I've had one of these for a couple of years. Used it MANY TIMES and in ALL kinds of weather, and I can tell you without hesitation that it is the MOST AWESOME sleeping bag and/or sleep system ever invested in. If I had to choose between all the other sleeping bags, tents or the Outdoor Products bivy I own and this sleep system, I'd go w/this sleep system every time! Best money I ever spent on all my outdoor backpacking gear!
I've had the black stuff sack version and the foliage green stuff sack version issued to me in the army. Only differences are the colors of the heavier bag and bivy sack and one more small stuff sack. These sleep systems are 100% AWESOME. One of the few pieces of gear that the army got right. Used them all the time overseas in Iraq and on many field problems. Most of the time I just used my poncho liner (which I still have) because it was such a hassle to get this shit out of the MSS carrier on both the old woodland molle rucksack and the newer ACU ruck. Sucks even more when you're in a hurry and have to stuff it all back in the sleep carrier. Anyway, put all three together and yes they are warm. Just remember to use a sleeping mat to put something between you and the ground because if you don't, you're going to remain cold anyway rendering sleep system useless. The ACU one is good because of the extra stuff sack for patrols or summer camping and you don't feel like bringing all 3 bags. You can still fit the patrol bag and bivy sack in the small stuff sack. This system along with a military issued poncho for additional shelter are good to have in your kit.
USMC here have had a ton of experience with these sleep systems. I own one and use it all weather. No tent needed. Add the neoprene mat and you can own the wild.
Thinner green bag is the patrol bag, while heavier black is the intermediate bag. The bivy is made to "shed" water. Also get a sleep hood that goes with the system. I've never heard of an XL version.
Scout, I am curious about your thoughts on the Nat Geo movie.. American Blackout. I have been thinking that I'm not prepared enough and your videos are very helpful. Keep em coming
Market is flooded with them .Make sure you buy the newer version. Its a lot better .Easy way to tell is the camo pattern .It looks more grey than green !
I'm honestly not sure. Try ebay which is where I bought mine. I've never actually seen an XL version personally but I'm sure that the "tall" version probably exists.
