A little heads up!
Using Spell Cascade instead of Concentrated Effect in the setup is more damage overall - However, I've chosen to stick to Concentrated Effect due to performance issues with Spell Cascade. If you're using Spell Cascade you're casting 2x as many orbs, at the cost of significantly less average damage per orb (but more damage overall) - If you have a beastly PC, I think it's worth it - But considering the damage without Concentrated Effect, and the much more smooth performance, I've personally deemed Spell Cascade not to be worth it. This is completely up to you of course!

Top build. I levelled up the build over the weekend and would like to let everyone know about my progress. I couldn't get a sword like yours so I just stop at CoC at Level 20 and multimod, spell dmg/chaos, hits can't be evaded, attack speed and crit chance. Total of 7ex crafting cost. Swords with the attack speed/double damage mod are going for more than 20ex.
With VD at lvl 18 and my VD average hit at 80K, I did uber elder at level 88 and managed to down it with one death (standing in shaper beam). I wasn't happy with conc effect as it made cyclone tiny, so I changed it to immolate (next best according to POB). Lastly, I went with vitality and Anger, picking up a watcher's eye with +crit multi and life leech (instead of life on hit) for cheap.
Having so much fun. Might want to play around with changing to BC and BF maybe later.
Very glad you liked the build, and awesome you went for the craft yourself - the double damage mod is by no means necessary, as you can probably tell already.
Sweet variation of the build, I like that - That is what PoE is all about, fiddling with supports gems, gear and the like is a fun and learning process. I'm sure you'll have a very smooth time with a level 20 or 21 (hopefully) Volatile Dead gem.

A.-PS(so that's just AS, I suppose): Just read the patch notes, no more 7-link 2handers. Also 3 is the maximum crafted mods again. Meaning, not only we lose 1/3 damage from losing a support gem (either Combustion/Inspiration/Conc. Effect), also crafting/buying similar sword is *exponentially* expensive. At this point, after spending around 50 hours practice and coming up with different strats to level (was just preparing an alternative one with Armageddon Brand/Pyroclast Mine that you can trade 2 hours of farming maps for story progression), this hard nerf made me lose my enthusiasm. I'll leave my original comment for others that are still determined to follow through. Wish you the best of luck!
I love this build so much that I'm going to make it my league starter and my main for the whole Metamorph league . Unfortunately the build is not a low cost, strong league starter like a totem or a summoner. It's also an added challenge that there are no up to date guides tailored for this specific idea that I have. So I've done some tests, for me at least, found a good enough way to level. If you're low on funds or want to start the league with this build, I figured you might find some of my ideas useful:
-Level up Explosive Traps(+Swift Assembly + whatever damage support) for bosses, Frost Bomb + Onslaught (+whatever damage support) until Desecrate (Opens in Yeena after "Intruders in Black" quest, the one you kill the lightning spider monster Fidelitas).
-Use Desecrate + Spell Cascade in one slot, Volatile Dead + Spell Cascade (+Combustion + whatever damage support) until way later in Act 4 when you get Cast WHILE CHANNELING unlocked in Petarus and Vanja after defeating Malachai. Yeah, you can't reliably proc CoC until you have cruel lab + solid weapon + diamond flask. Even if you could, everything one shots shadow at this stage so it's safer to be able to keep the distance.
-Use Cyclone + CwC + Desecrate + VD until you can get good items. This is over 60 now, I've tested lv50 items until t2 maps and it holds up well enough to save up some currency to get good gear.
I've tested 4 times now and getting to the maps, with all the passive point quests and normal + cruel lab, takes about 7 hours.
Some tips:
-Use Smoke Mine + Flame Dash for mobility
-Use Flammability curse instead of Assassin's Mark until CoC is reliable
-Need lots of Transmutes to craft Lv1 Fire Damage things to your weapons as of 3.8. You can get the recipe as early as Act 2 Vaal Oversoul boss room.
-Level up your main gems in the weapon swap. You can get Cyclone from Siosa after completing a Fixture of Fate quest in the Library in Act 3.
-Decoy Totem helps out a little bit (from Siosa),so is Stone Golem (you can get it from Oyun as a quest reward)
- Rush to Saboteur passive at first (dont forget to respec it).
-You can compliment your single target damage and shave off at least 20+ minutes in total with Pyroclast Mine (Stormblast getting nerfed) which you can get from Maramoa in Act 3 as a quest reward (not sure but might be Sever the Right Hand quest). Or if you don't want to anything with mines, same quest also can reward you with Cremation which needs Desecrate corpses to work and is a very powerful spell. Don't forget to wp back to town from Lunaris Temple so that you can use the one of your choosing for Piety fight.

