Wonderful work as ever lads - always a pleasure to watch
Thank you Colin :)
Another good one Steve, good to see how these repairs are put together. Enjoyed seeing a brief cameo of mine in the background at one point too 😆
It did make a quick appearance 😁👍
Great video. Really enjoy watching them. Keep up the great work.
Thank you Jonathan.
Hi 👋🏻 buddy. Really enjoy watching your repair videos 👍🏻
Thank you stevie :)
Great work as always Steve keep it up 👍 👍
Thank you as always Lee :)
Very good you gave me the inspiration to do mine. Thanks
fantastic David, thats what YCR is all about :)
I'm interested to hear your thoughts about the repair on the inner wheelarch lip? When you cut the grotty inner off, did you bond the outer panel back to the cut back inner without rebuilding the lip of the inner arch? Fascinating stuff, keep going! By far the best south yorks mazda specialist channel out there :)
yes I thought exactly the same! does it not matter if the inner wheel arch lip is now missing? Would it cause corrosion to the inner wheel arch later on as there is now an additional area for moisture to build up?
Hopefully it doesn't matter at all to save me a heap of time in my next wheel arch rebuild ;)
The double skin lip is the reason why the lip corrodes, hence why we remove it.
The inner and outer are bonded together so the water can't get in there and as there is a single galvanised lip that's heavily two pack zink primed then gravitexed over then Waxoiled so it dosnt corrode.
Would really like to see how you do spot welds with the mig if you get the chance.
We are planing on a welding video in the future :)
Look forward to it.
Replacing the arches, do you recommend this overlapping method before others? If longevity is concerned, what gives the best result?
Best results are butt welding is best but usually reserved for people with a lot of welding experience, at YCR we show people.gow to do it themselves and the skill involved in butt welding is beyond most people, lap welding is much easier and if treated correctly with Waxoil etc then there shouldn't be any problems :)
Definitely not that way
Quality work again. Is there a difference between the brush on primer and an aerosol?
The brush on primer leaves a thicker layer so some say it protects better, we have never seen any problems with either but we like to show there is more than one way of doing something :)
It is so easy when i look
So refreshing to see a UK channel. Great job .
Thank you.
high quality workmanship for sure. please wear a mask as dust from paint/steer/bondo/etc can't be very good for you lung.
I sometimes forget :)
2pac zinc primer on inner panels is great for longevity!
thank you for your advice :)
What is the reason for the first run of filler being a fiberglass paste and the second run of filler being a real filler? Another great tutorial thanks again!
Hi Eddie
The fibreglass past is waterproof whereas the filler isnt. So if there are any pinholes in the weld then with the fibreglass it can't penetrate to the filler layer :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration Thanks for the simple and clear response.
I have yet to see a pre-made panel that fitted like it was intended for the entire panel to be used.
Yes a lot of people think they have to use as much of the panel as possible but in actual fact you should use only what’s needed :)
Hey. Just found about your channel a couple days ago from someone dropping a link to your channel in local MX-5 owners chat. I've got a question - Let's say that the lower part of sill near the wheel is starting to rust but arch looks fine inside&outside. How do you know that the arch also needs to be cut open and inspected/repaired?
Thanks, hoping for an answer but keep the good work, it really picks up my spirit seeing that rust CAN be slowed down with a proper repair!
Thank you, in our experience when the sill is rusted then there is always rust inside the arch
@@yorkshirecarrestoration Thanks for the answer! Adding another thing to the “to do” list for my NA mx5
Hi mate love the video! I'm looking to tackle this myself on the driveway. I've enrolled in a night class to learn basic mig welding. Do you have any recommendations on what sort of welder to buy and any tips would be much appreciated!
I'm a mechanic by trade but the thought of cutting into body work is proper daunting!
Thanks, Ben
welder doesn't have to be expensive but id suggest something no bigger than 160amp and we use 0.8 wire with just 02 but a o2 and argon mix is better :)
I need to do the exact same to my na mx5 but I don't have a garage, I have all the equipment will it be much more difficult doing it outside?
No Iv done it outside on occasions. Just avoid the rain :)
Lovely work. Do you guys just do mx5 arches? Or is that a silly question? I have a 2003 Honda accord euro r with the arch lips starting to slightly “bubble” so they’ll need tackling one day before they drop off!
We restor anything and we have done for over 25 years but our passion is classics :) if you need to you can contact us on instagram :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration well that’s good to know! Watched loads of your videos now and like the work you do. I’ll be in contact when the time comes thanks for the reply 👍🏼
Tsk Tsk, C'mon Steve, get a mask on sanding fibreglass! ⚠👀🤨😉
I held my breath 😁
I have mixed feelings. I know you show us the easy way, but it seems like you had the great opportunity to mark and cut it perfectly so you didn't have to use a kilo of filler 😢
That was botchingThe job .that should've been a quarter panel change now its full bog that just shouldn't have been done I would never allow that on my car botchiiiy
It's not your car and it's as good as the customer could afford and kept it on the road. Thank you for watching.
