- Special Valentine's Day episode here with a look back over some of the various, memorable romances we've gotten in JRPGs over the years. Cheesy moments galore, there are still some that are quite touching and relatable as well. Hope you enjoy the nostalgia trip.

One thing I liked about Cecil and Rosa was how they came into the story as a couple. It was kind of refreshing to see a couple knowing how they feel for each other and saving the world together. It was just cool to see a change from all the halfway will-they/won’t-they waffling

Joshua and Estelle are so underrated, thanks for mentioning them! i first played Trails in the Sky first in 2017 and was blown away despite the "old" graphics...
Are they what people call step siblings? I never thought they are even anything like that.
@@rockdesu Technically they're step siblings. But they were not raised together since birth, so Westermarck effect doesn't steps in. And Estelle is at best confused about her feelings while Joshua never really saw her as a sibling. And I say this as a person that goes "yucky" when I see incestuous relationships in anime and other media, but the romance between Joshua and Estelle is done very well and tastefully.
@@sieg-sandrodeshannon3035 I mean, they aren't really "step siblings" either. Estelles father just took in a homeless boy. Didn't even adopt him properly either.
As someone who is a sucker for romance, this was wonderful! If I may. I want to mention a pretty underrated and unknown JRPG couple. Reiji Arisu and Xiamu from Namco X Capcom for the PS2.
This is a japan only tactic RPG crossover. And they are the 2 main original characters created specifically for the game.
Their banter is absolutely great! With Reiji being very snarky and straight-faced, while Xiamu 90% of the time speaks in references to many different games and animes.
The game also delves into the depressing implications of someone having a way longer lifespan than that of their significant other.
They continued to appear in games like Super Robot Wars Endless Frontier and Project X Zone. And they are always a joy to see.
Nice one! I've heard about that game and was always curious about it as a kid but couldn't get past the language barrier unfortunately. I did play Project X Zone and remember them from there, though to be honest I don't remember much about their stories as I don't think they were the main characters there. Sounds like they get much more fleshed out in their original game (obviously) so that's pretty sweet. Not sure if there's an english patch but it seems like a game I would be into, might have to give it a go eventually if so!
@@GamingBroductions While they are playable characters in the first Project X Zone, in the 2nd one they become the main characters again.
While Namco X Capcom does have an English Fantranslation, it has quite a bit of misspellings and odd grammar that understandably would turn off some players.
It does have however a different full script fantranslation posted on Gamefaqs by MNeidengard that might be easier to read.
Really liked this! Nice look at the genre and the history of it in terms of relationships and couples! It’s so story driven so you’re bound to see some love stories!!!

Yuri & Alice (Shadow Hearts) and Joshua & Estelle are my favorite romances by far.
Squall and Rinoa! Alex and Luna! Steiner and Beatrix! Some of my favorites.
Cloud and Tifa's scene under the highwind was pretty obvious. All that was missing was Cloud smoking a cigar.

Can you make a Part 2 about modern RPGS? Classic RPGs are full with good romance storys but in modern RPGs is it extreamly rare.
Totally agree, everytime i see any JRPG romance videos its always on past games and now modern JRPG just doesnt have any good romance stories or even romance subplots in them

My first memory of romance in video games was FFIV. Cecil's goal to stop Baron gets sidetracked to Cecil saving Rosa. He really only returns to his goal of saving the world once she's safe. There is better examples, but theirs stuck with me. Also, "Theme of Love" is still an all time banger of a track.
My personal favorite love story in a JRPG is between Squall and Rinoa in FFVIII. I know the junction system is jank, but I always return for these two.
I also really love the CloudxAerithxTifa triangle, Fei and Elly romance and The closeness between sibling Ramza and Alma which was focused on over a romantic relationship in FFTactics, much like Terra discovered that her "romance" was actually her devotion to the orphans in FFVI.
Oh and lastly I really love the storytelling in Tales of Destiny and the way Stahn and Rutee's feeling deepened as the story progressed.
PlayStation 1 is my favorite generation in all of gaming. Games were more innovative at that time.
None come close to the one in Xenogears, shit was a rollercoaster ride of pain. And Yasunori Mitsuda's tracks only makes your heart bleed more.
Yep it's one of the more maturely handled ones as well. That game is such a masterpiece in general

