congratulations man, welcome to dad club. besides no privacy, no sleep, no free time and loads of bills its a walk in the park...
And poop so much poop. I never thought I would have so many conversations about poop as I do now with a kid but here we are 😂
@@seanlandsman7516 oh yeah forgot about that... i have a PHD in poopology. you'll be amazed how many different types of poop there is and each different from the other
This is such a beautiful piece! Maybe a few words on what to improve on the design: You designed the sides to end/head connection of the bed to be perfectly flush and with only minimal edge roundover (if any). Due to the natural properties of wood this line will start to look "wobbly" since the mechanical fixings will not provide glue joint tightness on the whole length. 2 ways to improve: 1.) Increase the roundover slightly (to about 2mm radius) to create a deliberate shadowline which hides the "wobbly" edge (and small inaccuracies). 2.) Create a deliberate offset between head/end and sides. Set the end/head about 2mm or more (then your eye will start noticing) to the inside of the crib. It does not matter if it is more because it will always seem like a deliberate choice but if it is less it will appear as unintentional, sloppy craftmanship which does not do your work justice. Again: Just details only a meticulous craftman will notice and a person with no design experience will just see it what it is: A gift of a loving expectant father. All the best to you, Alex
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to provide detailed critiques Alex! Good catch on the edges being flush. Luckily I made the bolt holes slightly large, so I can actually provide a shadow line by tapping the sides before tightening the bolts. It wasn't intentional though, I like your suggestions better!
Congratulations on the baby. Lovely job. You might want to consider drilling a series of holes in the base to allow the mattress to breathe.
@@dkbuildsYour welcome, I am only aware of it as I did the same thing on m daughters first bed and within a few months the mattress selled sweaty.
I have been wondering what to do with my moving blankets since we had moved 2 years ago. Now I know 😉
Congrats and nice job. I built my son’s crib out of maple and mahogany. Also made a matching changing table and dresser. Although he outgrew the crib pretty quickly, the other furniture I made are pieces I hope he’ll use for years.
Thank you so much Andrew! I bet maple and mahogany looks really great. When my kid outgrows the crib, I'm hoping he'll use it for his own kids one day :)
Just found this, and fixed that issue by subscribing and belling.
Congratulations on your upcoming child - that's awesome. We won't expect much content soon.
I'd love your thoughts on how to use this kind of design but work in a drop-down side, as well as a way to lower the bed height as the baby grows... none yet but I do plan on living to see grandkids here.
Also - I'll 4th or 5th the suggestion on holes in that plywood bottom, but mainly for the reason that you will be truly shocked at the volume, frequency and variety of liquids that come out of such a tiny, tiny being. Not to scare you, that's just the way it is.
Last - good job, dad. Make sure you take care of the person doing all the work. Your 45 seconds of contributing caused this and don't count for s**t. LOL
I don't understand why it doesn't have more likes, not only does it do everything manually, which is useful for those of us who don't have machines, but it also shows how to fix it if something goes wrong. Of the videos I watched, I don't remember any showing how to fix it. 👌💯 Greetings from Argentina
Very beautiful work, I like it very much. Here are some of my personal experiences. All the weight of the bed board is ultimately distributed on the four screws at both beam's ends. As the baby grows, weight increasing , and more and more jumps, it MAY cause cracks at the screws holes. It is recommended to add some support to the bed board for more safety.
Those are great tips, thanks Eric. I agree, I planned to keep a close watch on the bolts and probably screw in some temporary blocking for extra support if necessary. Thanks!
Very beautifully done! I love the shop sounds instead of music.
Congratulations on the new baby, you’ll love the parenting journey.
It was such an amazing watch. I love how inventive you are when it comes to the smallest things, like cutting the dowels at a consistent size. I missed your videos, they're incredibly relaxing.
Congratulations on the baby.
Thanks so much for the kind words Lucie, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :) I'm glad to have you as a viewer!
Awesome... it's always great seeing your original woodworking methods and tools. Looks great 👍 👌
CONGRATULATIONS on your new born. I hope everything goes well. You built an incredible crib, BRAVO!... One suggestion. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have some holes in the crib's platform to allow ventilation and prevent mold :)... accept a big HUG
That's a great tip, thank you! I'll keep a close eye out for mold/damp under the mattress and will drill some holes if necessary. Thanks for sharing!
I was delighted to see you posting again. I've been a fan for a long time and "borrowed" your design for the jewelry box and made one for my daughter after dumbing down the joinery to my skill level. She loves it. Congratulations on your baby. Thanks for sharing your skill. Ed B.
