"big decision" was one of the best singles of the underrated 80s ( can't have been that bad if you had : the smiths, early REM at their peak, husker du, echo and the bunnymen, gang of four for starters)...that petrol emotion were terribly underrated and who songs would piss all over most so called "punk popsters" today
One of the first and still one of the best bands I saw live. Even did my first stage dive at one of the gigs. These two tracks were guaranteed to get the crowd going.... oh the bruises I suffered!!
Fantastic band....Stevie Mack is one of the best and most natural front-persons I've ever seen (he's looking a bit camp here!) and the O'Neil brothers on guitar and bass. Heaven!
It's Damian O'Neill's bass. I never realised this. Saw TPE more often than I saw Undertones, and could never work out why there was that extra dancy quality. MUCH as I adore and revere Mickey Bradley, there's something about guitarist turned bassist that hits the actual spot.
Saw them live at University in 1990. This brings back memories - just brilliant energy and two great songs - had they sung Scumsurfin it would have been a perfect trifecta! (okay, it wasn't released for another 3 years, but still...) Should have been much bigger - far more memorable than 90% of Britpop offerings that came after them.
Great watching people just enjoy the music instead of half-ass filming with their iPhones and thinking "well maybe when I watch it next month I will like it."
That Petrol emotion, sublime anthems in my youth, bought end of the millennium blues after my inter cert results, they were fooking awesome and so underatted in their time, criminal
Great! Nice to catch up on a miss-spent youth & reminisce loved the End of the Millennium Psychosis Blues album, & The Tube was THE best music program ever!
Had this EXACT clip recorded on video tape from 1987 - well, must have been my brother that taped it!.I searched for these songs, that I only know from having that tape - can't believe I found the actual show!!! THANK YOU!!!
I saw that petrol emotion at least 4 times in Brighton in 85/86 also their first concert in England was at our garden party at the art college so saw them in the afternoon and probably at the Escape in the evening !!!
great band! ..... I remember popping into a record shop in Camden (London) and chatting with Steve Mack, who was working behind the counter.....then later saw TPE live....I think he was wearing a ski suit or something. Big Decision & Genius Move...2 of my very favourite 80's tracks....
Underrated band moving forward after the Undertones but with their own fresh sound in the eighties alternative to new romo stuff with cutting edge and punk roots.
Ooooooo I am só glad to hear and see them again🥳🥳🥳 In Holland they were not that big but I think I heard John Peel talking about them🤔 John had once a week a little bit of radio time in the ‘80s👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
yep the o'neil bros from undertones but also two other irsh guys ciaran mcloughlin and raymond o gearmain (both great songwriters) AND STEVE american and all the better for it the antithesis to the english disaffected frontman, so many elements make this band more relevant today than the time they were around.
Yes! I wasn't even alive then but there's a bootleg of the Pumpkins on some radio station (it was the first sort of live on the radio thing they did, so it's a fairly significant one) where Billy mentions they're going to be opening for That Petrol Emotion, which I thought was kinda mad, because I always thought of them as some little known Irish band (those who know of them over here are few and far between).
I don't have the details to hand and my memiry isn't all it should be but I do remember that at least 2 of the band members are from Derry. That Petrol Emotion came about after the Undertones split and 2 of the 'Tones became Petrols. I'll see if I can find my old vinyl with the info.
They should quit after the incredible A side of their first album.. I mean, everything that came after was totally superfluous but Manic Pop Thrill remains one of the best 80s album ever
Wow!... They're actually dancing! They should've been much more successful. This is great! If you're into this i think the Album , their 2nd , is called BABBLE. Their first album MANIC POP THRILL is the Bee's nuts. A seriously underrated band imho. The true essence of 80'' Indie , before 'Indie' was hijacked by the corpsorations. Yes they signed to Virgin but not before making Manic PT (can't remember if BABBLE was on Virgin or not) and V2....CORKERS!!!⛄🐖🥞
A really great band but how ironic that the boys that were in the Undertones criticized Stiff little fingers for exploiting the troubles for them in That petrol emotion do exactly what they criticized SLF for doing.
Is that right ? Didn't know that. Fly The Flag is a bit strong though , pretty divisive and not very punk , like the insincere Clash they where a huge Corporate affair. EMI. What exactly did TPE say about SLF ?(if you can be arsed). Sorry , What did the Undertones and TPE members say?
+Soul Sisters By the looks of it The Tube 1986/87 (note Jools Holland!) - Channel 4 should actually push out a dvd of top tube moments like the beeb did with the old grey whistle test .. I reckon it would do reasonably OK...
