I always thought of this song to be the antithesis of “Mr. Blue sky” considering how that is literally the most cheerful song on the planet, and this song sounds extremely depressing. Both songs have a theming of a hot summer’s day, and are extremely recognizable from just the first few notes. Both are excellent songs in their own way.

One thing I always think about when I listen to this song is the interview with Chris saying the composition was meant to be kind of a depressing overtone, but he found amusement on how the masses considered Black Hole Sun a happy tune. When I first heard this song, I knew it was a staple track to drown in your sorrows. I remember putting my CD player in a zip lock bag and putting it in my pocket. I would play this track and laid on the ground when it was raining hoping that I'd either drown or get over my sorrow. I was heavily depressed back then, but now, I couldn't be happier. I should find the time to do that again, only this time, I'll be smiling while the rain falls down on me...
Wether it's happy or sad depends on where you sit. It is sad for snakes but happy for honest men. When he ends by hanging his head, it's not drowning in fear but rather praying till fear itself drowns. (I'm well aware that he had a completely different interpretation when writing it. He never mentioned the book of Malachi or refiners fire and launderer's soap even though it lines up so well)
Me too. I knew it was about depression. It used to bring me further down so I avoided it. Now that I'm the best I've ever been (5 years sober!) ...and thinking of Chris RIP, I'm relistening after 25 years 😁👍🤘
Somehow this just reminds me of when I was about 6 sitting around a fire at my grandparent's house hanging out with my uncle, my dad, and my grandpa. They're all drinking beer while I drink nothing and just watch the fire. I can smell the budlight, hear the talk of random things only guys born in the late 1980s would talk about. I'm just glad this scenario still plays out to this day. I love them all so much and I would never take them for granted. I may get mad at my dad, not visit my uncle much since he lives up in Tennesse, not visit my grandparent's back in my hometown of Arkansas because I'm too busy, but I'll always have my dad. And I'll never not love him for putting up with me for so long and still wanting to hang out with me, play games with me, talk with me, he's an amazing role model. My grandfather is someone who I'll never not think about once a day and wonder what he's up to, same for my uncle. I know my cousin's a hand-full but he's got it.

I recently moved to Boston and blasted this song as I set up my new apartment. Dunno why but it felt oddly liberating, like I was leaving my old life behind and washing away the past to reveal a new but uncertain future.
Not to open up any battle for "the most suffering captured in a song" because I think this is pointless, but listen to "Dark was the night, cold was the ground" by Blind Willie Johnson, for this also gets quite far in that regard.
Have dealt with MDD & PTSD for most of my life. Once upon a time, I had a little pit bull, Alley, whom I often called Black Hole Sun, after this song. Won't you come? She always did. And does today, in dreams. Dog is God spelled backwards. Don't kill yourselves, people. RIP, Chris. God knows I've fought it for years. Stick around & see what's next. Maybe we can make a difference while we're here. See you on the other side.

This reminds me of my worst bout of depression. Just that feeling of dazed emptiness is all over this song. It’s like watching the world end and embracing it. Kinda makes me scared and sad when listening to it, the beginning almost brings me to tears. great song tho
same here, I listened to this during some of the worst times in my life when I trapped in a hellhole with two parents who approached raising their children like psychotic dictators
This is such a dad song yk? My dad used to play this sometimes. And now I won’t ever get to listen to his playlist anymore, like how I won’t ever see his face in this world.
one of the greatest guitar solos from the 90s tbh, and matt cameron's drumming in 9/8 time is so fricking good i always air drum to it when i hear this song no matter where i am
This might just be me but I feel like this song doesn’t only convey suffering, it conveys hope as well. The alternating major and minor keys remind me of someone having a crisis and trying to make sense of it by seeing both the positive and negative side of life, or whatever got them in the crisis in the first place. In the end, though, neither of them overpower the other. It’s a long search between light and darkness: wether you emerge victorious or not depends on your view of life.
Ive always been mainly 60's 70's prog, pop music since a 90's kid. But because of my die hard love of so many different genres of music tastes i have always found that on many occasions there were albums that had some other mystical magic. I recently bought this album again, haven't heard any of it since the mid 90's. Its totally insane just how good it is on the whole. Took me a little while to get used to the very heavy vibe but wow am i glad i re discovered it. There was some good music floating around the planet during the 1990's, i just didn't give enough of it a chance. (Very strong album)

Soundgarden was always one of those bands my dad would play while we were in the car together. Reminds me of simpler times. Times before schools became COD maps. Before Covid was even an idea. Back when folks thought we'd all die at the strike of midnight because of an old calender on some stone.
The moment I heard this song it became one of my favorites, which sucked because I lost the song for a really long time because I never knew who it was by, I just knew that my mom had played it for me a few times. I remember around 2 or 3 years ago randomly remembering a couple lyrics from the song and looking it up on UA-cam and I fell in love with the song a second time. It's never been my favorite, but its always been in my top 5 since I was about 6 or 7. This song is pretty much tied with another song (Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day) for having the most history with me lol, I know its not that much but it gives me a huge nostalgia boost whenever I hear this song and even without the nostalgia its such a great song, 10/10
The name of this album (superunknown) really shows that this song is unknown in its meaning. It doesn’t have a meaning, that’s what Chris himself said before. And it kind of reflects on our understanding of this album, this album is really quite literally superunknown, we don’t know why some of the songs exist, or why it was made the way it was, but I’m glad it was made the way it was.
I'm not one of those people who say they don't make rock music anymore...but I will say that we're in a malaise musically. This song is absolutely lightyears ahead of any contemporary rock music.
My dad, before he got debilitating chronic pain and paralysis, would play this on his speakers so loud the house shook. Guess I took it for granted.
All you need sometimes is courage and some great music. Stay hopeful and strong my man 🙏💪
I have no idea if he's still around tho I think he'd really love it if you played it for him just like the old days :)

