He's allowed to pick players he's played with or against. All the names he named in that list were superstars in that era. So cut the nonsense
Very true, initially when you look at this you think wow just two specialist fast bowlers (pretty good ones at that)then you look again and the two second change bowlers are Khan and Botham, plus to backup Qadir you have Richards and Greg Chappell. Also Brearley is not the first cricketer I've heard say if you had to trust someone with your life Ian Chappell
Ian Chappel and Botham in the same changing room would be interesting!
utter choas with some colour ful characters like Viv, Imran in there too....
Add Imran too. He'd team up with Chappell and kick Botham's arse
@@solitudeinarctic787 You're kidding me aren't you?
Apparently Botham was a right bruiser. And he'd certainly have best mate slab of granite, Viv Richards on his side.
That really wouldn't end well for Imran and Chappell.
wow really greatly balanced 11.
Realy great to see Gavaskar in someone's 11
This team will win most of the tests with their guts
It's a good team but my team will beat this team
My all time 11 is
S Jayasuriya - LION
V Sehwag - BUTCHER
B Lara - MAVERICK
S Tendulkar - GENIUS
Sir G Sobers - ROLLS-ROYCE
J Kallis - COMPLETE
A Gilchrist - DEMOLITION MAN
W Akram - TERMINATOR
A Donald - GRAY HOUND
S Warne - TALISMAN
M Muralitharan - WIZARD
@@pembatamang8056 read the description.. it is not the best team according to stats but according to personal preference
a fantastic team, i think older generation is generally better than modern day players in picking up all time elevens because they have seen d past players as well as the current players. I was surprised with some teams selected by new players especially from England.
If Mike Brearley says it’s the all time best that’s good enough for me.
Brearley was a limited batsman but one of the best captains and easily the best England captain ever.
Depends on whether you expect your captain to make a significant contribution with bat and/or ball.Gooch's 151 not out against W.I. at Headingly in 1991 was arguably the finest ever innings by an England skipper.A true "Captain's Knock."
Brearly and Illingworth,to name two, were never able to inspire players with their performances.
They were more "do as I say not as I do"sort of captains.Brian Close was another although he did stand in suicidal fielding positions without any form of protection...!!😕😑😊😆
Don't overlook, either,Mike Atherton's 180-odd not out in S.Africa in 1995/96,batting for hours and hours in tremendous heat to save the Test.
Ideally, your captain should be your best,or maybe second best, player.
In fairness,Brearly opened the batting for Middlesex over many seasons and was a safe pair of hands at slip.He wisely gave up the England captaincy prior to two back-to-back series against the West Indies...!!😊☺
Returned briefly,of course, for the last four Tests of 1981 in which he did indeed make a significant contribution to the outcome of the series---gesturing from the Headingly pavilion to Ian Botham to stay in and continue slogging...!!😆😊☺
Wonderful side. Nice to see Qadir get some attention he was such an under rated bowler. Gavaskar and Greenidge are probably the 2 greatest Test openers of all time.
101% with the openers, and Shane Warne loved Qadir, yes underated and Warnes protege....
Alan knot is the greatest wicketkeeper ever not a very good batsman though but was a serious gloveman, Imran khan said "Ian Chappel was the best captain i saw", Andy Roberts was the Leader of great Wes attack, So a great team... 👍🏻
distantvoices There are better wicketkeepers than dujan, yes he is kept against greatest fast bowling line ever but alan knot and few others could have also achieved that, it is said that no one could have kept against derek underwood on wet wicket like alan knott..
Knotty was a very good,if unorthodox, batsman who often dug England out of a hole...😊
Scored centuries against fearsome W.I. attack in 1976 and against Australia, with Thommo and Pascoe,in 1977.A lot of batsmen would like to be able to say that...!!😊😕😃
I think Brearly was picking players that he'd either played against or alongside.
Derrick Murray was W.I. keeper then.Dujon came along a bit later.
You should always pick the best ' keeper for a Test Match, regardless of whether he can bat or not although, obviously,it's a bonus if he can bat.A dropped catch or missed stumping can cost much more than the 40 or 50 runs a wicketkeeper may make with the bat...😊😊
Knotty was the best although Gilchrist,Alec Stewart and Dujon run him close...😆😊
Knott was an very good lower order batsman, 5 test centuries - not a Gilchrist, nobody is, but a very good no 7. Scored centuries against great Australian & west indian bowling attacks. And he was also the best pure wicket-keeper of all time.
Alan Knott scored 5 test centuries over 30 half centuries and averaged over 30. At no 7 I would hardly refer to that as not very good. He was the finest wicketkeeper I ever saw. Rodney Marsh fairly recently
"Hats off" for Mike for having the grace to include Aussies in his "All Time XI"
I don't know how good this XI will be but the way mike has analyst his XI that was more than great.
