This match was Serena vs Watson + the whole crowd. I applaud Serena for her mentality out there if it was me I would of panicked and lost so easily but she fought through it what a great champion she is 👌🏾
Most of the crowd there were a few Americans in the crowd cheering for Serena, I'm British but wanted Williams to win as I'm a huge Serena fan
This was a game Serena showed she is the toughest even against Watson and the entire court. 🎉
I remember being so stressed watching this match. Stomach in knots. Serena fan through and through. Heather played very well unfortunately I haven’t seen this quality from her since this match.

More accurate would be they try their best for a set and most of the time they accept the inevitable by the second set and lose like 2-6- 0-6

Only Serena can win a match like this incredible mental toughness. Down 0-3 in final set yet Serena got tougher and Heather choked. Heather got nervous in the end.

This was a tough match for the G.O.A.T.....she was playing several opponents that day; Heather, the Brits, History and Herself all in one match. Heather played her heart out....and lost. Proof that Serena is the greatest. Even when her opponents bring their A-game and she brings her C-game, she is unbeatable! The crowd cheered for every error Serena made and every winner from Heather. The bias was just too evident but I guess it's understandable with Heather being a home-girl against the World #1

Amazing match. Both players had a lot more winners than unforced errors. Serena looks ruthless on court but in real she champions other players successes and is well liked among other players which is rare for the women’s circuit.

Just watched this again. I see now that Heather was outclassed in every department. She hardly made one winning shot it was all Serena's errors. It's tough to generate pace when your partner hits the ball so softly. But it gave the crowd something to cheer about at least!!!
That female commentator wanted Watson to win so bad she got quite when she saw the handwriting on the Wall that Serena had the momentum to win. When Watson was ahead that female commentator couldn’t stop talking about her and what she needed to do.
I don’t understand why this match is being touted as being of the “highest” quality? Sure, it’s close, but we all know Serena is below her best. Despite the winners to unforced errors ratio, her movement in this match is sluggish and uncoordinated at times. As some have pointed out after the match came out, had Serena played her “A” game, Watson would’ve been destroyed, rather than narrowly beaten.
Heather played really well, about as well as she would ever play, but aside from the hype, I don’t see the reason this is a “classic.”
The only reason people (mostly from the UK) call this a classic is because this was the first time Serena faced a Britain at Wimbledon. Nothing about this match was a classic.

Agreed , it was no classic tennis wise. If there wasn't a Brit playing it would've been a damp squib of an atmosphere. But it was exiting me being a Brit for that reason. The crowd got wayy too exited but that's what happens here. Kudos to heather but never count Serena out!
This crowd was almost as terrible as the 2003 French open SF vs Henin. They just forgot to boo Serena.

I remember watching this match live from a British pub here in South Florida, with my mom and me being, I think, the only two Americans in the place. The crowd there watching with us couldn't have been more respectful and even though there was lively cheering for Watson from the Brits there, it was nothing like the poor show by the crowd on Number 1 that day.

Looking back on this match I remember it was a Friday evening and tbh I think most of the crowd were a bit boozed-up. Us Brits can be quite rowdy under these circumstances, but I think it wasn't out of any disrespect to Serena...they were just enjoying the drama and wanted Heather to win badly. Unfortunately Heather didn't have the ground game to beat Serena, although she did serve well which I think kept her in the match
Ah that makes sense (although towards the end of the final that year they were pretty bad too). But the support for her in the first round in 2022 was nice to see and kinda backs your point, I think there was also just a point where she was just too damn good and dominant

I remember watching this match..Watson had this match but she choked towards the end when the realised the magnitude of what she was about to do...the whole of the UK held its breath in anticipation willing Watson on towards the final hurdle but alas it wasn't to be...

Sometimes I wonder if these commentators just talk without basis. Heather has always been a up and down player. She is one of my favourite players but she lacks something (can't put my finger on it) that's preventing her from going forward.
I think Heather is missing Problem solving on court skills while under pressure.

I love her problem solving skills, but most of all I love that she is being loved by her box and encouraged to play to the best of her abillities, therefore she does not play against her opponents, I find, she mostly toys with her opponents, adepts to there style and as we know mostly wins.
