    Holy f*cking shit, you are a Sorcerer!
    This Maschine’s are awesome, I had a Roland VS2000 CD, the last in line, but the only one with USB!
    I install one VS8F-2 Board and one VS8F-3 Board into the VS2000 with all 10 released Plugins for the VS8F-3 Board!
    I sell the Maschine for 8 or 10 Years …today I must say, I wish it back, really!
    The VS2000 have a great Recording Sound, ok only in 44.1Khz but 16 and 24Bit possible.
    The VS8F-3 Plug-ins were awesome, the Soundblender Soundtoys are totally once, you get with that sounds out your guitar, you never heard them before in your life, and that‘s Sounds were Great!
    Nice Job Man …puha … I never can do that, I believe that such Maschine’s you have there, are really really good today, and I think no one else have a VS 2400 like you have…. Cool, really really nice Job!
    Thanks for sharing this!

      Sorry for the long answer. What have you done, have you replaced the old OS firmware with a new one? Or something else? With such manipulations, the machine may not see disks with previous projects, but the data on them is still stored, unless you have started the formatting procedure. If you have formatted, then in this case you only need the guys who are engaged in data recovery on hard drives.
      Did you manage to solve the problem?

    мой 2480 тоже нуждается в замене. Но у него недостаток - пластиковый корпус.
    Кстати совсем не обязательно делать экранированый провод до файдеров, там все равно перед АЦП стоит RC цепь.

    Hi Anthony, are you familiar with the Roland VS-2480? Can a fader replacement be done on that machine similar to the one in this video? The only thing is that the upper case housing on the 2480 is plastic not metal

    • @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
      @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice  3 роки тому

      Hi Connor! Good question ...
      Unfortunately, I haven't had any experience reworking a 2480 machine yet. Once upon a time (seems to be in 2004) I opened it to replace the battery (this was 2480 machine of my friend's) and we didn't take it disassembly completely to get to the faders, so I don't know, how is it done there and is there a suitable size in chassis for installing long faders.
      If you are "with hands" and have technical experience, then you yourself will be able to disassemble the car to clarify this point, and it will be clearer for you there. In addition, you can take a few photos and put them, for example, on Google Photos and give me a link...

    • @connorpower
      @connorpower 3 роки тому +1

      @@Anthony_Scott_Studioservice Thanks for your reply. I will look into that. Before I do, I will dig up data by others who have done fader replacements - all of which were done using like-for-like stock parts, which only serve to postpone the inevitable issues, briefly. The fader board in that model is notorious for failure, as are the CD drives. I would like to replace all the faders, exchange the CD for a DVD read/write (Panasonic), replace the battery, and mod the fan to install a switch at the rear panel to enable it to be turned off during recording and back on as required. Also, the IDE hard drive can be replaced with an SSD (Samsung Evo) further reducing heat build up. For an old machine, there may be life in the old dog yet. The preamps are great as are the stock EQ's and Compression. I would love to figure out a way to include a USB port for mulittrack transfer to a PC. Wishful thinking.

      Well, if so, then you have a lot of work ahead of you. Write if you have any questions (maybe I can help you with something), and good luck.
      Yes, ... regarding the transfer of tracks to a computer, there is also a Presonus V-Fire converter.
      By the way, it would be a great solution if someone made a CD-RW drive emulator with a USB connector!

    • @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
      @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice  3 роки тому

      Hello! Are you interested in the model of the original faders or the ones I used during the upgrade?
      These faders in the video are Alps, RSA0N11 series, and if I remember correctly a more complete number, it is RSA0N11M9A04.
      The channel and master faders are all exactly the same. Stereo control is done on the motherboard, receiving a DC signal from a single ("mono") fader.

  • @mariobros237
    @mariobros237 3 роки тому

    Question, does the VS use Linear or Exponential faders? and does the ALPS faders that you used are the right resistance shape?

    • @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
      @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice  3 роки тому +1

      The faders that I have used are linear (genuine faders are also linear).
      These are the so-called "digital faders" or "DC faders" and are used in many digital mixing applications. Their carbon track is connected to DC supply (5...9V), and the sliding contact transfers the voltage change to the motherboard to the microcontroller. And the microcontroller receives this voltage and controls the audio level change according to the "audio curve" embedded in it, in simple terms.

