Why can’t he just book leave like any normal job? Or does it work differently in the US? I know there is no mandated leave, it is 28 days in the UK, but it seems odd that a Doctor wouldn’t have vacation time.
Residents and interns have very little vacation time and if it any, they can't take days in a row off. They would have to find coverage for their shifts. My BIL is a doctor and the only time he got more than 3 days in a row off was during rotation change

A few episodes later, in 12x16, she has the surgery, and in 12x19, she no longer uses the crutch. In real life, Laura Innes started having back problems from imitating a limp/lifting her hip, so the writers wrote this story.
