I love that lipsync because she manages to effortlessly combine campy comedy moves with sickening, challenging real dancing as well. The fake jump and putting on the mask after the first big dance section are both hilarious, and add on to the absolute domination of her actual dancing, jumps, and splits. I wish more queens walked the line between "normal" lipsyncing and campy comedy lipsyncing.

Chi Chi‘s wardrobe malfunction is until this day, one of the greatest things that ever happened on Drag Race, I get goosebumps every single time and it just hits harder with her passing. We love and miss you Chi Chi ❤️❤️❤️
And I keep remembering too how the dress was from her mother, which makes the malfunction so much more impactful. Gosh, I remember my breath being taken away once it happened.
It foreshadowed ChiChi crumbling to illness.

I think my favorite thing about Monet's fake jump is that later on in the lipsync she *does* do a jump split. Like she's saying, "just to be clear I can do a split and slay you all"
Carmen vs Yara is not only the first ever double-shantay, it's also the first time a non-English song was the lip-sync song

@@aswinsai9967 the only completely non-English song, yes. The only other majority non-English song would be Detox vs. Jinkx with Malambo No.1. All other lip-sync songs on the US seasons (afaik) are fully English
Latrice's "Natural Woman" is absolutely one of the most beautiful, perfect lip sync performances i've ever seen. She is a born performer and she really understands what a good lip sync is. Same with DiDa's "This Will Be" lip sync. Just so, so good.
Alexis Matteo! She held your attention in her lip sync. She is an overlooked drag queen. Why is that?
My favorite thing about Latrice is her adaptability in lipsyncing. She completely understands the need to match her performance to the song. She can werk the house down with Sissy That Walk and she can "park and bark" with Natural Woman and both are excellent lipsyncs. It also helps her case that Kenya perfectly displayed how being not adaptable will doom you

That almost never works, the 1st eliminated from Mexico did that thing TWICE lmao that's the reason she's a Porkchop.
The only time it worked was with Dakota on UKS4 bc she was going to win that lipsync regardless if Baby quit or not.

Chi Chi Devayne is probably one of the most versatile lip sync performers ever. If you watch her shows, you see not only powerful stunts, but obscenely good dramatization and emotion. A true treasure of drag. RIP Chi Chi
One that hasn't proven to be influential YET but I'm really hoping it will be was the Jinkx vs. Monet Designing Women spoken word lip sync in All Stars 7. God that was so iconic and we need more.

Eevie Oddly's Back face reveal is a perfect example of a not too subtle reveal with a beautiful lip-sync. Perfectly executed and hauntingly gorgeous.
I feel like so far the only Queen that also made a reveal her own after Sasha during finale was Yvie with the mirror head-piece and a face on the back. We haven't seen that before and it's just the same caliber of creativity as Sasha

there’s a reason why those two queens became winners too! the sheer originality behind it, they did those reveals in a way that’s very true to who they are as artists/drag queens and that’s what got them the crown. they didnt do a reveal just to do one, they were incredibly intentional about it
I think Dakota on UK 4 did a great wink to the camera type beat when she did the fake out Ginny walk out.

I also think the Morgan/sonique is pretty important because it was the moment it was made clear that a tight lypsinc is more important than fancy tricks- up until that point the girls who did tricks usually stayed

If you wanted, for seasons 10-15 or even All Stars, speculate what lip syncs you think could be influential down the line. Two that stick out to me involve recovering from "accidents" like Heidi putting her wig back on and Kylie doing a somersault after slipping on her outfit.
Alsoz altough not really influential since it's recent, I'm sure anetra's jump in boss bitch against marcia x3 will surely go down as one of the most iconic recent lipsyncs in herstory
@@davidkonevky7372I think it will be seen as influential in the future because after Anetra jumping over Marcia³, I reckon stunt queen will start to get more and more daring with the tricks they perform to save themselves from elimination.
Season 10 felt pretty…meh as far as truly iconic lip syncs go (save the already mentioned Pound the Alarm as good and Nasty as bad).
Season 11: I’d argue that Brooke vs Yvie was the first “go all out with stunts for the whole song” lip sync that worked. Nina vs Silky for being, well…meh. *insert A’keria quote about Nina dancing like one of those xmas doll things* Yvie’s headpiece in the final lipsync, the effect it had definitely helped her take the win, it was SO cool. The first “using your outfit to your advantage” in that way was probably Coco vs Alyssa though.
Season 12: Crystal’s bird thing…as a “what not to do”. Heidi using her balloon hair, which the judges called her out on, as a prop that helped her win - maybe not truly iconic, but I love seeing them take a heavily critiqued part of their outfit and using it to their advantage.
Season 13: Not really a great lip sync season…
Season 14: probably Camden’s fall-reveal.
AS3-8: Having a tough time thinking here. Yvie’s reveals against India. Kylie somersaulting out of her fall. Laganja’s entire lipsync from her reveal as the assassin to the end of the performance. AS5 choosing really bad song-assassin matchups (particularly Fancy). Boom Clap for being the worst Charli XCX song they could’ve picked. Jessica Wild whipping out her coconuts (and apparently doing some stuff we didn’t get to see because tv ratings). Bringing Pangina back to beat Jimbo, just because it brought that whole mess full circle in my opinion. Silky vs Silky.
Some of these aren’t truly iconic, but they are the lipsyncs I think of for each season. I need to watch 15 again to get a better idea there.