In PoE, as long as that character exists, you can whisper them and the message will be sent to whichever character they're playing. This is a character that I have no future plans of deleting, so this is good for at least couple years. Shoot a message if you can catch me online. Great build and guide, Mathel did a similar one the other week and loved that too, mixes fun with damage. How did u feel post patch notes with it much harder to get damage and mods on items also harder to penetrate and limits on the balls. What changes if any will you make if your playing with it next league. Are there any decent uniques that can be used to get around the multi mod issues?

I have received a lot of comments and questions, especially in-game, regarding the status of this build in 3.9.
The build is alive and well!
I've done my best to work around the few changes in 3.9, and so far everything seems very promising. I've crafted myself a sword, without Hits Can't Be Evaded (due to the new multimod), so some accuracy is needed on gear/passives to make it work 100%.
I will make a follow-up on this build guide sometime next week, with the tweaks/changes I've made.

Hello guys - Sorry for the late response/reply, I've had a ton of real-life work.
Due to the various bugs the new "60 ball limit"-patch has revealed/created, I did not find VD suitable for a new and reworked build guide.
The build still performs great, but there are so many bugs associated with VD currently (balls not disappearing, getting over-written etc.) that I did not feel like continuing to put a ton of effort into the build. I think the bugs were present in 3.8 as well but wasn't noticed due to the fact VD had no ball limit.
When these bugs are fixed I will return with a new and reworked CoC VD guide.
Any update to the tree or skill setup? My hit chance is only 70% and now Im not sure if its better to remove vitality and level higher precision or change tree abit like taking Acuity or Depth Perception node? But Im not sure what should I sacrifice from current tree.

To craft the amulet I alt spammed until I hit the big "as extra" mod, and then aug/regal and got lucky (took a few thousand alts though). Amulet only has to be ilvl 81 for that mod :-)
The sword seems quite expensive to get, but it looks like a really great build. Loved my time with coc frostnova/glacial cascade/frostorbs. This seems like a similar thing just with targeted balls and slightly less flashbangs.

So can I use herald of ash without the reduced mana reservation on helmet nor on the amulet? with only a lvl4 enlighten?

Also: a helmet with the additional corpse (like starkonja for ex.) would be still better than a helmet with just -9 to fire res right? because an additional corpse is basically 33% more damage?
To run Herald of Ash along with Vitality and Zealotry you'd need a level 4 Enlighten, and either -5% Mana Reservation on your helmet (from Bound fossils) OR the "Sovereignty" node anointed on your amulet, as shown as an alternative in the video.
Yes, the enchant is much more important than the -9% Fire Resistance mod. However, none of them are truly needed for the build to function.

Is it possible to get this build up and running prior to securing the 6L Sword? A leveling progression overview would be great - I see you answered to another player you leveled with OoS and SB - but when did you switch to CoC, and did you do it prior to the 6L sword? (e.g. with a Tabula) Thanks!
You could roll a 5L Shaped Exquisite with the CoC mod and roll with that untill you can link it for sure - Yeah OoS and SB is fine for leveling, switch to the sword & the CoC setup when you can equip the Exquisite Blade (just do the first 3 labs first), and it should be smooth sailing from then on!
@@DEFEKT1 Well an Exquisite Blade is a L70 item. I've just done so many OoS/SB Builds this league, not sure I can level another Assassin with them :) - and the skill setup is completely different for them compared to the VD build. I'm just wondering if we could put together a more refined leveling process for this build prior to the VD sword that's solid to L70 with HC survival -- that actually uses VD? My understanding is it works great even at low levels. We just need to figure out if self-cast or some unique (like poet's pen) approach could work.