I'm honored to have you inspired by one of my designs, I'm glad your jewelry box build turned out well. Your daughter is lucky to have you, Ed!
Congrats on the baby, my first was born last June. Beautiful crib, love the way it turned out. The cherry was a great choice.
Thank you so much for the kind words Adam, glad you liked it! I'm glad I went with cherry for sure.
My baby is due in June as well and i'm watching your video to build a crib :D
Beautiful piece! Thanks for sharing the build I really liked how you balanced some traditional joinery with some practical joinery so it could be assembled easily and adjusted as needed. Congrats!
Thank you very much for the kind words McStay! Glad you liked my hybrid approach :)
Absolutely beautiful you do such amazing work a true artist and craftsmen. Congratulations on your new baby 🎉🎈
Nice build!
"Several months ago, I was on a walk and found my crib tree. I approached the tree, murdered it, left it to cure in my woodshop, and have begun working it into a crib for my upcoming child." -- Ron Swanson
Beautiful work as always! Love the choice of cherry here. And CONGRATULATIONS on the upcoming birth. Hope all goes well and good health to all.
Congratulations dk! No long form for a while had me worried--it all makes sense now. Crib looks amazing!
As always great content David but more importantly congratulations on the new baby! DKBuilds, CKBakes and now DKBaby! Maybe everyone in the family will have a UA-cam channel!
AMAZING video as always and congratulations on the baby! EDIT: And yeah, echoing the comments below: you want some airflow under the mattress, to prevent mold and stuff. That's why grown-up beds always have slats.
Thanks so much Satchmo! I hear ya, I'll consider drilling some holes through the platform if necessary in the future. Thanks for the feedback!
Truly amazing work, Dave! Awesome looking crib! 😃
It's great to see you again! And congrats on the new baby!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks so much MC, always love seeing you in the comments. I'm glad you liked the video! Stay safe with your family too!
Awesome! I have a baby due in June 2024 a well and I’m looking to build a crib and changing dresser. Thanks for the inspiration!
That was a lot of work, Dave. It came out stunning. Especially like the little jigs for repeat cuts, very clever. I'm a big fan of homemade jigs for things, as I've made a few myself for hand tool work. That looked like maybe a hardwax oil of some sort. Mind telling what it was?
Thanks so much Dons, glad to see you in the comment section again! I used wipe on poly for this, but I'm letting it cure for a full year before a baby goes near it. It's supposed to be food safe after 30 days
Just the other day I did a search for you to see if you were active on any socials since it had been a while. Made my day seeing another video, nice surprising topic as well! I love the straight forward designs that are well executed and don't have gimmicky clickbait while letting the work and the subtitles do the talking. Congrats man!
Thanks so much Brad, yeah it's been a while since I've had time to make a video. I'm back now! I appreciate you!
Віншую з будучым папаўненнем!
Ложак для dk baby атрымаўся выдатным!
Сочым і далей за вашай творчасцю!=)
thought I was so smart, putting a blue bucket on the other side of my planer, but this bro's got "moving blanket money." nice build broski.
Sidenote: some of my lady friends are subscribed based solely on watching your hands work. Apparently you've "got it." Don't shoot the messenger!
Congrats on the upcoming baby arrival and top work as always. A long way off but have you made plans to change the crib into a small bed when baby is older?
Thanks so much Andy! No plans for that yet, besides the ability to drop the mattress down low. When the time comes, I might build a new front panel to convert this to a bed. Or, maybe I'll have a second baby by then and will have to just build a toddler bed from scratch!
I've been waiting for a long time. I'ts my favorite channel. I wish dkbaby good health and good luck. Congratulations!
오랫동안 기다렸습니다. 제가 정말 좋아하는 채널입니다. 태어날 아이의 건강과 행운을 기원합니다. 축하드립니다!
Congratulations, DK! Lovely work! Are those Veritas back saws you were using? How do you like them?
Yes my cross cut saw is a Veritas. It's OK, it's a little light for my taste. I may upgrade to a LN or Rob Cosman saw in the future.
Félicitations de France 🍼👶🐤
Congrats on little DKBuilds! And congrats on having the crib assembled 4 months before the baby is supposed to arrive!
Great having you back on UA-cam as well!
Incredible work man! Curious if you have a rough estimate for how many hours you put into it?
Thanks Peter! Hmm I'd say it took me maybe 25-30 hours? That's a really rough estimate though, I don't keep a strict schedule or keep track of time :)
I do find it amusing how much you look like Zelenskyy (Ukraine President). Lovely crib, hopefully the kid doesn't chew it up lol.
Lol you aren't the first person to notice the likeness :) Pure coincidence! Glad you liked the build :)
