Editor's Pick | Fatāwā No: 1118 Question: What is the meaning of His (ta‘ala) statement: «...so do not be soft in speech [to men]...»? Answer: His (subhanahu wa ta‘ala) statement : «...so do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is a disease...» The verse is from Surat Al-Ahzab. It was revealed in the context of the addressing of Allah (‘azza wa jalla) to the wives of the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and the women of the Muslims after them, that they should not be gentle in their speech, and neither be soft, in which the woman shows her femininity and submissiveness, lest the hearts of men would incline towards her, and the one who had in his heart the disease of lust and immorality would become desirous. Ibn al-Mundhir narrated in his tafsir on the authority of Ibn Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) in His (Allah ta‘ala) statement: «O wives of the Prophet! You are not like any other women, If you really fear Allah, then do not be soft in speech...» He [Ibn Abbas] said: “do not be soft in speech nor submissive.” Al-Tabari said in explaining His statement (ta‘ala) : «...lest he in whose heart is a disease...» he says: “the one who in his heart is weakness would become desirous, and it is due to the weakness of his faith in his heart, either by him being a hypocrite who doubts in Islam, and due to that of his affair he makes little of the limits of Allah, or by being laxed in approaching immorality.” End quote, (rahimahullah). And Al-Qurtubi said: “That is, do not be soft in speech, Allah has commanded them that their speech should be concise, and their statements should be clear and it should not be in a manner that shows an indication in the heart, by what appears to him from softness, just as it was in the case of the Arab women, from talking to the men in a melodious and soft voice, such as the words of the suspicious women and the prostitutes, so He (Allah ta‘ala) prohibited them from that «...lest he in whose heart is disease...»: ‘disease,’ meaning he aspires to immorality, which is debauchery and flirtation «...but speak with appropriate speech» and the ‘appropriate speech’ is the proper way which neither the Shari‘ah nor the intellect denies. And it is mandub for the woman, i.e. recommended for her, that when she addresses the strangers, and likewise the persons who are not allowed for her to marry like son in laws and brother in laws, to be rough in speech, without raising her voice. The woman is commanded to shorten her speech.” End quote (rahimahullah). And Allah (ta‘ala) Knows Best. --------- “For 1,400+ years, muslim women have been wearing the Hijāb after the verses from Sūrat al-Ahzāb were revealed. There’s no need for women in this day and age to publicly demonstrate to the world how to wear a Hijāb, displaying themselves without hayā’. And Allāh knows best.”