      Hi Wayne! Sorry, I answered late. Problems can be, yes, with the power supplied to the control board, and the contacts of the ribbon cables can also oxidize. Hello Rildo, thanks!
      For 2400 machines, I know that there are two methods. One of them is software, if this page and links work, then you can try.
      www.thegoodlibrary.com/VSWaveExport.php
      There it requires to install special software on desktop PC and then removing HDD from 2400 and connection it to PC.
      But I have never try it.
      Another method - it's real time 8-tracks recordind into PC DAW via R-bus interface using Presonus V-Fire interface or the Roland RPC-1 interface card.

      If you have a power surge occured, it could damage the power supply in the first place. The likelihood of damage to components on the motherboard is quite small, but it also exists.
      If you have a familiar electronics technician nearby, you could check the voltages at the PSU output together with him for a start. As well as voltages at some points on the motherboard.

    Amazing job on your Vs2400s!
    I have just bought one of these second hand and 3 of its faders are not working properly.
    The motors are working but these 3 faders doesn't move as supposed, moving to the wrong position and eventually getting stuck at the bottom or the top.
    As finding replacement faders for the va2400 seems almost impossible, I've being thinking of trying to fix those faulty ones instead of replacing them...
    Do you think it would be possible to fix a fader instead of simply replacing it? I have a resin 3d printer so I'd be able to print small gears or something if needed...
    If the motor is the source of problem, maybe I could get another motorized (alps maybe?) fader and use only it's dc motor to repair vs2400s original one... What do you think?

      Thanks Cesar!
      When a fader in a VS machine behaves in a similar way, as you write, it means that it breaks down and cannot be repaired and restored, alas. What's going on there in the VS faders, I'll tell you.
      The VS faders sliding contact that rides on the carbon track is made of soft metal, and in addition, the track surface in the faders is quite abrasive (as opposed to the carbon in the large professional console faders). Therefore, after 2-3 years of intensive work, especially with projects where you write a lot of automation and move the faders, the sliding metal contact is first grinded off, and its rounded tip breaks off. At this moment, nothing changes in the operation of the machine, and you work further without suspecting anything. At this time, the broken tip of the contact, which now has a sharp end, grinds furrows in the carbon, and when the carbon is erased from the bakelite board, the machine loses its fader position, and that's it, goodbye. It is almost impossible to restore it in a service center or a home workshop, since carbon in the form of a specially selected liquid composition is applied at the factory and dries in an oven.
      You must unsolder the worn faders from PCB, open it, and the described defect in the form of grooves in the carbon track will probably already be there. To see this better, you can illuminate the bakelite board with carbon with a lamp, directing the light from the back so that it passes through the board.
      The motors and mechanics in the faders are more reliable and can last a long time.

      @@zerorusher Oh, and I already gave you the answer to the previous question :)
      If I understood correctly, then you made a level indicator similar to Roland MB-24?

    • @zerorusher
      @zerorusher 3 роки тому

      Yes, It is!
      Vs sends polyphonic signals to midi channel 16.
      Notes 0 to 23 are channels 1 to 24 and the velocity (0 to 127) indicates the track level.
      It's pretty simple to implement with arduíno receiving the midi notes and lightening the led strips accordingly

      Whether this upgrade will make practical sense for you, if for example you live in another country, and only the cost of delivery to me in Russia and back to you can cost more than $ 200-350 (this should be clarified and depends on the type of delivery, insurance and country) plus works and some parts & matreials. I do not only VS things, but also studio equipment in general (mixers/consoles, tape machines and other gear), and for all the time I did this way only 2 VS here for guys in our country, plus 2 my VS. The guys from other countries ask about too, but again, only one shipping cost in both directions scares away from such an upgrade. Considering that in the end, total expenses can be more expensive than such things are worth today on Ebay. Thanks!

    Are the original faders for the vs-2400 still available from Roland Canada? What was your reasoning to use another brand fader? Were they direct replacements as far as resistance, motor voltage and amperage? I love how you made them replaceable from the top.

