well, I suppose they could hold those island had they won the war. Look at the US, it basically gained its independence by defeating the brits. So beating your opponent in a formal war is the way to go when it comes to claiming territories. Diplomatic options never really worked.

Argentina aren't equipped to fight Britain. Even with our miniscule army and defenseman budget.

No jodamos !

*Why is the Falklands even an issue? These islands NEVER BELONGED TO ARGENTINA. They make this claim based on this ridiculous idea that they "inherited" the islands from the Spanish empire. Okay, firstly, that's not how it works, and secondly - THERE IS NO SPANISH EMPIRE ANYMORE. Argentina is an INDEPENDENT country, not part of the Spanish empire. Therefore the Falkland Islands have absolutely NOTHING to do with Argentina.*
*The other claim they make is that the islands belong to them just because of the "close proximity" of the islands. That's like saying that Britain has a valid territorial claim to Iceland or the Faroe Islands just because it's near. It's ludicrous. Furthermore, the terrain and general environment of the Falkland Islands is completely different from Argentina. It's literally nothing like Argentina, so to claim that it's part of Argentina is just wrong.*
*And lastly, no Argentinians have ever lived on the Falklands. The islanders are staunchly British and want to remain so. There really is nothing to debate here. It's clear Argentina only wants the Falklands because of the oil. That's the only reason they're so interested in them.*
    *Falklands are British. Case closed.*

    JUNE 15, 2014
Argentina received a "unanimous support" of the 133 members of the Group of 77 + China that met in Bolivia, and included in their final declaration a major support for Argentina's position on the question of the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands
Representatives of 133 countries reaffirmed "the need for governments of Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations in accordance with the principles and objectives of the charter and resolutions of the UN General Assembly, in order to find as soon as possible a peaceful solution to the sovereignty dispute".

Liberation Day statement by the Legislative Assembly of the Falkland Islands issued to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the liberation from the illegal invasion and occupation of their homeland by Argentina.
      14 June 2014
This year is one of commemoration; the Falkland Islands are preparing events to commemorate those who lost their lives in both the Battle of Coronel and Battle of the Falklands in 1914. In this particular month we remembered the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings and today, particularly for Falkland Islanders, we remember those that liberated the Falkland Islands from the illegal occupation by Argentine forces, in 1982. We shall never forget all of those who lost their lives during that terrible war.
Liberation Day is also a day when we reflect on the fact that we are a people with almost two centuries of development to look back on with pride, as well as much to look forward to.
It was just over one year ago when 92% of the electorate voted in a referendum on whether we wanted to retain our status as a British Overseas Territory, with a resounding 99.8% in favour of doing so. The result sent an unequivocal and powerful message to the world about our determination to steer our own future. This was not just the decision of Islanders of British descent but all of the Islanders, from different nationalities who have decided to make the Falkland Islands their home.
We continue to remind those that will listen, that the UN Charter upholds the basic right of all people to determine their own future. We exercised that right very clearly last year, and call on the international community to support that inalienable human right.
We have our own Constitution and are internally self-governing. Our political partnership with the UK is clearly defined and mutually agreed. We are fortunate to be in a relatively strong fiscal position, and are economically self-sufficient, apart from our defence. A defence that is only required due to the war in 1982 and Argentina’s ongoing claim, and is the minimum it can be to act as a deterrent against such action in the future.
Disappointingly, there have been a series of concerted efforts from the Argentine Government to stifle our economic and political development over the last ten years. These efforts are often in contravention of international law and have included:
      • A decree attempting to limit merchant shipping access to the Islands for trade purposes;
      • A blanket ban on charter flights entering the Islands;
      • A failure to punish or even condemn those carrying out physical intimidation of international cruise liners visiting the Falklands;
      • Amended legislation with clear penalties of fines and imprisonment of any executives involved in the oil exploration in the waters surrounding the Islands;
      • A Presidential decree making it illegal for fishing companies operating in Argentina to also work in the Falklands; and
      • A persistent refusal to work within the South Atlantic Fisheries Commission agreement to co-operate in the protection of the ecosystem in the South West Atlantic.
We will continue to develop our economy, for the benefit of our people, and for the preservation of our homeland. That is the best tribute to those who gave their ‘today’ for our ‘tomorrow’.

