Corrida” could possibly mean... I eventually gave up on it, and carried on watching, and saw that it was Spanish slang. I was thinking “WHAT COUNTRY USES THE WORD LIKE THAT?!?!?!”.
      After I finished the video and came to the comment section, I remember seeing what I would consider to be a dirty joke in the Spanish version of Sonic Forces... (To Puerto Rican’s, anyway).
      While I played through the entire game in English (I prefer watching/reading most forms of media in English), I did replay the first level of the game in Japanese and Spanish to listen to the character voices in those languages.
      And... Uh... Well... You see...
      In the English version of the first level of the game, there’s a bit where Sonic sees a giant worm thing coming out of the sand, and exclaims “Man, look at the size of that thing!”. If you’re dirty-minded, you can already see something wrong with this, but the Spanish version goes even further...
      In the Spanish version, the line is changed to “¡Caray! ¡Qué bicho más grande!”.
      Perfectly innocent in most Spanish-speaking countries, right? But in Puerto Rico, this would essentially translate to “What a huge d***!”, since “bicho” is Puerto Rican slang for “d***”.
      I was convinced the people in charge of the translation of the game did it on purpose.

    Hum... It does make sense that Jean Amstrong is italian in France localisation, no ? x)
    Jean Amstrong is a character who was designed to be a stereotypical french cook, it was part of the joke of this character. In France it doesn't work because even if the trad team gave him a french accent... it would just have been a french cook, so a lot of the comedic self of this character would be lost.
    So they decided to change his nationality to allow the character to have an accent even in the french version.
    And they choose Italy because in France italian cuisine is a known thing, it's very simple to make a stereotypical italian accent... and maybe we see italian as... a bit more effeminate than we pictured german for example :D
    It's not censorship, it's just common sense to make the character work here ;)

    The change for Jean probably wasn't because the French didn't like it. Remember in the French version of the game EVERYONE IS SPEAKING FRENCH. They likely changed it to Italian so that the intent of his gimmick still gets across. It's like how in Japan Franziska goes overseas to study in America, but in the American version (which takes place in the US) she goes overseas to study in Germany.

    • @aneonfoxtribute
      @aneonfoxtribute 8 років тому +1

      I don't think the Franziska comparison works. Japan could have done German as well and made it work just as good as America. If Franziska was changed to America in Germany, THEN your comparison would work.

    • @qwiikry699
      @qwiikry699 3 роки тому +1

      @@aneonfoxtribute When the 2nd and 3rd games were being made, Shu Takumi and his team weren't expecting localization for their Gameboy Advance Trilogy, because the first game didn't sell well enough to be localized, so they snuck in multiple Japanese references. As so, Franziska von Karma (or Mei Karuma in Japanese) at the time was a Japanese prosecutor who trained in America. However, when they announced that they would localize the 3 games on the DS, they couldn't make Franziska von Karma, an American in the English release of Ace Attorney, go abroad to America to study law and come back to America to fight Phoenix Wright in America. The localization had to change the ethnicity of the Von Karmas and where Franziska would study to keep the "study abroad" trope they were going for.

  • @gamefan56
    @gamefan56 8 років тому +5

    Dr. Grey (The Victim) from Case 2 in Justice For All also received a change when localised outside of Japan:
    One of his animations is him pushing his glasses back with his pointy finger, but in the origianal japanese version he would use his middle finger so it looked like he flipped you off.

    • @aneonfoxtribute
      @aneonfoxtribute 8 років тому +1

      No, that was in the original American version as well. They did remove it for the HD re-release, however.

  • @Rickbane01
    @Rickbane01 8 років тому +18

    Phoenix Wright is one of my favorite game series because the stories are so anime and it works best if you figure it out just as Phoenix does.
    It good to hear that only some inside hidden penis jokes and a rare bit of dialog from a perverted character was changed because of the localization team shitting their pants. I think games should take the approach of exploitation films of the 70's and film a scene before the logos appear of a staff member sitting down and explaining to the player that something that may offend you and if any children present should leave or cover their eyes throughout the game.

  • @fisyr
    @fisyr 8 років тому +30

    I don't think that changing the name of the restaurant in the French version was really a censorship. I see it more as a smart choice of translation, because the whole purpose of this Tres Bien cafe was to mock restaurants of foreign nation you know little about trough stereotypes. In France then the whole joke would stop working as stereotypes about your own nation are much less funny.

  • @vcom741
    @vcom741 8 років тому +19

    The scene change with the insane Doctor is not the worst. Bad, but not the worst as long as they don't go anywhere beyond scenes like that. Personally though, I think ESRB or other rating boards would've ignored this as "under the radar". Nothing to hate the series or localisers over.

  • @shocknawe
    @shocknawe 6 років тому +6

    0:59 - It probably had nothing to do with them not liking it. In order for foreigners in plots to make sense (aka, to feel foreign), whenever they are canonically French, the French make them Italian.
    This goes to show sometimes how this channel blurs the line between facts and conjecture.

    I wouldn't say changing Jean armstrong nationality in the french version was censorship.
    Some of his humour is, that Jeans throws in french lines and that wouldn't have worked in the french version for obvious reasons. Turnign him into an italian seems more like a try of saving the joke, rather than censorship.
    And since we're at name changes: I'm surprised Klavier Gavin is not listed.
    Klavier was renamed in the german version. There he is called Kantilen Gavin.
    The main reason is, that Klavier is german for Piano. And Capcom wanted to avoid naming a character after an object.
    My memory is fuzzy, but I beleive there was another one. Unless I confuse it with the crossover.

As for the localization the only thing indeed needed to be censored out is the lolicon doctor's dialogue which is pretty much coming off in the west as a creep while in the Japan it's just a joke of being a pervert hence why Phoenix says "As if I'd ever bring her to you" in the rough translations.

    Kinda makes sense that Jean Armstrong and his restaurant were changed to be italian. Having a french restaurant in France would make it have no real identity. Also, the next best nation in terms of cuisine is Italy which can be argued to have a similar aesthetic.

    Honestly the first games localization was not even worth mentioning as it had very little actual japanese-esque cultrual bits that needed to explicitly be changed, beyond mayas outfit very clearly being quite japanese (i dunno if its a kimono or something else i know there are different ones but i dont know the difference) but that was easily justified.
    Then the developement team must have decided to mess with the english localization team after that

    • @Shadowtopia69
      @Shadowtopia69 7 років тому +2

      ChikaCherry / Artist of Trash We make games like Gta, yeah. And Japan, along with other countries, censor them. Sometimes to the point where the censorship doesn't even make sense. Yet, no one is making a huge deal about that. I don't know why people think North America, and Europe, are the only countries that censor things they think may be inappropriate to their target audience. I think the (barely noticeable)changes in the Phoenix Wright games are reasonable.

      I'm french and although i have never played the french version of the games it just makes sense that they changed Armstrong's nationality. He wasn't made italian because he was gay, but because in the french translation all the characters speak french and thus are presumably french to an audience that has never played the original version of the game. But then lampshading the fact that Armstrong is french doesn't make any sense, since everyone else also is, so he'd lose his accent, which is a big part of his characterization... French characters in original media are often made either british, spanish, italian or german in the french translations since they're our neighbours and we like to poke fun at them :) besides that way Armstrong can remain the funny foreigner he was in the original version ! so yeah the change wasn't made bc he's gay (which isn't even a problem here) but to keep the joke intact ! anyway i hope you understand my point :)
