- Extraite de l'album Sign Of The Times cette chanson était sortie en 45 T dans presque toute l'Europe mais pas en France.
Sans doute impensable pour le public français qu'un hit des Rubettes ne soit pas chanté par Alan mais par Tony, le guitariste ... qui d'ailleurs quitta le groupe plus tard, bien après Bill, qui avait lui aussi chanté plusieurs morceaux en lead sur les premiers albums. Tous les musiciens des Rubettes étaient chanteurs, mais Alan a toujours voulu garder le leadership !
Après avoir quitté les Rubettes Tony fit une carrière de guitariste de blues dans les clubs londoniens, (on le voit sur UA-cam) pour faire oublier aux puristes le côté variété des Rubettes il changea de nom et pris celui de sa mère, ainsi les bluesmen londoniens ne se doutent de rien ! (Bon c'est moins grave que s'il avait été dans Village People, non ?!). Les Rubettes tournent toujours, avec Alan, Mick "le fidèle", John qui parti en Inde et devenu Hare Krishna fut récupéré il y environ 15 ans par Alan sous la condition de pouvoir placer un peu de danse indouiste dans les Rubettes car Alan a toujours su que John était le 2ième membre le plus populaire et apprécié de la gente féminine juste après lui, et le nouveau, Mark qui remplace Bill. Alan est un "tueur" en fait ;-) Il est allé en justice contre Bill et Paul Da Vinci (le Mystérieux chanteur de Sugar Baby Love et de la voix aigue (falsetto) de Tonight sur les enregistrements originaux) pour garder le nom Rubettes car ils avaient reformé un autre Rubettes de leur côté avec le batteur de Doctor Feelgood qui a également été le batteur des Rubettes pendant plusieurs années après le départ de John mais, personne n'a ni gagné ni perdu car aucun des 2 groupes qui existent toujours n'a le droit de s'appeler les Rubettes tout court, simplement la justice a dit que le groupe d'Alan devait s'appeler les Rubettes featuring Alan et l'autre groupe les Rubettes featuring Bill !!
Alan a une propriété en France et a fait 2 albums solo. Reconnaissons lui les qualités d'être un bon chanteur même si je préférais Paul (ah, cette voix incroyable de falsetto sur Tonight et SugarBaby Love !). Alan sait aussi faire les voix de falsetto puisque qu'il les fait depuis presque 40 ans en concert mais il a une coloration plus efféminée (comme dans Juke Box Jive , Julia, Ooh la la etc...) classique pour ce type de voix dont est dépourvue la voix de Paul Da Vinci sur SBL et Tonight. Paul avait enregistré un hit en même temps que Tonight sous son nom, "Your Baby Ain't Your Baby Anymore", très sympa, ressemblant beaucoup à SBL mais moins bien produit car chez les Rubettes le son a toujours été TRES bien produit . Cela venait des membres eux même et aussi du fait qu'un de leurs producteurs initiaux avait travaillé avec les Beatles.
Si vous écoutez un bluesman dans un club anglais pensez que c'est peut être Tony Thorpe le guitariste des 7 premiers albums des Rubettes et chanteur sur cette vidéo ! Il enseigne aussi actuellement l'histoire de la musique et la guitare au Blackburn College.
Le groupe de Bill a sorti un nouveau CD l'an dernier dans le plus pur style Rubettes mais Paul n'y est plus et est remplacé par un nouveau chanteur !
Paul restera toujours un mystère !
En attendant flashback en 1976 et écoutez une des rares apparitions des Rubettes featuring Tony en lead vocals ! A noter pour les fans : c'est une version alternative à celle du disque, le son de la guitare et son mixage sont très différents, plus medium, plus en avant et plus de notes audibles coupées dans le mix d'origine.

Sugar Baby Love might have been a number 1 but You're The Reason Why is their best song, imo.
When I was a kid I heard this and have been a fan since. My classmates preferred Smokie and Status Quo but this was music to me.
Je les aie vu en concert a l'Olympia en 74 ou 75 c'était l'hystérie Totale dans la salle on n'entendait presque pas la musique ! on s'est bien défoulé ce concert là !!!
Mon tout premier disque, "sugar baby love" offert pour une fête (anniv ou noel, je ne sais plus...), j'étais plutôt jeune là, mais ça m'a marqué au fer rouge ce disque.
Je les ai tous fait par la suite... Je regrette bien que l'on ne présente que les tubes diffusés sur les radios à l'époque, parce qu'il y a de ces perles sur ces albums !!!!
En tout cas, c'est flashback dans les oreilles ce soir !!!

They were. They were an early boy band and boy bands struggle to mature. I think these guys did.

@Ishiku : Il en joue toujours puisque les Rubettes continuent de tourner dans toute l'Europe en 2011. Il existe même depuis 2000 2 groupes Rubettes l'un mené par Alan et l'autre mené par Bill (clavier original)).
Les Rubettes de Bill viennent de sortir un CD "21st Century Rock 'n' Roll" disponible via Internet dans lequel Paul Da Vinci (chanteur de Sugar Baby Love sur le disque) a co écrit 3 chansons. Un titre de ce CD a aussi été écrit par Tony le guitariste chanteur sur cette vidéo ;-).

Je te conseille l'album 2010 "21st Century Rock 'n' Roll" des Rubettes de Bill, il est très bien, il y a des chansons écrites par Paul le chanteur de Sugar Baby Love/ You Could Have Told Me/voix aigüe de Tonight, et Tony. Indispensable également la réédition 2010 de Wear It's 'At avec enfin sur CD les mixages originaux non coupés à la fin, qui contient en plus You Could Have Told Me et surtout l'inédit en CD Silent Movie Queen chanté par John.
@valeriepascale14 Tu dois trouver les albums d'Alan facilement sur le net, particulièrement sur ses sites commerciaux, et peut-être même en torrents, perso je n'ai que Telephone Ring en 33T et je trouve que les autres membres manquent, pareil pour les albums de Tony, John etc... que je n'ai pas non plus. J'aime le côté punchy et rock ainsi que les choeurs et on ne trouve pas cela dans les albums solo.

Si j'ai peut-être fait allusion au caractère un peu dur d'Alan (que j'adore je te rassure) ce n'est pas lui faire injure, il est bien connu qu'il a cassé la gueule à Dave en 1974 dans un studio d'Europe 1car il chantait aussi Sugar Baby Love !

Yes, he sings the lead vocals in several songs from the first 8 albums, Rock'n'Roll Survival, Dance to the Rock'n'Roll, Sign of the Times, Top of the World, Does it got to be Rock'n' Roll, etc. Don't you recognize his "rocker" voice ?!

Il n'y a pas de lien, Tony chantait depuis le 1er album, Rock and Roll Survival, Rumours, Dance To The Rock n' Roll, Put a Back Beat To that Music, Play The Game, Sign of the Times... d'ailleurs ils ont toujours tous chanté sur tous les albums depuis le début à part Pete, Bill chantait The Way of Love, Teenage Dream, Out In the Cold etc, John Rock is Dead, Sha na na na Song, Rock and Roll Lady etc. Mick I'll Always Love You... Et Paul bien sûr Sugar Baby Love et You Could Have Told me.

He never was in the group ! He only recorded Sugar Baby Love and You Could have Told Me before the band was formed.