@@MoofyCakes Well anything could work, it's just leveling, it takes 4-8 hours (depending on experience) or so to reach level 70 and do the labs. So the skill you're using doesn't really matter that much at the end of the day ^^
I guess CwC with Cyclone and your setup in the chest would work pretty good :-)
With no CoC weapon mod what gem would you replace for the CoC gem that would keep the build relatively strong. Maybe switch to a cheap unique since we can’t get CoC in the item itself.

I leveled as Orb of Storms / Storm Brand with this one I think, it's really smooth and you can transition straight into CoC when you can equip the sword - I suggest you do both normal & cruel lab before going CoC.

Hi friend I'm trying to make this build on ps4 but I came up with a problem, like you do to throw desecrate and volatile dead? Since I try to launch them manually but my cycle stops, the only way I can use it is by changing concentrated effect by cast channeling support
It's a Cast on Critical Strike build. Desecrate and Volatile Dead is cast every time I crit with Cyclone - Please see the support gem on the sword, "Cast on Critical Strike Support" on PoE Wiki :-)
the sword goes high in numbers can't i use a cast on crit gem with a 5 link setup instead would i lose so much damage?

It's a possibility, but using a 5L setup (without the free CoC from the sword), you're are essentially running a 4L setup. You're also missing out on the Hits Cant Be Evaded... But it's do able I think? But you'll definetely be missing out on a ton of damage.

You'd want to remove Concentrated Effect from the overall setup.

Hey! I wouldn't recommend this build as a league-starter. However, you could start as a spell-caster shadow, using Orb of Storms / Storm Brand for clear - Then switch into CoC with the sword later on.

its main part of weapon, it needs 6l, however you can buy any sword that is 6l and has cast on crit but dont expect such hight dps

Noob question, but why take assassin if you are not taking the power charges? Why not go for something like trickster instead that gives charges while channeling?
Totally cool! But it would take quite a while for me to write the different benefits from Assassin, please check out the Ascendancy nodes for yourself:

I don't take more Power Charges from the tree, as there is no need to. Power charges give "40% increased Critical Strike Chance" per charge, which makes no sense if you have almost 100% Critical Strike Chance (they lose their value at that point), therefore, picking other damage nodes is much for effective. Everything has been compared in Path of Building to make sure I get the most out of every point on the tree.

playing this now, with a shadow you just go, herald of ash, ice golem, blasphemy assassins mark, precision, 4-link green chest coc-cyclone-desecrate-VD.. and you clear like a god. Just get the 80crit 10attackspeed unique dagger at lvl 20 n dualwield.

I replaced a few things to push for even more DPS, but there is really no need. I would follow the build, as it is the most "all-round" build I think.

Yes, yes it is. You need to alt spam the right base (which typically is not easy to get the first few days) then multimod it which is a few exalts. Likely something you build into (level the gems needed for week 2 or something off hand).
hello. can you explain how to craft CoC + as\dd. ive spent about 3k alt, 500 augs . 100 regals and never even close to this combo, mb you use specific pets or smthng like that?

I want to reset my cobra lash guy for this build. Would I be able to clear legions and maps quickly without dying? My cobra lasher is lvl91but died a lot which made leveling suck. Maybe I can fix him.
My second build is a summoner that face rolls everything with shit gear. However the summoner can’t clear whole screens of legions.
It's an amazing legion/map clear build, and having 7k health with a ton of dodge/spell dodge feels amazing.
Is there a budget weapon we can use with a 6 link body armor?
I was running dual wield rapiers with high crits and tabula until I got my 6 link weapon. After I had the sword, I took an armor with 2 x 3-link in which I put 2 CWDT-builds. 1 armageddon brand and 1 blind, just for shits n giggles.
What will you replace the weapon with since that will be removed in the next patch?