Sasha Colby made herstory with not having to lip sync in S15 and then simultaneously having the all-time best finale lip sync performance to an original track with “Goddess”. That number cannot be topped, I’m certain they will change the finale format for 16 to accommodate that fact
im a recent fan of drag race and you would not beleive the SOUND that left my mouth when i watched the "and im telling you" lip sync. i will never forget that moment where chichi's beads break on stage. the sound, the visual, it gave the illusion of her standing in the rain singing her heart out. we miss you girl, rest in peace

Great analysis! This might be a hot take but I also think Yvie v Brooke 1 has had both good and bad influence.
Some Queens might have taken from that lipsync that the more stunts the better, failing to realise that Yvie and Brooke were also so much more than just their stunts. They had emotion, playfulness, taunting one another. It was a masterpiece
The best part of that lipsync is how they keep subtly checking each other’s stunts and being like, oh yeah? Brooke checking her nails lmao
Not to mention Brooke's classical training vs. Yvie's natural and rare flexibility!!
This was really fun! I always loved Brooke’s reveal parody in the S11 finale
I am LIVING for Michelle’s reaction to Roxxxy’s wig reveal. And while it’s not my personal favorite, I think Sasha Velour’s lip sync was probably the most influential of the whole franchise. Monet’s fake out jump is a favorite as is Ginger Minj’s Where the Hell My Phone. She is hysterical!
What makes me laugh about that is Michelle criticised Roxxxy for their hair being too flat 😂
Thank you so much for calling out Alaska's lip syncs in AS2. Its gross to me how she was given wins in lip syncs in which she straight up sexually harassed the opposing queen on stage, I don't care if she performed better (she didn't against Jaremi and the second time against Katya), if drag is not a fucking contact sport, she should have lost the moment she tried to touch them.
Peppermint vs Trinity Taylor during the live finale. When Peppermint does the outfit reveal, snatches her own wig and then does the clap in the song made me run away from my laptop when I first saw it. Peppermint SNATCHED my soul. She tells a whole ass story and picked the perfect moment to do the reveal.

i think trinity K bonet’s lipsyncs deserve more recognition from season 6. Especially the one vs milk
another one I want to add is Utica vs Tina Burner. Splits and stunts are often though of the most basic way to win a lip sync (Laganja), except for when a queen is genuinely dancing to the song (Morgan vs Kylie), which can be defeated by someone who plays into comedy (Darienne, Monet), which can then be defeated by creating a stark contrast between the performers, where one of the queens captures the underlying essence of a song that also works well with your outfit (Utica, Latrice). Its kind of like Rock Paper Scissors
Alexis Matteo. That queen can emote the hell out of a song and had RuPaul fixated on her performance in her first season (3) to ‘Even Angels’ vs Shangela. Manila, a self-anointed booger, complimented Alexis in her lip sync performance as beautiful & timeless. That is old school skill & Alexis, like Latrice, does it so good as she is a true performer.
Even Angels is sooo good! It has to be one of my favorites! Alexis's emotion almost makes me cry, and yet no one talks about it or any of her performances tbh
This was super interesting! You mentioned Dida Ritz's performance against The Princess, which is one of my all time fave performances, but you didn't bring up an aspect that I've always felt was the cherry on top of the whole thing, which was the fact that Natalie Cole was the guest judge for that performance. If you ever decide to do something like this again, I'd love it if you discussed the lipsyncs that were done with the og performer watching. I think it always creates a very charged energy that can either create something beautiful or something that blows up spectacularly.
*(Edit: Also, unrelated to this, but in regards to the comment at **6:22** about wanting more drunk lipsyncs, Maddy Morphosis revealed at a Roscoe's viewing party that she was drunk for her lipsync against June Jambalya.)*
i think tatianna vs alyssa and brooke vs yvie kinda re-wrote the fan perception on double shantys having to be good performance first and foremost cause honestly every time there is a double save, it’s just because of storyline rather than performance. an example of this is dela vs darienne the first time around and also kandy vs symone where there was pretty clearly a winner for the lipsync.
People still can't decide a winner between Kandy and Symone ☠️

I think the season 2 Morgan vs Sonique is also really important for drag race because, at the time at least, it set the precedent for what qualities the judges prioritize in the judging process. As I remember, in addition to performances that matched the mood of the song well, lipsyncs that were tight/precise were consistently picked over stunt heavy performances. Morgan vs Sonique was the first time I remember that happening, but Coco vs Alyssa also comes to mind. Like, I'm pretty sure one of the reasons Coco won was that bit where she just pointed at her mouth to show how incredibly precise her lipsync was.
Adding to your comment about Monet, she is my FAVOURITE lip sync performer from Drag Race. She can just do pretty much any song that production throws at her and look stunning doing it. Her performance to Supernova in AS7 is honestly so damn sexy and just so good. She's just such a strong and versatile performer, I can't think of anyone who can just do any genre like her. Her weakest is probably Into You from AS4 but I feel like she kind of threw.that lip sync, either so she didn't have to eliminate anyone or because production told her to let Valentina have the spotlight for story purposes.

