- I rebuilt the carb on this motor. It had sat unused for about 10 years. Its the WMC 53A off a 1999 Mercury 2 stroke. This video disassembles the carb. Part 2 is a quick reassembly.

anybody out there ever actually ever able to go boating?...or is everyone just fucking with their motors endlessly while they watch countless beautiful days go by
I'm about to jump into this myself my friend so I really appreciate you helping out. After I had a stroke I can't remember anything
Read here! The new kits have different gaskets. Make sure the gasket between the carb and block has the fuel pump vacuum hole
Gracias por tu vídeo, estoy intentando conseguir la llave extractora de la cola de ese mismo motor y no la encuentro por ningún lado y muchos mecánicos ni siquiera tienen esa llave. ¿Puedes ayudarme a saber dónde puedo conseguir esa clave?
I don’t fully understand. What part are you looking for?
@@sirmarcusandrewhola, no puedo sacar la parte de los porta retenes porque no tengo la llave y la otra zona donde está la hélice después de sacar la hélice
I have the same motor but with electric start. I can start the engine. But the engine bogs out and stalls after I press the accelerator. Any tips , ideas what the issue might be ?
Dit this carburator well run well and give a little more power on a 20 hpm same brand and model? Thanks....
Need feedback on correct float orentation , being told flat side of the float "with no ridge" must go aganst the float forks , but in your example as you disembled it came out ridged side orentated against the float lever , did someone reassemble it incorrectly in the past or am I being misinformed ?
Yeah there is a correction video where I made adjustments. It’s linked in the video or on my channel.
Yep ridge goes upwards, against the fork.
sirmarcusandrew thanks for this video! I'm from Brazil and Suzuki and Yamaha are very strong brands in the market, but I really love mercury products. It is really hard to find some replacement parts here and your video help me to save a lot of money keeping my outboard away from bad mechanics. My outboard is the same as yours, but without the starter kit. Can I say my carburetor is the wmc 53a?
I am not an expert, but I think depending on year that they used a couple different carburetors. Mine was stamped with the model number on the side of the carburetor. Thanks for the comments!
@@sirmarcusandrew Thank you man! I'll check it on mine when I service that! And once more, thanks for this big service to all outboard owners community! With the lack of service material on the internet, this is a huge help!
I have fule coming out of that small hole for choke..what could it be?grate video btw!thank you
If it’s the small hole on the right side of assembly next to primer, I had a similar problem. My primer had degraded inside leaving only mesh and the trash blocked the fuel from entering carb and instead pushed fuel out of small hole towards starter. I believe the hole actually is to allow air back into the primer to release suction. You can buy a kit that replaces only that part or a complete carb rebuild kit.
@@sirmarcusandrew I did the rebuild kit and it still happens idk why it's still doing it
@@sirmarcusandrew I did find that the air/fule mixture screw is completely missing.might be another issue!!😂
Would you have pic and size of mixture screw?
@@sirmarcusandrew I got a new kit and the mixture screw won't go in..did you use you new one?
@6:35 that little ball you mentioned, my carb is missing that ball when I took it apart, would that cause low end performance issues? Sluggish, feels like a misfire until you get to high RPM's where it works fine.
Yea mate we has the exact same problem got the ball and goes like brand new but now have differnt problems🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@rdubtelly8651Where did you get the ball from, do you have a link?
This was so helpful, but I am a little confused at 7:58. What is in the center of the carb as you are lifting the float lever. I imagine this is the main jet, but every video I see they seem to back this out with a screwdriver to clean it. In this case, I don't see how you would remove this for cleaning?
The main jet in this particular carb is inside of the bolt/screw you used to remove the bowl. I don't think you can fully separate it. Mercury sells a replacement bolt/screw with the jet... you get normal or high altitude. You can kind of see the screw inside the bolt at 7:32 if you pause it. I was able to loosen it but it would not come all of the way out. I flushed it and reinstalled it. The kit I used did not include a new one.
When you adjust that idle screw adjustment,,, is it tighten or loosen to bring up the idle speed???
The screw in the front adjusts mixture. The screw on the side that moves when you advance the throttle, adjusts the idle.
