Good points JC.
People like new stuff. Doesn't matter if it's actually better.
To me it hints of karma for greedily overpricing
i like how trek does it (domane/emonda), the cables aren't really integrated, but run along the bottom of the handle bars and enter behind the headset.
Plus the Madone having a two piece bar so that the cables are easier to integrate.
@@jarrodfife242 Sl7 is also 2 piece and routes under the steam
We should all start listening to Durianrider a bit more and maybe trusting his wisdom.
he bought 2 sl7s lol
Hahahahaha
@@bw5539 They offered me a bike last year but I politely refused. I dont want to be a big brand shill so when the audience wanted me to get some SL7 then I organized that vs was given them for free.
Imagine some of the haters now on SL7 who ignored my advice. Ouch. :(
These integrated cockpit/stem setups are in the if ain’t broke don’t fix it category and a nightmare to work on as well.
@@The86rick agreed, obviously a touch more time consuming. But by no means a nightmare.
@@The86rick Nah they are definitely a nightmare to work on. Each brand has their own unique way of doing it so as a mechanic you have to spend a lot of time figuring out each one and making sure it is correct so you don't kill somebody. They even change it year to year within the same model so each one is like the first time. Way too many compromises for a purely cosmetic thing. Just tuck the cables on the underside of the bars and move on.
@@The86rick
Rick, suggest you watch Luescher Technik’s latest video….I’m by no means alone on this one. I suspect we’ll see a move away from integrated cockpits in the near future.
The only reason that manufacturers ever went to internal cables was COSMETICS. The appearance of internal cables is striking. This is a sign that cycling has jumped the shark. Despite offering NO advantages in terms of performance and creating some significant issues, internal cables very quickly became the norm. Why would consumers prioritize appearance over function? Because they are not buying bikes for function, they are buying them for status. Bikes have become a Veblem good, no different than luxury watches or handbags. The consumer buys a Veblem good to demonstrate their social status, owning a Sworks bike for the same reasons they own a Rolex or a Kelly Bag. That reason is to let the world know they are capable of purchasing such costly items, the goods become more sought after as the price rises as the consumers spends more money not to receive greater value but rather to simply prove they can spend more money. In other words, because they are insecure and narcissistic.
Engineering department is the accounting department
They had a problem. On a limited number of bikes. Luckily, no one was hurt. There is a recall and a free fix. I have no problem buying from Specialized again. YMMV.
Marketing is Marketing 👍
Great video Jesse explaining that these brands that are constantly increasing prices but aren't increasing there reliability. I wonder just how many bike the pros have gone through and how long Specialize had some sort of idea this could happen.
The important thing to remember is that the gains they claim are in steady state testing with biased favourable conditions, in the real world, the bike is only as good as the rider. The bike industry needs to be better regulated A) to keep people safe B) to stop marketing making claims that are utter nonsense outside of their very specific testing conditions.
One bike can definitely be better than another.
Their claims are not only made under biased test conditions, but they are at their core just “unproven claims”!
Their claims have not been backed or verified by any independent test sources. This is because companies that make moronic performance gain claims like Specialized, Zipp, Absolute Black, Ceramic Speed, etc…. have consistently refused to release their so called test data for independent peer review and testing.
In no field of academia or science would one be permitted to continually make baseless claims over and over without putting their test data up for peer review and independent verification. This type of nonsense only occurs in what is known as the modern day marketing and advertising worlds.
And of course this is how a company like Specialized can manufacture a cheap sub $500 cost CF bike frameset in China, and then sell it for thousands of $
to many willing gullible muppets. Wash, rinse, repeat. 😆
i ask again. Where is number how many bars broke on SL7 or how many of them have had this issue? Everyone is talking like most of the bike are now dead and breaking. i got mine, rode like 14k KM this year and have no scratch on the fork or so.
wow. They will get it right next time. The next S works sl 8 is going to be $17,000 in the U.S.
Here's why I bought an sl7: it physically existed. It was tough finding bikes in 2020. Honestly wasn't my first choice, but it was what was available.
The real scandal is not that the headset is prone to failure but the fact that the company was sitting on this fact for many months knowing that customers were at potentially lethal risk. Instead of recalling they waited until their designers and manufacturers came out with a replacement part.
It's like a Boeing Max that continues flying for a year until Boeing has a software patch ready for updates. The rest is history.
