If you ever have to access the evaporator, might as well clean it too.
Coil cleaner is cheap, use it on your homes system as well.

Whenever I've bought an old beater with a heater, I just assumed the air conditioning wouldn't work, and I was too afraid of it (or too broke) to try and fix it. How many of those cars could have had working A/C if I had only purged and refilled the system.

The entire system is pretty basic.
Pressure switch and compressor. Newer cars are a little squirrelly with the computer but still just a pressure switch and a compressor.