Beverly vs Queen Kong on down under is SEVERELY underrated they battled, queen refused to give up ground, Beverly pushed queen to her limit forcing her to play her hand. It was excellent

Another category of lipsyncs (that was briefly mentioned here) that I love are the queens interacting with each other. Like Adore vs TKB, Raja vs Carmen, etc. but it only really works when it’s consensual and they have chemistry on stage
The double stay when brok lynn heights and ivy oddly, and the spoken lyl sync in all stars 7 between jinkx and monét!!! Those I think are two that deserved to be on the list

new sub here! so glad you mentioned tatianna’s and alyssa’s shut up and drive lipsync! though it’s definitely not the “best” it is my favorite of all time. i was a part of the covid drag race baby boom, and i started with all stars (kinda silly in retrospect, but whatever). i was of course moved by raven and jujubee’s AS1 lipsync but not much on my first watch (since i hadn’t watched their original season and i didn’t 100% ‘get’ their connection). the shut up and drive lipsync was the first time the show truly put stars in my eyes. i couldn’t believe what i was watching, i was so gagged. i’ll love it forever!
I just wanna add Jiggly and her jump splits in season four were ICONIC!!!
The "Redemption" Lip Synch is something specific to All Stars. Valentina winning an Ariana Grande Lip Synch while wearing her Selena fantasy. Mo Heart winning a lip synch where her wig comes off, only to reveal she has another wig underneath. Kylie winning a lip synch in AS6 to a song using a similar tactic to what got sent her home on season 2, but this time it working successfully. Jimbo finally winning a main stage lip synch on AS8.
dida ritz’ lip sync against the princess is probably my favorite lip sync on the show. I cannot ever stop thinking about it and it’s own of those performances that get me to dance with them too like bro omg
loved this so much! you are my favorite drag race youtuber by FAR! things i missed that i would love to see you talking about in the future: katya's decision to change from the latex dress in all stars 2 (that made it possible for everyone to change for all stars); prosthetics used as reveals (the problematic -- shangela in freaky money, trinity in you spin me round -- and the successful (jessica wild in coconuts); the best and the worst times the outfits were the stars of a lipsync -- coco's sleeves, mayhem miller's iconic throwing of feathers around, sasha's mask in it's not right but it's okay, lala ri's bag outfit destroyed, eureka vs aquaria with 100 reveals etc etc etc

Honorable mention to Alyssa Edwards using the back frame of the stage in lipsyncs, though.
a lot of people didnt know that during the finale, if stronger was given to shea and sasha, the later have a scissor on her legs that she will use to cut off her wig bit by bit until she is bald.
I believe Kylie had the first outfit reveal in a LIPSYNCH on the show. Because I think Bebe technically did the first outfit reveal on the runway of all time on the stage with episode 3.
I would also say ongina vs Bebe because that’s the lip sync that made Rupaul want to implement a double shantay as a concept
Back when season 7 aired a lot of people were torn about the lipsync on the conjoined queens episode. One side of the argument was that if you mess up together, you lipsync together and at the time we'd not had an all stars season where the lipsyncing queens changed their clothes so it wasn't something that was even on the table. A good few people thought it was unfair though because people had seen Jaidynn KILL two lipsyncs and knew how hindered she was by being conjoined to Tempest in a way that they couldn't get out of.
I think it would've been important to mention what lipsync specifically was the last one where someone won because they took off their wig. Because yeah, Roxxy did put an end to it, but I remember it being vague before. Like it was "vulnerability and giving it your all" until suddenly it wasn't and I don't remember when that huge change happened.
We need to remember that the first couple seasons objectively valued taking your wig off more than lanfing a jumping split, which is hilarious when you look back at it.

I was sure Shannel's headpiece drop was deliberate before she actually confessed that in the season 1 reunion: the fact she dipped her head, did a little bounce to let it fall off and perfectly catch it at such a climactic moment of the song got my Nancy Drew senses going big time, but I still appreciated the moment even more because of the intentionality =D
P.S. I also think Robbie Turner jumped off the stage on purpose as a climax to the end of the lip sync, knowing the crash mats were there
the one and only that turnes me the fuck out every time is Alyssa's and Tatiana's Shut up and Drive, because they were not only eliminated unfairly, but they both deseerrrrved to come back and the MURDERED the Lip sinc, pissed all over the stage and BOTH of them showed the Queens HOW to do it.
The six way did create a moment tho a hilarious ass moment cause I was crying on how crazzy it was
