I am attempting to do the V65, I have sourced an oil seal for it which is rare as rocking horse shit in the desert with a bit of luck.. I got the retaining ring out using a pin punch. Now I going to get some grease to pump the seal out. Great video.
i guess you didn't watch the video carefully :) take a small pin punch and hammer....knock backup ring down a little until you can remove retaining ring. Then use a grease gun filled with ATF or like i did ...use an air pump...in this case make sure orient the shock like i did and go slowly... Best is to use a grease gun with ATF, much safer
Thank you AndyP... I’ve read on forums that this shock is inadequate for the bike, was okay when new, but awful when old and tired. Have also read they can’t be serviced. You’ve proved the last claim to be untrue. But were you able to restore yours to original operating capacity? Does using a heavier oil help?
AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel We all know that experience my friend. It’s an inspiration for me, you’ve got it looking really good. I hope you find time to complete the build soon. I haven’t even started mine yet. It’s a 1983 USA spec model (solid alloy wheels and ‘INTERCEPTOR’ decals), so rather rare here in the UK. Where are you based? Your accent sounds Romanian to my ear. Hope I haven’t offended you.
AndyP Mercedes-Benz Channel cool. My grandfather spent a lot of time in Canada. I fell in love with a beautiful girl from Romania, and she pronounced words like ‘video’ exactly the same way you do. I would really like to travel around Eastern Europe. In the UK we are fed a lot of misinformation about the region, especially Russia. Good luck with the rebuild.
@Goetmhmiac you are right, lots of people replace the shock with a more modern one if you gonna have the bike as a daily ride. My idea was to restore this bike to original
Hi, I wanted to ask you for information on replacing the oil seal. Can I contact you? I am Italian and I find it difficult to understand in the video I would like to write you some specific questions or send me a purchase link where I can actually get the product thanks
@@andrewp3089 you have to excuse me but I can't find anything as I said I'm not good at foreign languages. can you send me the link to the guide? Thank you
Andrew Popov also doing a restoration on a 1984 VF750F, anxious to see your progress. BTW - if your not going to powder coat the frame, highly recommend a good clear coat to protect the paint. (Recommended to me by another VFR enthusiast).😜 looking forward to more videos !!
These shocks are terrible after 30 years, they are leaking and difficult to maintaine. I replaced it for a YSS-456. Easy to install en adjust....and I have two VF750F motorcyles.
Great vid thank you for sharing.
I've got a 1983 USA spec VF750F V45 Interceptor that needs totally restoring from a rusty state. Gonna be a long lob.

yes. part are getting hard to find...
I’m just starting a full resto on a VF and I saw the paint on your frame, wow, what finish is that it looks great.
turned out it wasn't the best choice for the paint, next time i will clear cote on top. this paint rubs of a little bit.
Good video, thanks for sharing. I'm going to use your video as a reference for rebuilding my shock, whenever that day comes.
hello Andy, i have a VF1000R, my shock looks the same, how do you remove the backup ring?

Read my reply to the previous comment, there's a link for the seal.
Also here's a free manual online. Has everything I'm explaining. Google it

Would this also work on a shock from a VF500F?
I dont know. Find manual, it has disassembly instructions.
I think so...

Not much. Had to stop to take care of some other staff. Might get back in a couple of month.
