CARDBOARD SESSIONS ~ Battles ~ #12
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 гру 2024
- Formed in NYC in 2002, Battles today is ex-Don Caballero and Storm & Stress member Ian Williams and ex-Helmet and Tomahawk drummer John Stanier. Often labeled as a Math Rock band, Battles are the embodiment of musical experimentation, with a sound that’s constantly evolving. For Episode 12, we’re front and center at the famous Powerstation Studio in NYC. A place where a few rockers you may have heard of have laid down tracks, like Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones and Madonna.
Welcome to Cardboard Sessions. A jam format music series that brings musicians together to play instruments built and designed by the creators of Cardboard Chaos. A creative exploration for the love of music and the chance to hear something original. No rehearsals, no plan. The moment when a creative spark hits and you dig deep to explore the realm.

Love watching my dad play drums
big dad vibes
So do we… for more than 30 years now… Saw him play last week in Boston and better than ever.
My fav uncles!!
So this is how Battles sounds at 2023. Amazing stuff.
Unbelievably talented dudes!! These fellas are the most talented and friendliest men you could ever wish to meet - first class gentlemen. Their music blew us away! Love you guys xxx
It's so wild how it goes from being almost a mess for a couple of bars and the John reinterpretes the pattern and suddenly it all works 😅
Loved seeing them just jam a bit!
Ian's guitar playing is always phenomenal
I like Battles in this version, no synth/keyboard and pre-recorded vocals. More interesting and focus with their instrument
This sounds like some old school Don Cab shit
You can take the man out of the Don, but you can't take the Don out of the Cab
@@Two-Eyed_Boy exactly
Damon Che is drumming again on the Don Caballero youtube channel.
It's so strange to see how time passes inexorably. Sometimes that gives us back the wisdom sound of these masters of the genre. Battles guys we
Saw them during early Thursday night sets at Bonnaroo in 2008. And in Pittsburgh at a tiny bar in 2006 or early 2007. Helped John carry a drum in from their trailer. They opened with Race : In and I kid you not after the intro of the song leading up to the moment where the drums pick up and all the instruments kick in, at that exact moment the power went out from too much juice being used I guess. This literally happened 2-3 times before the issue was resolved. Each time the song was getting right at that part I was in such suspense to see if power would stay on or not. I could be wrong but I want to say the bar was Gooski’s.
Im dying to hear a whole new album, this was familiar but soooo fresh and inspired all at the same time... love it!
Is there something coming?
Always
@@timneumann8515 I Hope so but they didn’t announce anything official
If tradition holds (album every 4 years), we’re due for some new material soon
Spoke to John last year when they were on tour, they were gunning to get back into the studio when the tour was done. Said it was long overdue.
Am I really that old?! Holy shit.. Turned 38 today. Ioved these guys in 2010
if their next album sounds like this it's probably going to be one of their best yet!
Dude. Absolutely not. A bunch of jumbled notes. No solid hooks like their first 2 LPs had.
@@ericmsandoval I felt hooked throughout this
@@ericmsandoval Is the quality of music now defined by whether or not his has a big, ear candy hook?
@michaelgraham9774 for this band..for me…yes. Lol
I listen to a lot of noise and drone music that is completely devoid of any “hooks” or “beat” but when it comes to Battles I LOVE their catchy shit.
@@ericmsandovalAccept that they're a different band now and appreciate the current lineup for its own merit.
BEAUTIFUL. NEED MORE BATTLES
Sounds great! Eager to see you guys in Montreal with Mr Bungle!!!
Incredible to see this. Was following Third Thursday for snowboards, then obviously transitioning to some of the bands you (and I love) so I went back through and Mars V! and everyone else, how incredible! Just went back through this whole series and love the swamp sessions as I went once and think it might be where music was born (along with frogs). Pinnacle snowboard being glass from Italy, Pinnacle guitar being anyone that enjoys it!
Oh hell yeah
enjoy this a lot. when he really gets going it definitely reminds me of 80's King Crimson, both in the actual tone of it and all the overlapping progressions that make your head spin
This is funnnnnn!
This is the most interesting thing Battles has done since Ty left. Just Ian playing the guitar and reminding us that he's f***ing brilliant on the instrument (I ain't forgot about Storm & Stress) and John beating the drums into submission.
I couldn’t disagree more. As a fan of Battles and Don Cab, I have to say this performance IMO was sloppy and utterly unremarkable. And John is basically playing the same beat from “Race : In” (track 1 on Mirrored).
@@mikesfrends yep--and, before that, he's playing essentially the same drum part from "Dance" (track 5 from B EP). It's meant to be sloppy--it's a jam. You're clearly not a fan of Storm & Stress, which is what informs Ian's playing more than anything these days.
yasss!! awesome !!!
two legends!!
so badass
❤❤❤❤❤
I need this music to keep happening
This is Jazz
john always giving 100% !!🎉
that part from 2:00 on is insanely beautiful, very midwest.😍
The only good part.
OMG, my dad rocks the cardboard
If you pull more DC sounds for the next album I'll love you forever. I mean I will anyways but those cross sticks sound like cardboard ☺️
What is that strat made from?
I hate when drummers muffle the snare drum. It is always the best tuned wide open. I saw another video with John and he had a wide open tuned snare that sounded incredible.
Dont understand the comments saying this is bad. This sounds better than most of what they had in the 2010s, and thats saying quite a bit
Thats pretty sad
What song Is this? Or Its an impro?
The sound of the guitar sounds like the guitar from Ice Cream but I think this is new material. It's cool
@@candlerredden yesss it remind me to Ice Cream, but sounds like new stuff, really cool
Thanks Man 😊
@@gordoalcuadrado1338 yeh you're welcome, it does . It's awesome it reminds me of some old school math rock like Don Caballero
@@candlerredden totally!! And a bit G?G! or old school Tera Melos too!!
@@gordoalcuadrado1338 yeah definitely Giraffes? Giraffes! And some Tero too
damon che looks like stanier
I can see it a bit
never seen Ian on a non Gibson guitar
Ньюкасл чемпик!
they bought all that new gear right when they ran out of ideas huh
One by one everyone keeps leaving this band. Pretty soon it's just gonna be a million pedals and a drum machine run by AI playing on loop.
they dont seem very happy?
they're depressed
For the entire 16 years I've been listening to Battles, trust me when I say John (and to a lesser extent Ian) always looks like that.
there might be Battles' Pinkerton incoming!
@@emmakatenotcake yaaa? Idk I have been a fan for the same amount of time. I remember them being more enthusiastic
I love helmet, but this just reinforces my opinion that Ian needs Damon on drums. Battles is good, but I don't think they'll ever be as good as Don Cab. I will say that around the 5:15 mark John really starts getting into it, but everything before then would have been improved with Damon on the sticks.
Kinda the same beat as track 1 on mirrored
I like John Stanier style, i think the project don't need to be more complex than already is, his drumming is minimalistic and powerful.
I respect them both immensely, but this is just... not good.
Thank you for agreeing.
what a messs.....
Unfortunately this is true
Umm nah.