Thanks for selection of old players. We will come to know about the legends of the game who played during that time.we can't just go by stats. Lot of things changed.
Awesome Team. I must say. This needs a match against a team of 90s Sachin Lara Warne and rest all.
My all time XI
1. Sir Don Bradman
2. Adam Gilchirst (wk)
3. Sir Viv Richards
4. Brain Lara
5. Ricky Ponting
6. Jack Kallis
7. Imran Khan (c)
8. Sir Gary Sobers
9. Malcolm Marshall
10. Wasim Akram
11. Waqar Younis or McGrath
12th man: Shane Warne
Excellent choices. The best of his era.
My all time XI would be closest to this one...wonderful selection of the 70s and 80s.
Sunny Gavaskar
Matthew Hayden
Don Bradman
Sachin Tendulkar
Steve Waugh (c)
Adam Gilchrist (wk)
Imran Khan
Shane Warne
Wasim Akram
Malcolm Marshall
Muttiah Muralitharan
What a great side. All those players at their absolute peak would make that team very difficult to beat.
Fantastic list based on the criteria. Never heard Brearley speak before. He's a clear thinker.
Great team
two Ian's at 5 & 6 ...that would be utter chaos down there in the middle & the game would come to a hault ....
Good team.
My all time XL would be
S.M.Gavaskar
C.G.Greenidge
I.V.A.Richards
G.S.Chappell
Zaheer Abbas
I.T.Botham
A.R.C.Gilchrist
S.K.Warne
Wasim Akram
D.K.Lillee
J.Garner
12th man M.J.Procter
James, Knott was a better keeper than Gilchrist and in a team of the best with that kind of batting line up I think you go for the best keeper.
Adam was a superb keeper and a phenominal batsmen and though not as good with the bat Knott was no mug, 5 test centuries, at least 30 half centuries in just around 90 games averaging over 30.
Rodney Marsh(hell of a keeper himself and I'd suggest someone who's opinion counts for hell of a lot a proud Aussie too) fairly recently said "Knott was the best keeper he's ever seen by far".
Knott's work stood up to near medium pace left arm spinner/cutter Underwood on uncovered wickets is in a class I've never seen another keeper come close to. Knott was also exceptional keeping to the quicker bowlers taking many spectacular catches. Knott made fewer mistakes than anyone I can recal.
Great Team
I think Tendulkar, Warne, Lara are difficult to leave out.
My time eleven to challange sir's team from my Era... Or since I started watching will be..(with out Lara sachin Warne Murli macgrth and akram) since everyone picks them.

keny chauhan sunil gavaskar ?? 13 centuries vs windies best batsman ever alongside sir vivian richards
Garry Sobers felt that Sunil Gavaskar is the greatest batsman because he faced fast bowling without helmets and Scored runs at home and away
Are they players you've played against or alongside?!😊Thought that was the whole point of this series...😑😊
Wow, that 11 is total quality 👌
Good that he selected his team with whom he played with and whom he played against. Predominantly 70s ..
We should respect his choices ..
Ian chappel for his captaincy i belive .
I think clive lloyd is a better choice for captaincy.
Zaheer abbas / Javed miandad can easily get if we need a strong middle order batsman from 70s...
Over all team is good. Im sure ,He would have thioght abt Bedi/ Prasanna/ Gibbs for spin optiions .
Very cerebral. Very well thought through.
Fantastic playing 11 even without Sachin
Coming from an Indian
But i would replace Chappell brothers with someone like - Dravid, Ponting,Lara ,Kallis or Sachin
@@piyushdev3508 Chappell brothers are more capable than the players you mentioned!
@@m_0106 I don't think so
Sachin and Lara probably in Top 3 batsman to play the game
Great selection. Very balanced side and I don't sense a lot of bias in his decisions either.
Class from another class
Great Team . Nice to Abdul Qadir in the mix
Excellent 11 Sir Brearly !!!!
only xi which i didnt seen sachin tendulkar in his side😯😯
Great team. Question though on why Richards is at 4 and G. Chappell at 3? More intuitive to swap them in that order
Fantastic team
Wonderful team
Great pick
Brearley certainly possessed a very good, considerate mind.
He sure got a lot out of any of the teams he captained.
It's a very strong team he's picked...wonder how Chappelli and Botham would share the dressing room 😂
Alan Knott a fine 'keeper, and grittier than Taylor or Rod Marsh.
Marsh's batting declined rapidly after being hit on the helmet at the SCG,in early WSC days (78/79)...then again, he had to face a battery of Windies fast bowler's, on rotation for a period of years...no fun in that.
