What is better then a huge cup win mid-week? Getting that win while resting lot's of our first team starters and not picking up injuries. Perfect night.
@@Caninemuffin766 having been a liverpool fan for over 30 yrs I've endure some rough times. And the past 10 yrs of watching united suffer has been worth the wait. Lol
Encouraging performances from Endo and Jones who will be critical for rotation after the international break as well as Quansah and Gomez. This is because from Oct 20 - Nov 9 we have Chelsea (PL) , RB Leipzig (CL), Arsenal (PL), Brighton (EFL), Brighton (PL), Bayer Leverkusen (CL), Aston Villa (PL). Endo, Jota, Quansah, Gomez will need to start some of these games, Morton may also get matches too, Harvey we don't know given his injury, as a result Jota played as a CAM and Mac Allister came which would be unsustainable with the fixture schedule after international break, that's why I mention Morton. We know Bradley, Tsimikas, Chiesa, Gakpo can all step up, for Endo, Jones, Gomez, Quansah the game tonight was a big help.
For me, Kelleher was one of Liverpool's best players - he dealt with everything (apart from the goal where he had no chance) and some of his saves and the command of his area when others were panicking was superb. Gakpo and Jota were our best players for an hour and eventually Gakpo fully deserved MoM (he started very slowly and looked sluggish and timid in the first 20-30 mins, but he got better and better as the game went on). Tsimikas looked a liability again and lost the ball in too many dangerous positions for us to persist with this bloke. Bradley was good and got better as the game went on. Agree with Laurence on Gomez and Quansah, looked OK, but lacking command of the situation. Endo was OK but a bit out of touch - not surprising given his lack of game time. Jota was pretty good at 10 (as I thought he would be). He offers more creativity and goals than Szobo, but the surprise was how much he got stuck into the hard work when we are defending, he cannot match Szobo in terms of power or speed in this area, but he was so aggressive and clever in his pressing and closing down. Chiesa did well given it's his first start for months, but needs more game time. Nunez worked very hard but was pretty anonymous until the last 10-15 mins when he came alive. Of the subs, Mac was just superb - Jones def should have scored from his brilliant through ball and he could have had two goals from great shots, plus once he was in our midfield we suddenly had composure and control. Mo looked pretty good too after he came on, and his finishing for that goal was just 'only Mo can do this' territory - he made something that was pretty challenging, just look simple.
I completely understand where Kelleher's mind is where he doesn't necessarily want to be back up keeper. Had it not been for Alisson's form over the last few seasons, Kelleher would 100% be our #1 We should definitely enjoy having him in our ranks while we have him
I have to say, Nunez last night was a menace in defense. His off the ball work rate was unreal, I think there was an occasion when he stopped a counter with back tracking and putting the ball out of play down the left (our left, West Ham's right) That little flick to Tsimikas, when Kosti, Darwin and Cody formed a little triangle 😮😮
With Jota at 10 and Gakpo/Chiesa keen to impress that's not a surprise. He did his job well in the end, linking up, making runs to open up space and defending when needed.
Was a very satisfying win. These types of victories might go unrecognized in the grand scheme of the season but they are the ones that build to successful cup runs. Gakpo fantastic - unbelievable to have him and Diaz in such great form fighting over that spot. On Tsimikas have to agree, he’s just not at the level of quality needed (and we could improve upon him) it’s nothing against him at all, he’s been a legend for us. What I will say is there’s no questioning his commitment to the badge, and that’s why he’s still here. On that West Ham chance for Kilman, he literally dove down headfirst to block it - and those are the types of characters we want/need. Great video as always Loz
Only point I disagreed with you here on is that West Ham are on the up. They looked to have a good summer but it’s not working so far.. they looked absolutely horrendous against Chelsea and tonight
the boys looked good after that unfortunate OG. I thought Qunasah was left in a terrible spot and he wore it on his face but he recovered well and finishing out the match was critical for him. Darwin laying off the ball for Cody and tracking back to defend stuck out to me. but the lads recovered well and Alvarez can fuck off into the Sun for cleating Salah like that.