@@sirmarcusandrew thanks for the reply
I have a 1992 Mercury Mariner 15 horsepower. It looks identical to yours. did they have the same bore and stroke only difference being the carburetor and intake?
This I am not sure of.
Warning..... there is a small ball bearing on the Spring. Be careful because you will easily lose it then your motor will flood everytime you tilt it.. you "cannot" find a oem replacement carburetor for this beast of a motor. If you blow your motor up the carb will sell for a easy $400 by itself.. I've had like six people try to buy my carb...
I bought a used motor. It started and ran perfectly during the check, but under load, the RPMs would fluctuate and the engine would stall. I disassembled the carburetor and found that the ball on the spring was missing. I went to a bearing shop and found a ball with the right diameter - it cost 7 cents. Now everything works great!
thanks man that was very thorough and helpful
How do you put retaining ring back in primer bulb
I used the old air/fuel mixture brass rod to push the old out and new in. I talk about it in the second video where i show putting it back together. ua-cam.com/video/Tq1tBGjI8Ts/v-deo.html
The rod you point to at the :42 second mark. What is that rods purpose? I bought a motor from a guy and trying to get it going. It doesn’t have that rod but has the connection. It ran before it sat
It’s apart of pull to prime system to advance throttle slightly. See my other video about “ pull to prime explanation “
That’s part of my problem. This motor is missing the rod. Not gonna help me cold start it after 2 years lol I’ll look at the other video but any idea on a part number for that if it’s not on the other video?
Advancing the throttle slightly does the same thing (at least on mine). Watch the arm on the starboard side of the engine move as you advance the throttle. For part numbers go here:
www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/parts-and-accessories/parts-catalog
Then launch the parts catalog and put in the serial number (you can also browse by basic engine type to get pretty close) if you don’t have the serial number. Possible part number is “127332 wire fast idle”
sirmarcusandrew awesome video so helpful I’ve been working on my 1999 Mercury 25 hp 2 stroke...finally got it running but I can’t see where to set the wire fast idle under the fly wheel, does it go through the rectangular hole in the fast idle lever or does it go somewhere else? It keeps failing off the where it sits on the choke...
Through the rectangular hole.
9:24 red washer and retainer clip, how did you get it back in?
I used the old idle air screw to push it out and back in. Since I had a new one, I wasn’t worried about the tip possibly being damaged.
@@sirmarcusandrew I got the gasket in and out with no problem but the C clip was a tough one, finally got it back in, Mercury runs like new
I used an allen key of suitable size to press fit the c-clamp which holds the rubber o-ring. I figured that out after wasting a lot of time with pliers. The press fit solution was so simple and I was happy it worked.
I cannot get my old one out
What purpose does that cover serve you remove at 6:50 ? Mine is gone.
Are you sure 6:50? I remove a metal ball inside the primer that’s on the top side of the spring.
@@sirmarcusandrew 3:20 sorry
I’ll have to double check when I get back to the boat. I’m pretty sure it’s a “screen” for large debris to prevent it entering the carb. I can’t recall if any of the primer assembly is attached to it or not.
How do u get that long brass rod out of the center of the carb ?
Right!!mine bottomed out..thats the only part I needed but I had to get the hole kit
I didn’t remove it. I flushed it with carb cleaner. I made sure I didn’t have any blockages.
Mine appeared to be jammed in there. The shaft and the tube were not concentric. The shaft was at an angle so it did not feel like it was going to move. Did you find the same thing?
where did you get carb rebuild kit
Craig Cooper I ordered mine on www.amazon.com They offer OEM and aftermarket kits. I used Mercury’s website to find my part number based on serial number. They have complete kits or kits for the primer bulb and more area specific. This kit did not include a new jet. It has a separate part number.
I'm seasick from wathing this. But hey, I know what I'm in for with my used boat that I just bought now. Get someone to hold the camera bud.
one single word : Tripod !
Shut up, tripod isn't going to help, only a head cam will, so anything he looked at, so would we, but if you are that impatient, go make a tripod video yourself and post it and criticise yourself, one single word, "ungreatful"
@@dougydoolittle5255 Capt Larry I thought it was nice cause the rest are on a tripod and they aren't as close up and technical
