Dear Maggie, thank you for posting these lovely Canto Classics on UA-cam. They are great to help to revive my Cantonese roots. Listing the tunes with names and timings greatly improves the listening pleasure.
I think a common problem of Chinese music musician is their lack of knowledge in chord theory. Although at least 3 kinds of music instruments were used in this record, they all play the same things, same melody, except some fill-in.
@Poor man That's the way Cantonese music is. It's impractical, sometimes even impossible to put chords into the music because there's no concept of chords when these pieces were written.
@@oscarchong9698 But I don't think so. It is possible to written at least one more line of melody to play along side by side with the main melody in harmony. Chord theory is a good tool to help us to write the other line of melody and base line, to make it sound richer and more interesting. BTW., I don't mean to strum chord to support the main melody like playing western pop music.
@@poorman3134 I know what you mean,I'm into Classical music as well.If we apply what you've mentioned above onto Cantonese music,we can't call it Cantonese music any more.Authentic Cantonese music is exactly what you've described in your first comment - All instruments except percussions playing the same melody line most of the time.At times some instruments may play fill-in melodies or solo.I've never come across any Cantonese pieces that have two different melody lines going at the same time.
@@oscarchong9698 Good to know that you study classic music. I don't think Cantonese music must be constraint to has only one melody line. It is only because very few Cantonese musician know how to do it, or even don't know there is such a new idea that could be introduced into their music. Or because they are lazy. Anyway, I would suggest these Cantonese musician to select one instrument to play rhythm(not necessary as strumming a guitar, but like playing a double bass). This is simple but, I think, could make the song much more interesting.