So, this is fantastically shit. Edited to say that it isn't, actually. I have discovered their first album and it's great. This stuff I'm not quite as in to, but we'll see. Who cares? I don't know. Nobody
That Petrol Emotion were undoubtedly one of the best 80s indie bands. Manic Pop Thrill and Babble are strong albums.
Manic Pop Thrill strong LP. as you say....
Major label tho
U2 had this same vibe in the beginning, before they sold out. These guys never lost that sound and it's why I will always be a fan.
My best friend died in 2016, this was one of her favourites.
Ive o ly recently discovered the petrols...my 64 yr old body and 18 yr old mind are flipping
One of the first and still one of the best bands I saw live. Even did my first stage dive at one of the gigs. These two tracks were guaranteed to get the crowd going.... oh the bruises I suffered!!
I'd like to make a request for everyone with full episodes of THE TUBE to get them uploaded onto YT... PLEASE!🙏🙏🙏
God I miss these days.....this band was great
This lot were absolutely diamond live.
This band was so good. I'm a huge fan of End of The Millenium Psychosis Blues. Honestly, one of the best albums ever.
This is fabulous in every way
Fantastic band....Stevie Mack is one of the best and most natural front-persons I've ever seen (he's looking a bit camp here!) and the O'Neil brothers on guitar and bass.
Heaven!
Looking back he seems VERY camp here. Didn't think of it back in 1987 because I was too busy jumping up and down to TPE. Quality.
@@15ofni9e I remember thinking he was camp 🏕 😂 actually but who cares, great 👍 sound and band 😀 😉
Love it, eyeliner and all! The proverbial 'row of tents' came to my mind too.
I saw them once or twice in the 80s - their set was powerful & fun.
Camp my style!
@@127cmore did you not catch the Golden Horde live😂
The cat's knackers, incredible!
That Petrol Emotion ruled!
+Mark Richardson From Derry, with an American vocalist.
The Petrol's ROCKED! One of the best live bands of the period!
Shit.
It's Damian O'Neill's bass. I never realised this. Saw TPE more often than I saw Undertones, and could never work out why there was that extra dancy quality. MUCH as I adore and revere Mickey Bradley, there's something about guitarist turned bassist that hits the actual spot.
yep defo
it started with TWO Undertones then Damian stayed on (sorry time flies)
Saw them live at University in 1990. This brings back memories - just brilliant energy and two great songs - had they sung Scumsurfin it would have been a perfect trifecta! (okay, it wasn't released for another 3 years, but still...) Should have been much bigger - far more memorable than 90% of Britpop offerings that came after them.
The most generous band it has been my privilege to see live.
You pretentious prick.
Your a fucking lemon for posting that.great band susie i agree 👍
Great watching people just enjoy the music instead of half-ass filming with their iPhones and thinking "well maybe when I watch it next month I will like it."
That Petrol emotion, sublime anthems in my youth, bought end of the millennium blues after my inter cert results, they were fooking awesome and so underatted in their time, criminal
Still got this on a video of mine and I love it!!
We'll do a big decision, great songs
Great! Nice to catch up on a miss-spent youth & reminisce loved the End of the Millennium Psychosis Blues album, & The Tube was THE best music program ever!
Saw them in the Sir George Robey in 85-86. Picked up Manic Pop Thrill on green vinyl from a record shop in Athens, Greece in 93.
Graham Ford second best after Fugazo
Oh, the Robey!
Fucking Hell! that brings back memories..
Just a fantastic Band , brilliant Live ...
Had this EXACT clip recorded on video tape from 1987 - well, must have been my brother that taped it!.I searched for these songs, that I only know from having that tape - can't believe I found the actual show!!! THANK YOU!!!
Best live band of late 80s and early 90s!,
used to do this in a band i was in at liverpool uni back in 1988-8
saw this band that same year... brilliant days!
I saw that petrol emotion at least 4 times in Brighton in 85/86 also their first concert in England was at our garden party at the art college so saw them in the afternoon and probably at the Escape in the evening !!!
That is one helluva riff! Love it!
The Petrols were a cracking band. Cool video
great band! ..... I remember popping into a record shop in Camden (London) and chatting with Steve Mack, who was working behind the counter.....then later saw TPE live....I think he was wearing a ski suit or something. Big Decision & Genius Move...2 of my very favourite 80's tracks....
Up Derry!
Underrated band moving forward after the Undertones but with their own fresh sound in the eighties alternative to new romo stuff with cutting edge and punk roots.
