I don’t really get people’s problem with this? Yes we think a rel 6 or 8 pack would have done the same if not better. But also we don’t know? People are just upset at the price when it’s part of a lineup that has $300k speakers in it. I can’t say if it’s worth it or not, and neither can you. Just let people enjoy there stuff if they can afford it. Great video
Great video, some reviewers would stubbornly argue that a pair of 6.5 inch woofers in a bookshelf speaker is all you need! Nothing outside of Excellent, well set up subwoofers will get what you are describing. It becomes obvious who has, and who hasn't experienced Excellent subwoofers when I here people say "you don't need a subwoofer"!
I agree 100%. I used to think all I needed were good towers or excellent bookshelves because I had a pos JBL subwoofer from 2005. Then I bought my first real subwoofer, an SVS 1000 Pro. I realized I was wrong, I was so impressed by the higher quality bass I started doing research and ended up going for a REL1205. For my it was yet another leap forward and I realized this is just the beginning, so then I got the REL 1508 and that's when I knew, I truly had no god damn clue what I was talking about. Movies, music and even gaming just isn't the same without that 15" subwoofer that somehow plays perfectly even at low volumes, that blends in so perfectly with my speakers I can't even tell where it is. My journey taught me well, I must never not have a good subwoofer.
I really love hearing you talk about music because you are so enthusiastic. And I like the longer videos, as music and stereo reproduction is my passion. Keep up the great work !!! My system plays at least flat or more from 11 Hz to 40,000 Hz. The extended range is one of the best things that takes a system closer to recreating the "being there experience" instead of listening to a playback system. Congratulations!!!
Each acoustic wave, if met by a reflected wave, will either be strengthened or extinguished, depending on the phase in which they meet, and this depends on its length, i.e. for e.g. 50 Hz it will be 344/50 = 6.8 m (the entire period ). So they will interact freely with each other. I have a 42 cm (18 inch) bass speaker and it creates a wave that goes towards you and penetrates you precisely because the speaker is directed towards me. If you have an amplifier that has several hundred watts and it properly controls the speakers, the direction is physically felt by your body. It's not about whether you determine by hearing how it reaches you, but about the physical interference of the room. This is simply the physics of wave interference
Can’t tell you how much I’d like to be able to recreate the sense and feeing of deep organ notes. St. Marks cathedral in Seattle as an example. Not blessed financially, but wow! Sure can appreciate it.
It'll never be the same as the real thing unfortunately. The logistics of recording a full organ in a huge cathedral faithfully precludes this, not to mention the listening room ad equipment shortfalls. However, I get such a thrill of hearing a good semblance of the original that it thrills me to the bone!
I recently had the chance to listen to the ESD Acoustics SuperDragon system, which included an impressive and high-quality subwoofer setup, made up of six ESD-subwoofers per channel. This was my first experience with such powerful and controlled bass playback, and I felt truly engaged with the music for the first time. The "air" you mentioned was there, matching your experience with the subsonics. I was blown away by the impact of the subwoofers on the already high-end hi-fi setup.
Thanks Mark for these 2 videos. Love your enthusiasm for music; valuing it over whether it's recorded digitally or in the analogue domain. Also you obviously have a great classical collection; how do you catalog it so that you can easily store and retrieve a particular version of the same piece? By artist; by composer, by piece, by etc...Might I suggest that you and/or Michael Johnson create a video talking about your cataloging technique.
I have 2 REL S/510 for my much more humble sound system (Hegel 590, Dynaudio Confidence 30, Aqua LaScala DAC, Innuos Zenith Mk III) and once they are placed and tuned correctly, they sound just wonderful. The whole room is pressurized and it feels like the entire frequency range is enhanced. They can also be stacked 3 on each side (a little too extreme for me, but so are the Wilson's Subsonics). At times, I prefer a more subdued bass and I just bring the subwoofers' volume down a notch but when I listen to "bass heavy" music, they are fast, tight and kick ass. Audioexcellence sell JL Audio which have the advantage of easily adding the crossover CR-1.