Just finished the vid, great as always. Agree with you on most points, other than West Ham being a team on the up. Their hubris and arrogance to replace Moyes has landed them with a stroppy toddler of a manager who is (for some reason unbeknownst to me) talked about like he’s on the level of Emery. Yes he did well at Sevilla, but he’s absolutely crumbling so far at West Ham. The manager lost his head BEFORE the players did tonight, and that is really shameful. Though then again, we’ve been rather spoilt when it comes to managers in recent years, so maybe that’s just my privilege talking haha. Look forward to your pre-Wolves vid!
The back line and midfield at times were giving the ball away and susceptible to press. But tactically, Slot adapted by bringing in the forward line to defend. This was evident at least 3 times when Gakpo cleared and Salah came back to snatch the possession off of Westham.
9:20 This was the issue I had with Jota against United and Forest, where Jota barely got into any decent scoring/chance creating position and was constantly overlooked during the build up. I think Slot is trying to get the strikers to play a different role compared to a traditional no. 9 or the role Bobby played for us. Although today Nunez's build up play was good but there seems to be a little to no involvement for a no. 9 currently in the Slot system until now, even if Jota starts as the main striker.
Resting both CDs was a real head scratcher. If Hammers got 1 of the penalties, the game might have turned out differentl. But I understand Slot has to rotate. We definitely need a ccouple more experienced back ups, IMHO.
I much preferred Curtis V West Ham to many of his previous performances, in which he would more often than not hold onto the ball one touch too many. He's always played like he's got Lucho or Gakpo's ability to carry the ball through opposition players, but he rarely had the strength to swat them aside. It looks like he's been working on his weaker aspects under Slot, who really seems to know his shit regarding who to play, and how they should play to get the best from their capabilities. I have been one of the Curtis naysayers, but if he keeps on his trajectory (which was always in his wheelhouse), he could be a player we'll rave about in years down the road.
Jones and Endo were shit side by side in the first half. They got better when Jones went forward infont of Endo. Jones has natural instinct as an attacking midfielder. WHEN playing deep it is not natural and he dilly dalies tryiny to make decissions ; because it isnt his natural position.Jones is best around the opposition box .
I think Bradley is not used to slot ball. For me, he was worse than tsimikas on the defensive side. That moment when we were 3 x1 with one player, and he tried to pass through one player, loses the ball and west ham almost score, we had one extra player, don't need to drible in the defense, kill with passes.
I don't think it will be a one. It felt we have played more two in the middle up to now in most of the games. Tactical boards showed one slightly deeper one just in front then the CAM/no.10
As ever, enjoy hearing Laurence's views and insights. But, can't quite agree on Jones's performance. I thought he was very quiet and negative for large parts of the game - when we had the ball and he should have been looking for space in the pockets, he was content to simply stand in front of the W Ham midfielders and offer a wall pass - which takes us nowhere and threatens nothing. His shooting was also pretty woeful - I think he had at least 4 shots, and two of them he should have scored from, but none of his efforts were even decent. He did some good things, and his contribution to the 2nd goal was great, and he is obviously in need of minutes to sharpen up, but there is still a lot of ground he needs to make up for me. Elliott is well ahead of him.
@@jimflan1712 but Jones just came back from injury, and he’s always a slow starter especially after injuries. I think he’ll be good in the games to come. Showed good signs today.
@@AnirudhChhabra7 yeah, I think that is fair comment. I just did not agree with the view that he had played well - i think he did at times, but for most of the game was anonymous.
@@jimflan1712I think he just needs a more creative player (like Macca or Elliot) paired with him. His ball retention is actually very valuable. Jones also did exactly what you’re asking for in the second goal, breaking the lines and making the run.
@@BaldManagersUnite yes he did. But he was robbed of the ball several times because he always wants so much time to even decide what he wants to do with the ball, let alone execute it. This is the single biggest thing that the Liverpool fans criticise Jones for. I really just don’t think he is ever going to step up in the way that Trent, Kelleher, Quansah, Bradley and Elliott have. I just don’t think he will ever be at the level to be a regular Liverpool first-teamer, and so should be sold to provide a pathway for other young players who have greater potential like Nyoni.
i spent the hole match tracking Gomez and all his movements but i think we are living him behind. his presence on my side put an impact in that back line