+PM 🎵 If you honestly think Argentina could retake the Falklands, you need to look more into your country's current state. You lack and kind of modern, capable air-to-air fighter and all your ships constantly remain docked in port due to lack of training, maintenance and spare parts. YOU LOST YOUR OWN SUBMARINE WHILE IT WAS ON AN EXERCISE AND WE SENT A PATROL SHIP AND AN AIRCRAFT TO HELP YOU LOOK FOR IT. Hell, the 4 Typhoons currently stationed on the Falklands have more air-to-air capability than the entire Argentine Air Force combined. When Obama came to visit you, he had to use F-16s to escort Air Force One because you couldn't offer anything capable of a proper escort. What more do you need to suggest the incompetence of the Argentine Armed Forces? You cannot reclaim it, so you will never have it, regardless of what history says. Hell, many Brits trace back to the Normans of France, but you don't se France claiming sovereignty over the UK. Whoever has the might to hold it, gets it. Look at this video for more information on what would happen if you tried to reclaim the Falklands and for more information on the weakness of your military.

Except that the only people who matter - the Falklanders - unequivocally REJECTED that proposal.
They will NEVER accept Argentine dominion over them!
I rather liked what one Falklander said in response to Hector Timerman's assertion that the islands would be Argentine "within 20 years".
The Falklander said "They've got more chance of flying their flag on the moon than they have of flying it here!"
    Self-determination for the Falkland Islands.

I'm fourteen years old, I think that the “ Falkland Islands ” are Argentine but I don't understand why we are still angry. If they invaded and won the war, we would have to follow our life. But I don't think that the english people was the good guys in history. Invaded something that had and has our same territory and it's in the Argentine sea... I don't know... it was bad...

Some people say they should be british forever but why? Because will they be in better hands? I don't think it's okay to say this, because they don't know how the “ Falkland Islands ” would be in Argentine hands... Maybe, I would be scared with our actual presidents, and more with Mauricio.

Lots of other countries have lost territory, but they accept it and move on. Detroit, USA was once the 3rd largest city in Quebec, Canada. A lot of territory that Canadians felt was part of Canada became part of USA. Similarly, a lot of Mexico became part of USA. That territory is much more important than Malvinas and South Georgia. I think many wealthy Argentinians should think more about repaying their private debts like honest people. Plus Argentina should pay the bond holders more instead of spending money on new subways lines or expressway extensions. I´m not talking about paying the vulture funds. I´m talking about paying pensioners in italy and Spain who trusted Argentina. I understand why the Falklanders don´t want to be part of Argentina.

The main reason that the beautiful Falkland Islands are British is that they have been historically and culturally integrated into Britain for generations and feel very comfortable and calm being British. Those islanders deserve to be well treated and respected by foreigners. I am from Colombia and I wish to know one day that paradise that is the Falklands. God bless you.

the islands are Spanish, until in 1810 they are inherited from Spain and become from Argentina. In 1825: Great Britain recognizes the independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, and does not make any objection on the Malvinas issue, in The Treaty of Friendship, Navigation and Trade signed between both countries and Great Britain, must hand over the lands to their legitimate owner, Argentina, for the reasons explained, fully owns the rights of the MALVINAS, SANDWICH AND SOUTH GEORGIES ISLANDS. And btw fuck you colombian m8.