I don’t understand how the price of the SL7 is on par with Specialized top of the range E MTB which has a bloody motor, front and rear suspension, dropper post and carbon frame with additional linkages and massive wheels and tyres.
It's all about the buyer. People put up with it and just barrow the money. It's why houses and cars are crazy expensive now.
@@aaron___6014 agreed
like and subbed, great content. glad I found it, your a person with an actual opinion and not just trying to shill for the industry like alot of the other channels.
SL7 headset has similar if not the same design like the venge, but why isn't there any issue with the venge?
Integrated cockpits look great, but I've never believed the slight aero gain is worth the risk with however they have designed the clamp.
A 3 watt gain at the cost of not being able to ride your bike for three months? I don't think that's worth the $20k price tag.
I never read manufacture product details... You can't argue one way or the other about their claims so why bother read it. A lot of magazine/website/youtuber's reviews are tied to certain brands so again I don't trust what they say... I'm sure there are many people who buy new products because they have to have the latest thing regardless of whether it's any better than the older model so brands will always bring out newer, and in their words better products. More and more bike nowadays have product recalls which make you think how good is it in the first place? I would rather buy a used item which has been tried and tested and let someone else take the financial hit for me. Keep up the video's, they are always good and thought provoking...
Yep. This is serious issue because it's not about a bad batch of part.
This is a bad engineering with out any proper test.
Specialized and Canyon collab!!!
I have a 2019 venge pro. The recall makes me super nervous as the venge has the same internal cable routine design as the SL7. so why only SL7 is recalled?
Great question I've seen a few people asking this, if I was you I'd be taking it into a spesh dealer just to be looked at and checked over for peace of mind.
I would get it checked out, pretty unbelievable that Specialized sat on this for so long.
If the steerer plug on the SL7 is too short and requires extension, surely it’s too short for all road bikes worldwide?
@@mrichards55 steerer plug only protects the steerer from the stem so it's pointless making it longer when the issue is in respect to protecting the steerer from the part used to interface the bearing to the steerer with integrated cables.
I agree with your recommendations, aside from BMC. They look and ride all fine but it's definitely up there with Cervelo, Canyon, Specialized, 3T, etc.
Merida and Giant are alright.
Edit: not price-wise but the BS they sell and lack of proper engineering
Did u know that merida and giant manufacture their own bike in their own factory ?.
That is why brand with their own factory tend to be better in term of reliability. They also own their testing rig etc. Does not mean other brand that outsource their manufacturing is bad but it also come to engineering design.
Let see channel like PT, hambini and luechter technique. They uncover these marketing bollock of aero dynamic fiasco. Also if you see alot of test of aero dynamic the rider is 80 percent of drag.
But i do not blame the consumer but these company can not even be bothered making a design that work properly and reliable.
It just baffled me.
Marketing is having a great copywriter!!
$11K for a dangerous bike. I have had several recalled bikes. Ho ray for CPSC. Stay safe and listen to your machines.
I like to ride with a few gadgets, and the lack of a clean car-like PAN to integrate them is an issue. It's1980 in that area.
This was just another bad attempt. "There is no such thing as a pretty wire."
I always knew my 8.4 kg titanium bike would be faster than a SL 7 if I waited long enough
😉😉😏😏😐
In every carbon bike video, there's a dork like you, talking about his steel/ aluminum or titanium bike... Guess what: No one gives a shit
@@AandA697 The fact you replied so aggressively is fact that you obviously do give a s**t.
😂😂. 🤔🤔. 🥱🥱
Bro speak truth
We want to believe :-( Just like the optimised glucose-fructose blend at pure sucrose levels... there must be a trick, there must be something that will let me climb like Jay Vine, descend like Tom Pidcock. Now who was that trouble-making NZ’er who won ths commonwealth games gold with rim btakes?
Just googled the price for a Yamaha R6 supersport bike, the same price as this road bicycle... somehow that just doesn't add up.
and carbon bikes aren't new tech anymore. They got it right 8 years ago.
When i started building my own rides i found real quick cash aint king in this sport. I have tested 2000$ wheelsets that are slower then a 500 set etc.i have tested frames same way an have found same deal cash an name brand is not necessary king either... I have yet to find a frameset that can beat my old tcr that costed me less then 500 us
Some people think this is not a big deal. I’d say Oh yeah…this is a big deal for sure!
