  • Epic Clear Water Redfish Sight Catch At the End! Weekend Warrior Saltwater Fishing!
    PROUDEST MOMENT(S):
    My buddy, Dennis landing a nice bull red.
    Spotting birds working the mouth of the bayou and getting on nice speckled trout earlier.
    Venturing into a skinny back lake and sight casting redfish.
    Learning how to more effectively fish my 21' boat in skinny water.
    Not having to get towed and fixing my boat on the water.
    Backtracking to find my jacket with my Jeep keys washed up on the grass-line and not
    Getting my ol' Notre Dame buddy on some fish
    REPORT SUMMARY: Was heading to another spot, but noticed birds working the entrance to Big Pasture Bayou. We started our approach and immediately got on the fish. Caught some sand trout but then made our way into some larger slot trout. Thought we were going to finish off our limits of trout, but Dennis got hooked up with a nice 35" bull red. He landed that big girl like a pro! The bite faded away and we went up towards Triple Cut. Bite was dead there and we were not protected by the wind. We took off through the back lake to make our way towards Sunnoil Canal. Hit one of the cuts that was pouring out water. Looked very "fishy" so we stuck it out for a while. Dennis caught a nice 18.5" trout. We lost some other nice fish and then decided to troll up the canal. Had some good bites and landed some under-slot trout and a black drum. Tide was still up, so we made our way into a little back lake at the end of the canal. Water was only 10"-14" deep, but the Majek RFL handled it like a champ. Water clarity was pristine. A lot of finger mullet and fingerlings were getting chased in that back lake. Started seeing redfish on the prowl. It was my first time venturing into such shallow water with such a big boat, so I was just trying to figure it out as we went along. Sight casted a nice 24" red that I caught on camera. It was cool to see it cruising away from my bait and then notice it traveling parallel to it, then make it's way toward my lure, and then hammer down on it. The fight was epic in that skinny water and will be a cherished memory that I hold close when fishing is tough.
    Then there was the aftermath. We made our way out of that back lake after we scared away all the remaining redfish, and then the motor wouldn't crank up. Thought we were going to have to use the trolling motor to make our way down the canal and call for a favor to get a tow, but managed to swap out the starting motor battery with one of the trolling motor battery and she cranked up immediately. Got so excited that I forgot about my jacket that had my Jeep keys in the front pocket. Made our way all the way back to the boat ramp and couldn't find my keys and couldn't find my jacket. My wife who had the spare, was still 3 hours away from making it to the house in Bolivar. Decided to retrace our route in a futile attempt to find my jacket. Made our way back to Sunnoil and Dennis spotted it washed up on the shoreline.
    Awesome day overall, and a little luck definitely helps!
