Well, Historia Civilis... I have been following you for like 1 month... Now I am doing what I like to do when I see a good channel: I subscribe and go to the beginning to see every single video. And MAN... Holy cow... Your videos have improved a ton!!!
It's still possible and I still hope he does. Too bad I don't have any money to back him on Patreon with. I would absolutely propose and vote for this topic.
My favorite thing about your channel is seeing you describe specific battles. I can't even imagine how much work goes into that and how much crap you must get from other historians who disagree. Still the general consensus seems to be that people agree with you or at least like your interpretations of historical events because you present it in a clear but skeptical way without pushing an agenda. I just started watching your channel based on your most liked videos and I've liked all of them but to be honest it is pretty difficult to enjoy some of the earlier ones due to really bad audio recording. So my question is, would you ever consider re-recording some of your earlier audio? Your voice really keeps people engaged and it would be awesome if we could hear your actual clear voice recordings in some of these videos. I know it would be a shitload of work and probably not even close to worth the effort but just wondering if you are ever considering doing a new voice over.
You've come an incredibly long way. Please keep up your hard work and release of the amazing videos! Been your subscriber for 3 years and I love to go back and rewatch some of your older videos.
I agree, it's pure cancer. His voice is ear cancer. And the shitty background music is too loud. But dear god. Where do you even buy a microphone that low quality? This is 2014, not fucking 1901. Studio condenser microphones were selling on eBay for as little as $10 in 2014 too, with production quality equipment shipping new for $90 like a Rode NT-USB.
His voice is not "ear cancer". He makes great videos about a subject many people are interested in and FOR FREE and the only thing you have to say is that?
Here's a thought. The Republic was basically an accident. They simply never could get a popular enough king after Tarquin, so they just started making the Interrex's terms longer and longer and began reorganizing the Senate to actually run things.
Revisiting this video after several years for a refresher and holy crap, that sub count! I never subscribed myself because I only was interested in your roman politics videos, but massive congrats dude! I just decided to subscribe myself, more than anything so I don't have to spend an hour trying to remember and search for these videos again lol.
Why so bad audio quality? The video is very interesting, but the sound is just awfull. Please, if you are in the mood remake it with proper sound, it would be awsome.
Hey, man, love your videos! I also love your songs. I was hoping you could tell me the names of the songs playing in the backgrounds of your videos? Please?
It also helps that the cruelty of the Roman kings was legend - I'm sure some of it was inflated propaganda, but I suspect that this reputation made it quite easy to gain the public's approval for the ascension of the Senate to the position of authority they sought.
The first time the interrex shuffle happened was after the "disappearance" of Romulus, and it lasted a whole year. At first, they didn't plan on finding a new permanent king, rather deciding to kick the can down the road. Every interrex had their own agenda though, and it caused a lot of chaos having a new one every week. Eventually they decided to find a new king, and that guy was king Numa. I suppose that every interregnum got more and more standardized as described in this video, until the usurpers of the late kingdom. (of course this is all legendary so whatever)
I would like to support the effort of those who want these remade with new audio - please, they are so interesting but so difficult to enjoy due to the sound quality...
I reeeeeally hope you will maintain your videos and UA-cam will not delete them. Please. I intend to uso them as material to write my work, if it's no problem. Also, if you could recommend some literature on the subject, especially Roman's monarchy. I'm finding difficult to find them. Thank you, I love your videos and watch almost on a daily basis.
I think this book might be for you. A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome: Daily Life, Mysteries, and Curiosities. (I can't italicize on my phone, sorry, or underline). This book takes place in the year 115, and talks about the daily lives of citizens and high powered people during the rule of the Empire by kings and not a senate. This book takes place during Trajan's rule by the way.
That book is next on my list! The author Alberto Angelo also wrote a book called _The Reach of Rome_ wherein the narrative follows the travels of a single sesterces as it works its way across the length and breadth of the empire - also in Trajan's reign, I think. It was absolutely wonderful and I heartily second your recommendation. Usually books that try to do things like these two don't really work - too cutesy or a badly juxtaposed literary conceit on top of a normal book, etc. But the one I have already read is brilliant and I'm sure the other is too!

I know that most of this was probably invented post hoc, but what, legally, stopped an interrex from simply proclaiming by royal decree that they were king, or just say that the office lasted until the death of the interrex?
He wasn't technically breaking any rules. Seeing as he had the right to make them all. No government would be overthrown, his term would just be extended a little.
hmmm assumed it was inherited before the republic. Inheritance of leadership seems to have always been problematic for the Romans. lol Was the Interrex bared from choosing himself or could he be chosen after being Interrex or do we have records to indicate?
Please pin this, or better do your old videos again... Please Edit: a crackpot idea, maybe two interrex's kept giving each other the role, leading to the two concul system?
Why the consistent shape of the senate? It that how they sat? Does the horseshoe shape matter or just what you chose to use when describing details of the senate?
Hey mate - going back to the start and the qual of even these early vids is great, and so is your presentation, but your mic pretty clearly let you down. Might be worth spending an hour or 2 re-voicing these with the existing scripts and re-upping, there were points it was hard to understand, and you would probably get a few new views.
