- Joanna Sternberg is an artist and musician from Manhattan, NY. With a background in jazz and tons of experience on a wide range of instruments, their own music uses folk composition to tell brutally honest stories through song, with a sadness and honesty aimed at perhaps - hopefully - helping the listener to deal with their own personal challenges. We joined Joanna at home, in rehearsal, at Serious Business Music, and at a show alongside their dad at Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn for this intimate look at a fascinating songwriter and creative individual at a crucial point in their career - just ahead of the release of their debut album, their first national tour, and their 28th birthday.

It’s rare, that somebody, so unique, real, and cool, gets discovered in the endless ocean that is the Internet. your music is entertaining, but also comforting. It’s something we all need these days.
Have you ever thought about voice acting? You would be amazing as a voice for an animated character. An animated series with your drawing style would be so cool. I could listen to you talk all day. You are a special person. Your honesty and wholesomeness make me feel better about the world.

I really resonated with what you had to say about what is and isn’t art, this is a musing I have constantly.
Mine is more centered around who is and isn’t considered an artist or a creative. In my opinion, the bar is too high for entry into some creative spaces. So I really loved hearing you say you learned to draw by watching cartoons and you don’t need to know how to draw to make art. We are all of us creative, and art is for everyone 💙

"Then I try some more" was released shortly after a good friend of mine lost their life to suicide. Your album helped me through the grieving process so much, although every time I listen to songs from the album I'm reminded of that time I still listen to it often and find joy in all the songs. I've never connected to a piece of media so much and I'm eternally grateful for your artistry, thank you so much Joanna x
