You clean a trumpet the same as the horn except you remove the valves. Most trumpet valves are numbered so they don't get mixed up. If your trumpet doesn't, color code your valves with different colored twist ties or something like that.

Horn playing friends, we play a beast of an instrument. Nobody said it would be easy! Don't compare yourself to other players, just keep practicing and pushing yourself. Sometimes I wanted to quit when I was the only horn in my band in high school. I felt ashamed for making mistakes and thought everybody could hear me and was judging me for making mistakes. Now I am a music major in college, and I am required to take lessons for horn. It can be difficult sometimes but it is so worth it! The horn is a beautiful instrument! Keep pushing! Listen to horn players on UA-cam. Name your instrument, create a bond with it! Don't leave it in its case, practice it!! Communicate and become a team with your section members if you have one. Have pride in what you do and see how your perspective changes! Best of luck!!❤️📯
The Valve Trombone can do it too, it has the same range as a Trumpet but down an Octave. I think if they always numbered the Valves, things would get easier.
Great video, thanks! I just found an old French Horn on the side of the road (Yamaha YHR321), it's a little dented, dirty and missing the mouth piece. But I've always wanted a French Horn (such a beautiufl instrument!), so I'm going to try to clean it up. This video will help a lot. :D

@ender zek Great question. All straps and hand guards that I know of, are removable. Either they are attached with Velcro or shoe lace. That should be removed before cleaning.
That doesn’t sound like an ideal situation. Could the lacquer be coming off? Never use hot water when bathing a brass instrument. Luke warm water with a liquid dish soap like Dawn to cut the slide grease is all you need. Also a snake brush.

Can I do this even if my horn is unlacquered? I’m pretty sure my horn is a few decades old and it’s desperate to be clean, but I won’t unless I’m absolutely sure I won’t ruin it.
That depends. If you play after eating, and don’t brush your teeth (sometimes rehearsal is after lunch or dinner and brushing isn’t an option), then you should put a snake down the lead pipe (the pipe that the mouthpiece goes into) every one or two weeks. If you do that, then once a year should be fine. This only my opinion. Others may feel differently.
You can buy them for $5-$10. I prefer the metal flex spring kind. I use a cheap vinyl brush in my video but I’ve had issues with the brush coming off in the Horn.
Shelby Lavy The great thing about brass is that it doesn’t rust. It can corrode. It can lay in a clean stream or lake and corrode after a few years. Now there’s an issue called red rot but that’s from the inside out and that’s from the acids in saliva. Actually, bathing a brass instrument once or twice a year with clean water will help prevent that too.
QuickFixTips I play the saxophone. I am very lucky because I rinsed off the instrument afterward with warm water. I thought it was broken at first because it wasn’t playing in tune and some keys were stuck. But after a while of drying it off it managed to work fine again. I got really lucky, I thought it was a goner. But thanks for the quick response.
Evelyn McCabe Whatever you do, don’t submerge the sax in water. The pads will be ruined. Just run a swab through it and wipe off the outside with a soft cloth. Sticky pads can be cleaned individually. Try putting a piece of paper between the pad and the collar it closes on. Push the key onto the paper and then pull the paper out. Repeat a few times. If it still sticks, take it to a repair shop.

Lesson to Tuba players: Make sure to quite a bit of time cleaning that sucker if it is a four+ valve compensating system

I know I'm a little lait but what do you do if you have a build on lether strap on your horn where you put your left hand?

It’s up to you. You can towel dry the outside right away then grease and oil the valves and slides right away if you’re in a hurry.

Hmmm. What instrument are you cleaning? How much bleach did you use? A cap full in a full bathtub of lukewarm water shouldn’t hurt it