This song can make you cry yet so happy at the same time
man, what a voice!
This song will go down as one of the best ever created🙏🏼amazing vocals, soul, and message ❤🙌
theres no message its just insanity 😭😭😭
what message lmao, it just rocks
I recently moved to Boston and blasted this song as I set up my new apartment. Dunno why but it felt oddly liberating, like I was leaving my old life behind and washing away the past to reveal a new but uncertain future.
How's it going?
You doing good?

this has to be the best song in history, period.
i don't think theres a song that conveys so much suffering as this one
Not to open up any battle for "the most suffering captured in a song" because I think this is pointless, but listen to "Dark was the night, cold was the ground" by Blind Willie Johnson, for this also gets quite far in that regard.
having a bad day rn so im putting this on repeat
Samee
paint it black
did it get better?
Thank you Chris. You are missed.
my dad plays this every once in a while, we even reference it sometimes.
goddamn, did I get lucky with parents who have good music taste.

One of my favorite songs of all time
This is the song that made me realize I heard classic rock a lot before and loved it-
Have dealt with MDD & PTSD for most of my life.
Glad to know about your dog but I feel like the god thing is abit far. However still adorable ☺️
Best song after COVID.
Signed up for my ssa retirement the very day this year. Waiting for my 1st check right now!❤
I still jam this song even on my days off of work it’s smooth and I like a lot of it
Good man 😂
Great song for the eclipse.
I remember after the oj bronco chase I was coming home with a broken toe . I was out of work for three months. I would watch MTV In my rocking chair. RIP Chris Cornell 🔥
I have listened to around 5000+ songs till now and this is the best of all.
Ive always been mainly 60's 70's prog, pop music since a 90's kid.
But because of my die hard love of so many different genres of music tastes
i have always found that on many occasions there were albums that had some
other mystical magic.
(Very strong album)
bro some kid sang this at our school talent show and dude the crowd was absolutely vibing. im talking about cheering, arms in the air, it was just such a vibe
I was about 19 years old when this song was released. It brings back dear memories of drinking and smoking with friends listening this song. I wonder where they are now?
I first heard this song in 1995. It gave me comfort during a terrible time in my life. It’s my all time favorite song.
These guys are going to be huge one day
I was just singing this while getting my kids ready for bed... and my 7-year-old daughter joined in 😮😮😮... ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Long live the 90's, last decade of awesome music
Loved this stuff and listened to it to death as a teen..coming back to it..its still a gem
This song is legendary is many ways!!! Amazing 👍
One of my personal favorites.
A number of years ago I was in a pub and this came on the juke box which triggered a mass sing along!
this song always reminded me of a beautiful afternoon, walking in my thirteen emo punk age with my friends, and the afternoon sun cover my face
When my dad first played this song I loved it and i would keep playing it

In my eyes
Indisposed
In disguise
As no one knows
Hides the face
Lies the snake
And the sun
In my disgrace
Boiling heat
Summer stench
'Neath the black
The sky looks dead
Call my name
Through the cream
And I'll hear you
Scream again
[Chorus:]
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain?
Black hole sun
Won't you come?
Won't you come?
Stuttering
Cold and damp
Steal the warm wind
Tired friend
Times are gone
For honest men
And sometimes
Far too long
For snakes
In my shoes
A walking sleep
And my youth
I pray to keep
Heaven send
Hell away
No one sings
Like you anymore
[Chorus 2x]
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Hang my head
Drown my fear
'Til you all just disappear
[Chorus 2x]
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
(Black hole sun,
Black hole sun)
Won't you come?
Won't you come?

"We're all going to make it" is emotional nonsense with no basis that everyone says and repeats because it's a nice idea. The satanic religion is a religion of feel good-ism and millions of people subscribe to it thinking it's some kind of neutral and morally good position to take.
The nostalgia ❤
RIP Chris Cornell. The day he tried to live was with a Black Hole Sun and a Rusty Cage. 😢😭😓😟
But unfortunately he fell on black days.

my interpretation of this song is that it's about a disillusioned man who's fed up with modernity and prays for the apocalypse to finally come and wipe everything out.

First listened to this from For All Mankind, that show is one awesome vision.
Black hole sun and waiting for the sun from the doors both have that eerie feel of the coming doom of humanity, like the lyrics are written in stone.

Soundgarden was always one of those bands my dad would play while we were in the car together. Reminds me of simpler times. Times before schools became COD maps. Before Covid was even an idea. Back when folks thought we'd all die at the strike of midnight because of an old calender on some stone.

@@barkley8285 Fuck that, I ain't touchin grass till I have a piece.
I still tear up from this and yet I still love it!! 😭😭✨️🩵
We love you Chris you and this song. I hope your flying high in heaven