    • @Rodrigo_Vega
      @Rodrigo_Vega 2 роки тому +2

Yea, well... that's sort of what colonialism does for ya'. If a country has an interest in holding a territory and they ship a bunch of people off to distant land with the explicit purpose of waving their flag there and pay for them to have a comfortable living there, it's of little surprise that they would self-identify as belonging to whatever country sent them. I don't think that's what's being questioned here.
The issue here is with a nation from the Global North holding up a fort to loom over a developing nation. Extracting it's natural ressources, survailing it's space. Consider something as petty as fishing rights. The fish schools that swim by the British exclusion zone are the same that swim by the Argentinian coasts. By claiming rights over this area the British are taking food from the mouth of Argentinian children, by taxing them they are taking funding from their hospitals, etc. Sounds overly dramatic, but you get the point. Same applies to deposits of energy ressources like oil and the like. Not to speak of the geo-political interest of control over the area. A powerful, adversarial nation leering over you, controlling the air and naval space, with proven militar capabilities overseeing your activities, your movements, your political alignment. Would seem kind of off, right? It's invariably invasive, even if you think they are "the good guys" in the story.
How would you feel as a Colombian if _Isla de Malpelo_ was historically claimed and currently under Chinese control, and the People's Republic of China complete with happy Chinese-identifying citizens, was just there, selling your fish to Russia and North Korea survailing your airspace, etc. Maybe you'd be uneasy about it too.
But pre-existing colonialism is what we call a "wicked problem" with no obvious solutions. I don't think anyone should ever expect the kelpers (or any other colonists around the world for that matter) to be forced away from their family homes or re-educated into a new identity. That would be ridiculous _and_ cruel. I hope it's possible that at some point in the future a new deal for _all_ overseas colonies around the world will be reached. So that developing nations get their due right to their natural ressources and national sovereignty while the colonist keep their own rights to a friendly co-existance and local use of their personal land and local ressources and access to cultural and logistical connection to whetever place in the world they feel tied to.
You can live in any place of the world and feel that you and the people around you belong to somewhere else, after all. Or hold a cultural/historical tie with some other nation of people living far away. That's why state and nationality/ethinicity are two different things.

    • @juanmag8405
      @juanmag8405 Рік тому

I agree but also would like to add that those kelpers and bases are there with the taxes of the whole UK tax payers. I’m not sure (I just think so) that they are being subsidized by those, they probably are. If the UK governent pays them the transport back to UK and stops sending money there, there would stop being Kelpers in Malvinas.

This idea is logical and reasonable and I will explain: for more than twelve generations their people (the Kelpers) live there. So, they have the ancestries, the language and the traditions of british people. And most important: they had the freedom to make their choices, so, think about that, argentinians! Argentina is in such bad state that it is ready to collapse. Britain on the other hand knwos how to not destroy a country and let criminal gangs overpower their government.

I just find it so fucking stupid that after all these years people are still upset over the fact that the Falkland Islands are British. Just fucking get over it. I'm Argentinean and I hear about this all the time, about how the Malvinas are Argentinean and it's like, wow you're still hating each other after so many years. People are dumb.

Don't you see the irony when you argue against one colonist, saying they don't belong there due to the distance between them and their "old country", but by doing that you argue for other colonists, i.e., the Argentinians.

BRITISH CASUALITIES AT THE BATTLE OF DARWIN GOOSE GREEN.
However, in the official list released in Great Britain, after the combat, there are no dead
      soldiers, they are all cadres.
Returning to Hastings and Jenkins, it is initially mentioned in work 17 dead and 35 wounded, but reading it herself that the above mentioned losses do not correspond to the effects and
situations quoted in these two paragraphs of the same:
"... Keeble ordered the Company A to converge on Meadow
Of Goose and will support Company C. Impossible, was answered
that the casualties have reduced the troops too ... "
Or as like this other paragraph: "... Terrible combination of artillery,
Mortars, machine guns and anti-aircraft guns on the Company
C "... When his men advanced to the school building.
It burns out the school of Prado of the Goose, occupied by the British and destroyed by the Argentine anti-aircraft artillery. Photo taken from the Argentine lines by the Tte. Esteban.