Given normal design just works. This is just ace. Unneeded and F d up
Agreed. Its time for the bike industry to take a good hard look at itself. Claim what you like when it comes to style. But there is something sacred about engineering - and I'm speaking as an engineer myself. Its time to drop the unverifiable performance claims and pseudo scientific bullshit. Honestly, you don't see this in other engineering-led industries like, say, automotive. Lies and extravagant unrealistic claims about performance are avoided. In fact, most parameters are determined according to established testing procedures (eg crash test, fuel consumption etc). High-end (well, supposedly high-end) bikes and equipment are starting to get a bad reputation, and it is the manufacturers that are to blame. Best thing the major manufacturers can do now - before its too late - is get together and put in place some kind of universal industry standards.
I think you make great points, however, my concern is that there is no realistic "too late" scenario. Maybe these recalls hurt the big brands a little bit, but I can't pictured the market without the same big players at the top. Specialized should be raked over the coals for something like this, but I don't think it will seriously affect them.
I wish this was possible, but when you look at the unverifiable publications on tissue DNA that appeared in Nature a few years back, or major dietary studies that conclude that a varied dier will result in gaing 30g less per year, or the dicumentation of >80% false positive rates in RNA biomarkers, or...
Marketing is all.
Still would rather ride the SL7, than an exposed cable system like the TCR or a rim brake.
I’m not afraid to admit that these gains hardly matter to me. But an integrated system looks waaayyyy cooler. I don’t ride to make up for a lack of ego by needing to prove my strava times.
I just want to ride a bike that I think is cool and can afford, and I’ll have fun my way.
That said. This recall is making me consider if I should get a dogma F as well, and maybe sell off the sl7, rather than wait to see if this will lead to issues down the road.
You know what's way cooler than the SL7 tucked in mangina cables? Front teeth.
You know also what’s cooler than just front teeth? Having an SL7 and your front teeth. Something which I experience every time I ride, but that which you sadly will never know.
@@87togabito Ecks dee $10k carbon frame from china
@@eto2352 Yes, but fortunately no riders have suffered any injuries - so you can have your bike and eat well regardless.
Not like im gonna be buying one but nonetheless terrifying. And their handling of it even worse.
Nice!
Froome where u at?
Big yikes, wonder what due diligence we (as consumers) can do with all of these proprietary bar/stem combos that are coming out due to integrated cockpits.
It's hard, you'd like to think the people reviewing the bikes would take them apart and look at potential issues like this, but it may be hard to spot (Spesh obviously missed it). Guys like Durianrider are pointing things out, but we can't expect every cyclist to follow random people on the internet to get this info.
Best bet is just not to buy new model bikes, buy ones that have been in the market for at least 2 years so issues are more likely to have shown up. Same goes for all bike parts though, powermeters, headunits, etc
@@nerocoaching There's just such a lack of consequence in cycling imo. Then again, it's the same with cars - the faster, newer cars are generally less reliable.
Sucks because I doubt anyone with the dosh to drop 20k on a new bike wants exposed cables hahaha.
The Tarmac SL7 is the fastest bike if you want to go to the hospital.
They should drop the price ...so i can get one 😋
I've ridden EVERY high end tarmac since 2003. My Sworks SL7 is HANDS DOWN THE WORST.
@@DurianriderCyclingTips I can't afford a $20K Sworks. The pleb SL7 Comp is what my budget allows. I just want that sweet sweet etap ..and clean cable routing.
Best to steer clear of a company that can't design a safe bike.
Marketing without the data to back it up becomes marketing BS. Guess there was no time to generate data on the reliability of the design 😩
That is the only difference to a non-specialized bike…
Big recall of their flagship product... yikes
👍
not to mention it’s literally 20 fucking thousand dollars...
kudos to the owners of +10k junk
It just goes to show that you (don't!) get what you pay for!
Not even remotely close with specialized , except the allez sprint.....
TLDR/TLDW just buy a Giant TCR
Yes yes
Everything in life is about marketing. That's why you're wearing an overpriced T-shirt. Who is to say anything that is claimed is true? From corporations, government, medical, media, textbooks, etc. We as consumers don't truly know unless we're immersed in it. And even then, it's all based on what was said before. We value all claims based on our knowledge and desires and if it fits, we buy into it. That's how we navigate through things. Nothing new.
