  • Abadia Retuerto is located in the Sierra de Aracena, a natural park of about 200,000 acres. It is one of Spain's largest protected areas and contains unusual rock formations like the Giant's Chimney. The area is also home to the longest cave system in Europe- the Calatrava Cave. In addition to its natural beauty, the abadía is also surrounded by a garden with fountains, statues and a children's play area.
The area around Abadia Retuert Emoldo is characterized by rocky terrain, streams and pine forests. On top of that are the ruins of the palace itself- including an octagonal tower and a mosque built by Nasrid kings. Abadia Retuerta was also once home to a monastery founded by monks from San Yuste, dating back to 836. The monks farmed in the surrounding forests and raised sheep for wool. Although Abadia Retuerta has preserved much of its original architecture, some modern facilities have been added.
The abadía has a rich history as a Moorish summer palace. In 1174, King Alfonso VIII of Castile took possession of it after defeating the Muslim king of Aragon at Valencina. It became an important Christian stronghold during the Albigensian Crusades because it was located on a trade route between France and Italy. Over time, Abadia Retuerta became one of Spain's most prosperous cities because of its strategic location and thriving wool industry. However, on July 18th 1242 King Ferdinand III decreed that all Jews living in Castile must leave the city. The Jews left Abadia Retuerta soon after his order but returned after being expelled by Napoleon in 1809. During both Muslim and Christian occupations, Abadia Retuerta played an important role in Spain's history.
As one of Spain's most prominent tourism sites, Abadia Retuerta has a lot to offer both visitors and locals alike. It has magnificent architecture from various religious periods as well as natural beauty that can only be found in such an isolated area. A visit to Abadia Retuerta will give you a taste of what life was like during Spain's Moorish period- it is truly one of Europe's hidden gems!