Just another Saturday night at the Trash in Guelph Ontario back in the day. Many big decisions at about quarter to one in the morning!
They were just immense
Thanks for the call candy
Ooooooo I am só glad to hear and see them again🥳🥳🥳 In Holland they were not that big but I think I heard John Peel talking about them🤔 John had once a week a little bit of radio time in the ‘80s👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
They did a session or 2 for the John peel show
yep the o'neil bros from undertones but also two other irsh guys ciaran mcloughlin and raymond o gearmain (both great songwriters)
AND STEVE american and all the better for it the antithesis to the english disaffected frontman, so many elements make this band more relevant today than the time they were around.
A Great Song
love this!!!
I remember when Smashing Pumpkins opened for these guys in late 80s at Cabaret Metro in Chicago.
These guys are good.
I remember seeing That Petrol Emotion at Cabaret Metro too! I don't remember who opened...was it really Smashing Pumpkins?! Wow....
That's insanely cool! Kudos. 👏👏👏
They've reformed and are playing at Electric Picnic 08!
EXCELENT!
Banda muito boa que só conheci agora, ouvi o album babble no spotify!
YAY!! Playing NYC Dec 12th...
great video
SOOOOOO GOOD
West coast Seattle boy
Playing on the public saxophone . . .
Livelier than Pearl Jam, lol. Loved TPE since Rolling Stone magazine charts and college radio play 1988.
Creeping to the Cross - absolute blinder.
One of my fav mostly under rated LPs!
Yay
Thanks for the post
I just bought this used lp for 50 cents because it was a polygram record and the cover was kind of cool.
good song,,
fuckin amazing, this band are the greatest lost band they're the missing link in musical history!!
I don't have the details to hand and my memiry isn't all it should be but I do remember that at least 2 of the band members are from Derry. That Petrol Emotion came about after the Undertones split and 2 of the 'Tones became Petrols. I'll see if I can find my old vinyl with the info.
I remember you Rose Goveia.😁😁
i saw them at liv uni too about the same time
cool!
It was the O'Neil brothers, Sean and Damian who came from the Undertones.
They should quit after the incredible A side of their first album..
I mean, everything that came after was totally superfluous but Manic Pop Thrill remains one of the best 80s album ever
Yes MPT is a classic corker!!!
Now touring again :)
Come on...This is pop music!
What! 1 dislike? What is this person on?
Wow!... They're actually dancing! They should've been much more successful. This is great! If you're into this i think the Album , their 2nd , is called BABBLE.

Yes they signed to Virgin but not before making Manic PT (can't remember if BABBLE was on Virgin or not) and V2....CORKERS!!!⛄🐖🥞
que bueno el directo eh!!
@ybrik222 Yeah, they had a bunch of used lps 2 for a buck. Many of them were extremely common or in bad shape. Can't really go wrong for 50 cents!
Not educating, agitating and organising is what we've been doing wrong in the UK since Blair.
OH YEAH...THAT'S THE STUFF........
Agitate, Educate, Organise!
Way ahead of the curv Britpop
were you at the uni or something or just happen to live in Liverpool?
eso para el que diga que en los 80 solo había pachanga!!!! anda yaaaaaaaaaaa
Agitate, Educate, Organise
@nmcclure79
You can't go wrong for fifty cents unless you pay fifty cents to have your eyes removed. That would suck.
Where was this- and when.?
+Soul Sisters By the looks of it The Tube 1986/87 (note Jools Holland!) - Channel 4 should actually push out a dvd of top tube moments like the beeb did with the old grey whistle test .. I reckon it would do reasonably OK...
+Kross Fader It was , remember it well
@feardhorcha . yeah along with Diesel Park West ..
Took about 5 minutes, but I know who that singer looks like...Liza Minnelli!
Pretty cool band, catchy tunes.
Ex Undertones and a skinny singer making a racket!!!!!
@cavanalan Anything is better on VHS.
@nmcclure79
Damn; 50 cents?
Amazing drum sounds considering the sticks never hit the skins!
So, this is fantastically shit.
Edited to say that it isn't, actually. I have discovered their first album and it's great. This stuff I'm not quite as in to, but we'll see. Who cares? I don't know. Nobody
Educate agitate and organise
BRITANNIA MUSIC RULES OK
Absolutely effing awful. Worst band I've heard in years, and I've heard thousands.
You no like Ian? TPE were a great band and this is superb! Live music!
Lame, not even vaguely amusing.
Yes, you are.
Steve Mack you make my loins ache!
This is not lip syncing!