    • @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice
      @Anthony_Scott_Studioservice  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the questions. The original Panasonic faders are very difficult to obtain today, they are almost gone, unless you can ask them directly at Roland's Japanese head office by writing to their service department.
      I was looking for replacement faders that would be fairly reliable, inexpensive, with suitable dimensions for installation and sold in sufficient quantities in many places today. Therefore, the choice fell on these Alps. This is a direct replacement for resistance, however their motors need a slightly higher supply voltage of 8 volts instead of 5 (which entailed installing a separate power supply inside the 2400 machine) and a total current of at least 1.5 - 2 amps. The mod with a removable panel makes it possible to quickly and easily replace a failed or worn fader, for example, during a session or remote recording (just having a few spare pre-wired faders and a hex 2mm screwdriver in bag).

      No, I did not do anything with preamps and converters. Replacing a preamp or converter is not just a matter of replacing the chip, and in most cases it requires a redesign of schematic and a printed circuit board.
      In the studio, I record basically, through an external Roland preamps/converters (two ADA-7000) and I rarely use internal preamps in 2400 (with the exception of live recordings where a need many inputs).

      Yes, faders are a common illness of these machines, and if something wears out, then the faders wear out first.
      I'm in Russia, and the restoring of your 2480 can be a particular problem (the common cost of shipping can be equal a third of the price of the 2480 on Ebay).

      P.P.S. а, если ещё миди клавиатуру с адекватным питч-бендом врезать в систему и часть органов управления перетащить с vs2480 - это будет вообще пинком их новому Fantomу (несмотря даже на скорость загрузки и отсутствие микро- тачскрина...)))

    In my experience of owning both the VS-2400 and now the VS-2480 x 3, I can tell you the faders on the 2480 are far far superior to those found on the 2400, The 2480 faders are much quicker and much snappier in operation.

    Hey dude! Amazing work! I have a 2400 and would like to be able to use it for much longer. Do you remember if there are any resources that you used during this build that you would mind sharing such as schematics or parts lists? Do you know of a good forum for restoration/modification to these? Thanks!

      Hello! Sorry for the long answer. Many thanks!
      Unfortunately, all I used was some parts and tools that were at hand , as well as some experience and accumulated knowledge, and I did not turn to any resources or links. Buying new Alps faders - first there was an experience of buying on Thomann and later on Ebay (they turned out to be better in quality). Also will be needed a new wider fader knobs (aka T-lever). If this you still need, you write, and I will try to remember and find these sources. If you need documentation for the 2400, I can send it you an email.
      Here is the only forum dedicated to Roland machines:

    "...small upgrade..."? Скорее уж "total tweak" :-D Да, я слоупок-слоупок, но! Не приходилось ли связываться с VM-C7200? Может быть, подскажете, чем набрызгать (намазать, настучать...) подклинивающий фейдер, или сразу под замену? Kontakt 701 не спас.
    Идея сделать сьемную панель фейдеров тоже витает в воздухе (и даже ЧПУшник есть в соседнем помещении!!!), но никак не соберусь...

      Опс, сорри, ваш коммент пропустил… С системами микширования vm в плане ремонта не сталкивался. Если же фейдер в цифровой системе начал конкретно глючить, то это 99% замена, и никакая химия не спасёт, т.к. углеродное резистивное покрытие скорее всего уже стёрто до дыр (точнее будет видно при разборке и осмотре углеродного трека на просвет).

    Im totally impressed! But why so much effort on such an old, limited machine? Why not just go to a better system? Are those slaved together?

      Also, did you change the internal storage or upgrade anything else other than the faders?

      Because these machines are hailed as the best , if your recording then you shouldn't need a fast system to edit and cheat.

      Thank you for rating! For me, these old machines are somewhat more comfortable and quite familiar. I do many things on them very quickly, although at the same time I use Logic and Cubase from time to time. I decided to give them a second life, as I mainly use them for remote live recording and further editing and mixing... of course, with using some outboard - Lex PCM70 and M3000 as reverbs -))
      "The best system" is a relative therms today, with existing developed and well-sounding mac/pc DAW's, the difference is leveled. If says about serious hardware systems, I probably can only mention IZ, but this is quite expensive for me (with 32 analog in/out's), and meaningless. For my tasks two VS and two ada-7000 do a good job when they are needed.
      Yes, two VS linked "master-slave".
      About internal storage upgrade, i replaced factory 40 GB HDD's on the SSD's Intel 330 series 120GB via sata/ide adapters.