Cospri's wouldn't make sense I think, then it's a completely different build. Cospri's trigger socketed COLD gems on critical strike, which wouldn't work for Volatile Dead or Desecrate... but you sure could make a funky version with Cospri's casting some cold spells + the VD setup in your body armour :-)
So many possibilities, but it would be a different build.

Sure thing - I hope they fix the varius bugs with VD though, there's something fishy going on with the skill currently. But it still rocks.

NoskillNoLife if you have the currency, just go for it. In that case, roll over it ane get another coc next time. If you get the coc, dont augment. Just regal. Augmenting will give you 25% chance of annuling off the useless mod. Get coc> regal for hybrid double damage

2- Hits can't be evaded is totally necessary?
Either a high %Local Crit or a high %Attack Speed is just fine - Or nothing at all! The "Chance to Deal Double Damage / Attack Speed"-mod is by no means necesarry.
For this build, I think "Hits Can't be Evaded" is quite necessary - It simply making gearing so much easier.
Without it, you would need to have quite a lot of accuracy on gear, which takes up room for potential resistances and so - And you would most likely need some %accuracy from the passive tree as well.

Just farm it up the mancer, since currency generation on that toon is a cakewalk. Roll this toon afterwards.
Can this build do reflect maps since it has "crits dont reflect" mod?
it can but crits have to be up all the time cause if not, you will instantly die

You also cast a lot more frequently with CoC compared to CwC, which results in a much higher damage output - The upside to CwC is that you can pre-stack orbs before a boss, or you can sort of play the build as "ranged", as you don't have to Cyclone close to mobs. It's just much less damage than CoC.
@@DEFEKT1 mh true about the triggering... 0.15 vs 0.35 sec, but for boss fights where you shouldnt facetank the boss the real output might be equal, while cwc is safer.
playing CoC myself~ just thinking about how flamesurge instead of VD might perform
@@Syrill_ Well, there's no real boss in PoE that requires prolonged facetanking with this kind of dps output... This build can easily handle the "slaps" from Elder and Shaper, and when it comes to beam/balls, you simply just Cyclone "around" it, avoiding the damage that way. But I totally get your point!
why no spell cascade to triple the orbs dps?

Is it an expensive build? I am not familiar with melee weapon/build.
It is actually more of a "caster-build", considering our damage output is pure spell damage. But yeah, it is a bit expensive, the sword itself is around 10-14 ex, depending on the mods and so. But aside from the sword, it's not too bad.
What budget for this build?
It can be done on an 8-10ex budget (only the 6-linked multi-modded sword that's expensive), but if you really wanna make it shine, expect to spend 14-18ex or so.

Don't remember if that's a suffix or prefix? But of course! It's a really strong mod. Most important is the CoC mod of course.

If I swap my Concentrated Effect with Spell Cascade (which is slighty stronger) I drop quite a bit in FPS... which is why I've chosen not to use that support gem. Simply ruins the gameplay in my opinion - And it's not like VD is lacking any damage without :D

Sword is a bit expensive, considering the mod/multi-mod, and the fact that it's 6-linked (could work on a 5L too though)... but like any other build, you can min-max everything and spend a ton of exalts :-)

what about that -60% chaos resistance?
Considering the instant life-leech and the big health pool, chaos degen doesn't really affect me while mapping/delving. I usually ignore chaos res/value other stats higher.

Just craft one? It's really not that hard in all honesty... alt spam until you hit the Cast on Critical Strike prefix, then regal. If you hit something nice like attack speed/%crit/double damage, go ahead and multimod already. If not, annul the bad mod off and you are ready for multi-modding.
I guess it's hard to buy one at the moment since most people are inactive / waiting for the new league...