I would love to hear my beloved Cowboy Junkies Trinity Sessions CD on this system. Also, the CJ 2-CD set called "200 more miles" was also recorded live at different bar/club venues and I'd wager that some of the drums on these cuts would be stellar on a system like this. Too bad I don't have the space or income to have a system like this but it still would be cool to sit down for a couple of hours and experience it
Glad to have these videos back! One of my first subs was Paradigm PS-1000 v2. It made one sound, and ONLY one sound: Bpppppppp! But it did it LOUD! Good for movies, a disaster for music 🤣
So they are not self amplified? Do you move them with the same amp used for the main speakers? How does the crossover works? Does it also have a high pass filter for the main speakers?
@@adrianlow2114 hmm, you should highpass them. You will most likely get better results. Inside the highpass crossover is just a simple capacitor or two and it will not degrade the sound. There are already a bunch of capacitors in the crossover… one or two more will not matter.
Nice video. A true state of the art system needs subs… no exception. Seems like an amazing system and I would love to hear it one day. I did not catch it but where did you end up highpassing? I normally do 60hz regardless of how large the speaker is (small speakers might need higher). For the common people, I would guess JBL SSW-1 (duel 15s) gets in the same performance range for $8000 each.
Switching the watches up I see, Adrian! 😂 again, kind of hard to make out to me, I want to say it’s Jaeger, based on what I made out on the deployant buckle shape. 😆 let’s hope I am right 🤞 Back up guess: Cartier
2x 3-pack REL Reference arrays would have taken you farther with change to buy a good new car too.especially if you consider the cost of the additional amps. But of course you are not a REL dealer..
Besides your unsubstantiated claim....a car? Where you getting your REL deals? A No.31 is $9500CAD and the No.32 is $13500CAD x6 of them would be right in line with what the Subsonic costs.
@@AmbientClassicalPiano subsonics cost 82K USD without the crossover (5.5K USD) so 87.5K USD in total = 118K CAD. WITHOUT the amps needed to drive them since they are passive.. The 6x No 32 will be 81K CAD and I'm pretty sure that room could do well with 'just' the 6x31s (57K CAD). So I’m probably right and you are way off with your calculations. Ask our host how much one would pay for proper amps to drive the Wilsons. Plus the claim is not unsubstantiated. Have you ever listened to such a REL array? They can fill a ballroom from top to bottom with good musical bass. Is the overpriced Wilson thingy individually tuneable per driver?
In a room, if the speakers are not placed at the right angle, a standing wave will be created, which will mute some frequencies. It is best to direct the sound wave at a specific angle to extend its meeting with the reflected wave. You can use something that will direct it sideways in its path
Not sure where you got that idea from? Assuming you are talking about low frequencies, these are omnidirectional. The wave lengths are so long that pointing the low frequency driver in different directions does very little because the waves wrap around the transducer that creates them.
@MikeFromAudioExcellence if it's 1/2" drywall the self damping properties will prevent excessive ringing. If it's drywall on typical wood studs with any insulation behind it, it will quite literally work as a bass trap. Not as efficient as a purpose made diaphragmatic bass trap but still a bass trap. You will typically get as much as 30% bass absorption from typical interior drywall room barriers. It won't lead to standing waves. It will reduce the effect of any standing wave. That's room acoustics 101. And the only energy it will "lose" is reflected energy. And that reflected energy will muddy and distort the bass. If the bass is inadequate in a room with well controlled bass reflections the problem is the speakers/subwoofer not the room.
@MikeFromAudioExcellence all materials resonate. With room acoustics the issue is absorption, reflection and self damping properties of the room boundaries. As I have already stated, drywall is highly self damping and even more so if there is fiberglass insulation behind it. It's not going to resonate much. OTOH the reflections in the bass region will resonate. So thin drywall wall, particularly attached to wood studs with insulation are great for reducing bass reverb and have no drawbacks in the bass region. If you are not getting enough bass the problem is either the speaker/subwoofer or you are not getting enough bass absorption from the thin walls. The real issue with thin walls is the transference of outside noise into the listening room. Not loss of bass.
This video is comical. So $80,000 for the subwoofers and it sounds fantastic? It freaking better! Did you really think it wasn't going to have that much of an impact?
That side angle and lens combo is giving off weird druggie vibes, but that's none of my business. Would be better if Adrian was smoking a cigarette and leaning in to tell a secret or joke when using that side close shot.
So, your sub sonics cost 82000. Lord knows how much your main speakers cost, then there’s the amplification, cables and the rest of the electronics. Probably costing more than my house. Yet, you still contemplate the need for parametric equalisation!!!