Thanks for your upload 😁👍
Great team selection ♥️

Imran Khan
Wasim Akram
Waqar Younis
S Warne
Glenn McGrath
Kapil Dev (12)
Very different team chosen I'm started showing cricket in 1998 and I'm not saw the players r chosen
Great eleven, I Chappell was a great captain but with so many leaders in the team I would rather a greater batsman; Border/Miandad
Gavaskar, Sehwag, Dravid,Lara, Viv Richards, Kallis, Gilchrist, Akram, Warne, Ambrose, marshall, muralitharan,
Such magnanimity Ian Chappell absolutely despises people who adore brearley and 3xplains in detail how MB wasnt a great Captain just fortunate. Suprising he didnt put Botham in there. Btw loved this eleven and probably the most unbiased.
How have I only seen all time 11 with don bradman in it🤔
1. Matthew Hayden
2. Sachin Tendulkar
3. Sir Viv Richards (C)
4. Brian Lara
5. Jacques Kallis
6. Sir Garfield Sobers
7. Adam Gilchrist (WK)
8. Shane Warne

Legend team
This team can beat today world xi even without wearing helmets😳😳❤❤👏👏
This guy and his team doesn't have to play physically.
These guys are so brushed up they can play with minds of opposition sitting at dressing room.
My gosh😍
MY XI: GORDON GREENIDGE,RAHUL DRAVID,VIV RICHARDS,SACHIN TENDULKAR,CLIVE LLYOD(C),JAQUES KALLIS,ADAM GILCHRIST(WK),WASIM AKRAM,MALCOLM MARSHALL,GLENN MGRATH,MUTTIAH MURALITHARAN
This is basically the best team of 70's and 80's.
I would also pick Malcolm Marshall, Richard Handle, Martin Crowe in this list.
Shehwag, Sachin, Viv Richards, Brian Lara, Virat kholi, Kapil, imran, dhoni(c),shaneWarne, wasimakram, walsh
Yes, in his era the best world XI
Where is Sir Garry Sobers? The greatest batsman I ever saw and a very good LFM bowler, with over 200 test wickets. Sobers should be in at 5, instead of Ian Chappell and Imran could captain the team. Also, though I'm not arguing him for inclusion, Michael Vaughan was a very capable test captain, lest we forget, managed Kevin Pietersen beautfully.
I expected the 7 foot Joel Garner instead of Roberts but still a great team.
One of the best team in the world
To defeat this xi my ix is Barry Richards, Bradman, sachin, Lara, sobers, hedlee, Mike proctor, Gilchrist, Shane warns, murli, marshal
Excellent team! but Mr. Sowrav Ganguly definitely argued for one player. Do you guess, who is he?
Great that this is a side in theory only- otherwise how will Ian Chappel and Ian Botham play in the same team?
Good to see Qadir get a pick. He was probably the first to ball the fast googly something that Rashid Khan does these days.
All big names in this team
Brearley was excellent captain- picked most of his players from 80 & 90s. Have to say, there was no way Abdul qadir was in the same class as Shane warne - and any team must have Brian Lara (the best and classist batsman in the world)
You can't compare a man playing 50+ years ago to a guy who retired relatively recently.
And i have to say even shane warne himself has said before abdul qadir was the best leg spin bowler
@@hamzaiqbal6545 Shane Warne got tips from Late Abdul Qadir during 1994 tour of Pakistan. Great bowler but overshadowed by Warne. Same is the case with Saqlain as Murali became more popular than him.
No one picks abd
Top pick, batsmens of today with the flat tracks, helmets and protective equipment, the 1 bouncer per over, high over rates cannot compare against those facing WI 5 man 90mph+ pace attack, those were men today it just boys flat track bullies
I mean, it isn't a bad XI for who he played with or against but c'mon, like there has to be better options like Marshall, GR Vishwanath, or someone else rather then Chappel or English WKB
Marshall came much later. And agree with you over selection of Greg Chappal.
I think Mohinder Amarnath, would be a good option at 3. He was a very good player of both spin and fast bowling. And he can even include Clive Lloyd in there, in that way he would have got a very good captain. And then switch Richards at number 3.
Don't think he played against Marshall. He would have been out first ball if he had...😊😅😆
All Time indian ODI xi- Sachin,Sehwagh,Ganguly,Virat,Yuvi,MSD(C),Kapil Dev,Bhajji,Zaheer,Bhuvi,Bumrah,Rahit Sharma(12th).
This XI will eat any other alltime XIs for breakfast.
Great side
MIke Brearely, cricket legend. Real thought went into his eleven. Loved the picking of Qadir and Roberts.
Mike was the best cricket captain of England. I suppose you can not choose yourself. So Ian Chappel will captain Ian Botham, there will be mayhem all around. Sunil almost walked out of the cricket field in Australia with his team. May be let us assume all of these grew together in one country cause any other way, they can not gel.
@@GK-ui8fv i would've replaced ian with his brother greg
