Of course, this show is better known for the versions in the 1970's and '80s hosted by the late Geoff Edwards.

We had similar TV-game here in Finland in 60’s ”Laatikkoleikki” (Box Game)There were large cardboard boxes and the competitor was able to choose one. There were both good items and junkish, and SWATTER was the most bottom one. The main prize was a good one like a TV set. The host then tried to buy the box back by offering 100 FIM (from 1963 1 FIM) which was the smallest paper money. Then he added more and more asking money or box. Usually the contestant choosed the box. The swatter was sure laughter warranty.

Announcer is Bob Williams and music by Milton Delugg on accordion. Milt wrote the theme for the 1981 version of the show, which was also produced by original producer Budd Granoff.

Deal or No Deal and Let's Make a Deal both must have drawn inspiration from this show.

This was the first game show to offer a contestant a choice between a guaranteed cash prize and an unknown.

I wonder if this version of TH had balloons when the money was found like the 70s version.

WOW! I remember Treasure Hunt! Jan did his banter with the guests like Groucho did with You Bet Your Life!

Burt Reynolds mentioned this on Letterman. He said people just wanted to see Pirate Girl (he called her Treasure Girl).

The envelope-versus-chest part of this show reminds me of a popular, long-running Quebec game show called "La Poule aux oeufs d'or (The Hen With the Golden Eggs)." But all the prizes are cash.

It took 7:38 before the first question was asked.Talk about the producers saving a lot of prize money with all that chatter! This was a practice of a few other game shows.Yak,Yak,Yak,go to the bank.Yak,Yak,Yak,go to the bank.

The show was mostly a vehicle for Jan Murray to do his schtick. When he was off, they had Buddy Hackett as the host doing the same thing.

Massive packing issues. Now I know where Fremantle got that idea for Brady's LMaD.

my great grandfather would mail in weekly postcards to try to win a treasure box....years later it turned out the show was fixed

You sure about the fixing? I know that several game shows and quiz shows from that era were fixed but I don't recall Treasure Hunt being one of them. In 1962 I got to caddy in a foursome that included Jan Murray and Buddy Hackett, Vernon Hills Country Club, Eastchester, New York. Those guys together were funny as hell.

@@texman8150 The story is that when Jan Murray, who created and owned the show, learned that some of his staffers may have engaged in questionable activities, he requested the network end the program.