Although I do wish it was longer, like for every PS2 games you could flesh out a bit about which particular scenes or sub-stories for the couples are your favorites, even for games like Persona 3 & 4 you could state your own opinion which romance route in each game that you like the best. I would be fine if the video is very subjective. Maybe in part 2 of the video? Wish you have more views man!
Thanks a bunch, I appreciate that! Yeah I know I cut the PS2 era quite short in comparison to the others unfortunately. While I would love to make longer videos in the future, as a newer/smaller channel our main focus right now is just to put out as much content as we can to help us grow, and temporarily that means perhaps not spending as long on some topics as I would ideally like until our overall view counts get up. But we will likely make a part 2 in the future so I wanted to leave some room for that as well 👌
Why did you gloss over Lufia 2? Maxim got married MID GAME, then had a kid and saved the world with his wife! I don't think any other JRPG had a fleshed out romance like they did, provided it was more like a romance montage but it was still groundbreaking for a SNES JRPG.
It also had Tia's part of realizing that she couldn't compete with Selan and her unrequited love. The love story was a big part of the game.
Totally agree with this! I also agree that it was kind of glossed over, but this very aspect drove so much of my respect for this game. It makes the ending hit like a(n) (unsuplexable) freight train, and contributes heavily to Lufia 2's place in my top game's list. Now that I think of it, DQV did basically the same thing, and it was I believe an SNES title in Japan. Maybe they inspired each other?
Fire emblem will always be my favorite romance jrpg series, but I do love how the genre has really evolved with romance especially now that these days there are more games with female players in mind, as a woman the typical "save the girl and somehow get hitched" always fell flat. I always liked that the Japanese started gearing more games to female audiences a bit earlier and more often than western games.
My favourite romances:
1. Estelle and Joshua, from Trails in the Sky
2. Luke and Tear, from Tales of the Abyss
3. Welkin and Alicia, from Valkyria Chronicles
Fei the real gangsta of romance. I do think Tifa and Cloud did it as well. And they were caught. Also Aerith and Zack made a better couple. I never thought Aerith was anything to Cloud but a friend.

At the end of Lunar 2 you can hear one of the best if not THE BEST JRPG songs or even in whole industry. If it was just a music it would be worse than Scars of time or Singing Mountain.

The fact it gives you the choice on who you can romance and eventually marry is something I absolutely loved about it. Also this was when they had the system where your party members commented on every event and location around you, so it felt like having a real person and not some souless npc.
Anyways, great catalog of games there. I would love to see you make one with jrpg's that are semi-dating sims-ish? Not sure if there are any
Alm & Celica from Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia would be perfect for this video. From childhood friends to king and queen of a united country, these two care about each other so much and no one can break that bond between them(Jedah tried with his scheme to trick Celica into selling her soul to Duma and use her to kill Alm and he failed horribly thanks to Mila's divine betrayal).

From Phantasy Star IV, right? I recently replayed that and really enjoyed the development of their love, even if it was a bit lightweight for my tastes (though nothing can really compare to Trails' character development; I've been spoiled forever!).
Cloud n Tifa definitely did the deed that night.

Fei and Elly and then Luke and Tear are really great. Delita and Ovelia are probably the most interesting I've seen.
Not a JRPG relationship but Zero and Ciel in Mega Man Zero really did hit home too a lot of the time. Same with Volnutt and Tron although those are just teased and barely anything more.
I'm a sucker for a well written romance in a JRPG.

That will soon be determined, since Zack is no longer dead in remake. All theories about Aerith and Zack shall see a conclusion, one way or the other.

Awesome video you got here, keep up the great work. Hopefully, for your next part of great romance essay video would be longer and in depth lore between two couples that can easily to understand why do they meant for each other and how we, as audience, can react towards those two character on how they feel and how does the story structure can persuade those two characters to have development in time throughout the process on each acts between the story and reach towards the climatic conclusion.
Anyway, what’s your favorite romantic couples throughout Jrpg games the most? My most favorite Jrpg romantic couples are Haru Okumura and Akira Kurusu from persona 5. Because I love how those two couples were meant for each other and I love how Haru and Akira have great chemistry together throughout the third act of the game from school festivals to Valentine’s Day/White’s Day. During and following after Okumura palace arc, her father by the way, I beginning to understand Haru’s perspective of her character develop such as why Haru don’t want to arrange marriage to her fiancée and how she decided to speak up in her own mind and and follow her grandfather footsteps by creating her private cafe; everything about her was really great and I proud 🥲 of that she don’t need any more screen time; she only needed to reach her point in time of her development before climatic ending of the game. No matter how fans were criticizing and mistreated Haru’s character; I really don’t care what they think about her, in my perspective, both Haru and Akira will always be perfect canon couples in persona franchise and it will never gets old, and I will never give up their romantic couples card, ever.

There are some great romances I've seen in video games. Cloud and Aerith, Justin and Feena are always two that comes to mind. Though as a queer person, I'm so tired of always having to deal with straight and cishet love stories. There are some great indie RPGs that have queer love stories, we just need more mainstream games to have them.
I just wish more new rpg games would have romance. EA used to have some of the best romance in their games but now that money is the only thing companies see romance... and story in general kinda just suck now.
Um i just wanna say that the legend of zelda series aren't rpgs well except for zelda 2.