Excellent video's guys, but ;-)
The top of the repair panel is grind back for welding.
But the top part inside the car is unprotected?
Isn't that overlapped sheet metal a guaranty that rust will one day or another strike back?
Nope all cars have lapped panels everywhere. Don't think I know of one car that dosnt have lapped panels somewhere on them and it's a misconception that a lapped panel will rust quicker. It won't if treated correctly after its been repaired and looked after in the future. Granted it dose usually take a little more filler to hide the step and weld :)
You guys make it look so easy... I have absolutely no need, but I find myself wanting to visit a toolpron shop and come away with air compressors, cutters, grinders, and welders...
p.s. get a mask on please when grinding back galvanised panels! (and the fibreglass!)
Haha it is very satisfying :)
Why you never butt weld those wheel arches?
Wasn't in the customers budget
Great instructive content as ever. Good to see your subscriber numbers building nicely. 👍
Thank you bazer. Yes they are climbing nicely :)
ЛАЙК)
Thank you :)
Who do you use for panels?
david manners :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration thanks
nice idea.. this way anyone can do the job
Thank you Cristiano
@@yorkshirecarrestoration I mean, "a anyone no very experienced guy can do the job", no anyone anyone..rsrs
Thank you so much for an informative and entertaining vid, but can I ask, why do you sometimes do an overlap joint and sometimes a butt joint? Thanks, Paul.
Mostly for variety so people can see the different ways of doing the repair but as with the rear arches , not man have the skill to do a butt joint so we tend to show lapped joint :)
Great video, as always, Sir. I have two questions: what is this black stuff? A panel glue? And 2nd: how many MX5 are You rescuing by year? ;)
Hi, the black sealant is tiger seal or equivalent and we save a lot of MX5's haha
just found your channel your videos are amazing to watch !!just subscribed !! 👍
Hi Collin , glad your enjoying the videos and thank you for the subscribe :)
excellent job you made it look easy done it myself and it wasnt how many hours to get it ready for paint ? keep up the good work
its just a little practice :)
You are a real inspiration for me
gee the fingers of doom ( the air tool thingy with the steel needles ) dose a great job. why do you use both fiberglass filler and normal ?? filler ?
Hi Karen. The fiberglass is waterproof incase there are any pinholes in the weld :)
So why did you do a lap weld instead of a but weld ?
But welding is exspensive as it's more time consuming and more skilled so more money, The customer didn't want it butt welding due to funds.
When you cut the outer wheel house lip you also cut part of the the inner fender , I did not see you welding that strip back. Did you do that off camera ?
@@duett445 if your referring to the inner lip edge, nope we don't replace that as it only traps water and isnt needed, we dont the outer arch to the inner arch.
Ok. Fair enough about the inner lip. I thought it was needed for strength and rigidity, I mean it is there for a purpose why otherwise was the body designed with the lip.
@@duett445 iv been repairing these for 20 years and never had any adverse effect of removing them even on my track cars :)
Just keen to know the labour charges in uk ,I'm from india
These cars aren't done for the money, they are done for the love of the cars and to shop people how to do it themselves :)
Hi guys. You will soon have repaired all the Miata ever produced.
Haha. Over the last 30 years it feels like I already have :)
All the best
Welding wizard strikes again ! Loving the videos !
Thank you Zain :)
Loved watching this, brilliant as always.
Thank you John.
👍👍👍👍👍
👍👊
good job Professional
thank you :)
What a legend! I'm gonna tackle this at home and been practicing MIG welding. This method of repair looks so good! I've watch most of the repair videos and excited to give it ago!
Thank you glad they were of help. Just take your time and if you get a little overwhelmed just have a cut of tea and leave it alone for a bit :) go back to it when you get excited about it again :)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration yes I’ve done that im on day 2 right now and one the first day just cut all the rust and prep surfaces. Today I started to rust convert and paint inner parts and I’ve welded arch in place!
Any reason that you don’t use t-wash/ mordant solution the galvanised panels before applying etch primer?
@@GiveItBeansGarage Nice :) Keep at it and it will be done :)
@@WHYKICKAMOOCOW100 no reason just preference :)
Do you ever use Kurust or similar before you apply the primer?
Yes all the time. I s in most of our videos, it's the clear spray liquid we use but we don't always show spraying it on as we have said in lots of vids to use it on everything. We use mippa mipparox rust neatralizer.
Steve why don’t you butt weld the sill on to the existing panel 👍
Hey you got new mig welder 😆 did the old one pack up or snap on doing a good deal ? 😉
Haha yep we killed the old one and snapon was doing a good deal :)
