- The reckless spending of money and the waste and corruption in the City of Johannesburg is not going to stop because ActionSA is getting into bed with the African National Congress (ANC). That is the warning from Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor and former Citizen Editor Martin Williams. “There's absolutely no way ActionSA can put a spoke in that wheel,” he says. In fact, says Williams, any party that gets into an alliance with the “divided and corrupt” ANC in the province will end up in an “unstable relationship because you don't know who to trust within the ANC”. He adds that the ANC doesn't even need ActionSA “to do anything” if the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is on board. “So they could be playing off each other forever, at least until 2026 when the next election happens”. He also dissects the different factions in the ANC and describes how the connection of the “Alex Mafia” weaves through it all. While Williams believes that a working relationship between a “reasonable” ANC and the DA is the only way to start turning the City around, “we cannot get into bed with the ANC as currently constituted”. Instead, the DA will work toward gaining a commanding position in the 2026 municipal elections.

I don't think DA wants to go into government as yet. It's too close to the LGE in 2026 and there's NO WAY they can fix the City in such a short time. They must just sit this one out and let the residents of Joburg suffer for 2 more years.

Watching this with a sense of pity from Cape Town. No city is perfect, but things are good here.
The housing crisis will have Cape Town looking like LA in a few years.

@@fullmetaltheorist it’s rising because everyone is migrating there and poor blacks are building shacks on land that is earmarked for housing development. They are not receiving their fair share from national treasury since the money they are getting is not enough to the needs of more South Africans coming to the province. The only to bring down the housing backlog, significantly, is to grow the economy and create jobs. When people have jobs, they can buy house, build a house for themselves or buy a flat.

ActionSA does not have any leverage like DA has on ANC nationally. Whether ActionSA supports them or not won’t make a difference and certainly won’t make a difference by taking the legislative arm of Joburg. To a make difference and govern better than DA they need to be in the executive. FYI, no party in SA can govern better or match DA’s excellent record in government. That’s a fact

They did it in the belief there would be a decent reaction; they too were fooled by the ANC. The ANC has to go for this country to be saved, they cannot be trusted. People like Mashaba are playing right into the ANC's hands, they keep attacking the DA for their failings, and... go and work with the ANC, such hypocracy is amazing. ASA has proven to be a destabilising influence wherever they go because Mashaba swings like a pendulum. He just wants some power so will sell the country for his power.

The da councilor doesn't realize that the mindset is to not give da enough power to make huge demands.. ANC still wins by keeping majority executives with a 6% difference, it's a power move but a big lesson for all parties in future.
One thing that Gauteng residents have learnt is that they need to give DA as many votes to overtake ANC and become the largest party. When DA is the largest party, they have the responsibility in forming a coalition government and making huge demands that will rescue the province. Those huge demands are evidenced based solutions that have been tested where they govern and yielded great results. They are desperately needed in Gauteng to revive the economic powerhouse of Africa and become the engine room of job creation.

ActionSA is now working with the ANC! I find it amazing how Mashaba can justify not working with the DA and then working with the ANC. Its so sad, the country needs the coalition of decent parties to stand together, sure there will be hiccoughs but if they are (or were) mature this would have been forseen, I am so dissapointed in all of the coalition parties whio have jumped ship to get their pieces of silver, the FF+ and ActionSA. We have little chance of saving SA now as the ANC, who are the issue have started sucking in the less honest parties like the FF+ and ActionSA.

No, I think they know they cannot do anything o save JHB now, and lets be honest; JHB is collapsing right now, it is a mess. The sad thing is that the people who should work with the DA are now working with the ANC, we have lost almost everyhing we wanted to gain with the coalition. The GNU was necessary to prevent total disaster with the EFF or MK joing with the ANC, no one is happy but that is reality, in the cities and provinces there is less reason to work with the ANC. I just pray that the DA can win JHB and save it from collapse.

The DA refused to rescue Joburg. They could have and declined to do so because they didn't feel they had enough time to turn things around and it would hurt their 'brand'. Maybe they should have thought of their 'brand' before making the disasterous ex mayor of Tshwane their candidate?

DA refused because they weren’t confident that they will make a difference with an unstable minority government. There’s too many parties with more than 5 received less than 1% and they hold the balance of power. Any of those parties can decide any day to bring down the government. DA can’t work in such a situation where they have guns over their head by small parties and threatening them if they don’t meet their silly demands then they will be removed from government.