In Thompson's book he says things like these:
"... the first attempts by Ca A to clean Darwin Hill
Were unsuccessful and casualties began to increase. "
"... 800 meters from the right flank of Ca A, Ca B was
Trapped by the direct and indirect fire of the enemy
on the exposed skirts discovered Boca House ... and the casualties continued
      increasing...
"... so that at 11.10 am of the morning, after almost at
6:00 pm, the battle over Darwin Hill was over, but not without
had suffered severe losses: the commanding officer, the
assistant, second in command of Ca A and 9 young people
His soldiers and soldiers died and 30 others were injured ... ".
"... a Section of Engineers had orders to nail them cannons
when captured; This fire inflicted several casualties on Ca
C as his men advanced towards the school building ... "
"... when the men advanced, the enemy 26 a flag
The Head of Section with a group, restarted the fire and both he and 2
      non-commissioned officers were killed ... ".
Evidently, those severe casualties that continually "followed
increasing "do not correspond to the information of" only 20
      died and 37 wounded. "

Most recently, Thompson reports that on May 28 at night:
"... I went to the BMA and Campaign Hospital on a boat
Rigid for my usual nocturnal visit. The wounded lay
Silent in long lines, waiting for them to operate, subjected
To interventions, or pale and sleepy after
      Surgery, while doctors and nurses
your surroundings. As always I was struck by the bravery of
Those young people, many of them horribly mutilated ... ".
Now, if the wounded were "only 35", how was it "lay in
long lines. "Two long lines of 17 wounded each one? Three long
Rows of 13 wounded each? Or there were not so many rows, nor were these
So long; Or there were more than 35 wounded.
However, it does not seem to have been a simple exaggeration of the
Because he then shows that his concern was
And it was a lot, since it says: "... I turned to the radiotelephone to
Talk to Northwood (Operations Center in Great Britain) and
Inform them about the battle, as well as asking them to press
For the hospital ship Uganda to approach, so that
The evacuation of wounded could be initiated by means of
helicopters and thus leave the hospital free to receive new
      wounded" …”
So you have to believe that the "long lines" of the wounded were
As the number had saturated the hospital and there were
"To leave him free." In addition, "new wounded" were still waiting.
Then the wounded were more; Well over 35.
We could end by quoting the words of the Reverend Father
Santiago Mora, who served as Chaplain in Darwin and reports:
      Doctors in action at Darwin.

"... I only buried Argentine dead, because the british had already done it with theirs, in Puerto San Carlos. As soon as the combat ended, they were the ones who cleared the battlefield of the dead and
Herds. Newly in the 3 days they let us get out to look for bodies of our men.I think they did that so we would not know how many casualties they had. I think in Darwin the English lost five times more men than we. I came one had about 200 casualties. Because the Regiment
Which attack us, paratroopers. He had about 500 men and they were seen to suffer heavy losses. I fell more of a third party ... ".
In synthesis, The English sources consulted differ in the number of dead, between 17, 18 and 28; as well as in the wounded, ranging from 35 to 37. But no one cited 14 dead. As the view
All sources spoken in English, between 1, 4 and 9 soldiers of the dead. In a
If the name and surname of a dead soldier is given. But the official report of Great Britain,
Combat, includes between the only officers and non-commissioned officers; No soldier.
All sources quoted, of English origin, speak of casualties in global terms. Very superior to the
Numbers that they then cite. There is talk of a company or its losses prevent it from continuing to support the attack
Of another company receiving a flood of shrapnel, of casualties that were still in effect, and of 12/14 dead, (60/70 % of the official total) and 30 wounded (80% of the official total), hearing only took 6 hours of combat.
The Commander of the British Forces (Thompson) describes long rows of wounded, a hospital saturated with casualties. Plans for storing a hospital vessel and waiting for the arrival of more wounded in the next hours.
At the center with pipe, Brigadier Thompson, author of one of the sources consulted.
