    What scares you about running? Is it the hills? Is it the uphill motion? Do hills make you tired? THEY SHOULD! You’re fighting gravity, dirt, mud, sometimes, snow, and yes, your biomechanics. If your biomechanics are not close to picture perfect, your uphill running is going to much more difficult than it needs to be. Forefoot striking is the easiest and most natural way to ascend the hills and mountains. Basically you are creating a biomechanics spring with your forefoot, fascia tendon, and right on up to the soleus and calves. Over time, with light springing in place on a slope, you will build up the strength and suppleness that you need for ascending these mountains in front of you. Watch through this uphill running vlog and let me know what questions you have about this uphill technique. I look forward to answering your questions. Lastly, the question of the day is a tough one. We all have battles in our lives that we face really every single day. What uphill battle are you facing right now, in training and or in life?

    Up!
    QD: I think for me personally, my uphill battle would have to be the age at which I began running. I so wish that I had discovered this amazing sport much sooner than I had, at a much lower weight. Thankfully, I reversed one of those variables!
    I loved your use of the mic in this vlog Seth, nice work!

    My current uphill battle is dealing with grief. I must admit that a long hiatus from running, about 5 years but lately running has brought some relief. I find that watching your videos every morning on my way to the trail serves as motivation and helps to bring me into focus. Thank you for sharing your life and videos with us. I really appreciate it. I can't wait to get a couple of your shirts and will proudly wear them as a reminder to.... "Seek beauty, work hard and love each other"💕

    Up! QOD: having life challenges all at once, the wife keeps on pushing for baby nr4, me wanting to leave it at 3, because we bought a house and I have to get the whole house renovated, family has to move during the works, etc, etc,... don't see how we can combine it. But gotta move forward! On the running side, I love long uphills because it requires you to balance your effort depending on terrain and grade. Powerhiking is part of it, and not a bad solution. Sometimes powerhiking is faster than running. But it's possibly one of the most "visual" means to figure out your fitness level. A certain hill at the beginning of a training block and at the end, the feeling can be sooo much different. And then, look down and see what you've accomplished. And that dessert... Nothing like running downhill 3, 4, 5... miles. And while you do it, don't forget to open your arms, open your arms! Open your arms, feel the freedom, fly down, feel free! Such a great feeling!

    Checking out old videos on running uphill. I think uphill is my weakness and there's not even a flat 5k here in the Appalachian Mts. It's nice to hear you talking about your focus on Pikes Peak in 2019, knowing now that you'll win the marathon on 2020 and 21.

    On arm swing technique: shorten the pendulum by increasing the bend at the elbow, and come closer to mid-line, heart to collarbone height. You can swing faster this way with the shortened pendulum.This most importantly decreases energy expenditure. Swing from the shoulder with rib cage rotation. Just watch almost all top distance runners, especially the Africans, they have way less than 90° elbow bend. I made this change to my arm carriage/swing. My arms feel so much better and have less fatigue as well as my legs in the longer distances. Oh yeah, and I run much faster! Works well hill climbing too...keep pumping right Seth!?

    Thanks so much for the hill running tips! I always wondered about foot placement going uphill, whether I should land all the way down to my heels or not. Very few training videos mention that! I’m definitely going to work on that since I have mostly hilly areas to run. The Seattle area is not flat! I run both road and trails so this will be fun to try. My uphill battle is running more mileage in a hilly area without injury! My family uphill battle, is getting all my kids through college! Yikes! Start saving for your boys now!

    Up! Amazing video! Battling a strained calf muscle and the flu, forced me to take 2 weeks of. Been rehabing ny calf everyday and lifting weights daily, next training block starts end of the month, so now I need to build my mileage back up before it starts. Have a 25km mountain race here in Korea the end of April. I'll het it done, don't want to rush my recovery and cause more harm, so I'm restraining myself from running too much :) Thanks for a great video! Injuries always make me more motivated and grateful to be able bodied, and to have the will to always be better :)

    I’m currently fighting an uphill battle with AP world history to get an A.... it’s a tough course.
    In running I’m in a current slump of what I suspect is iron deficiency. I’ve been feeling super fatigued, always take unintentional naps, and consistently can’t hit my splits in workouts whereas I used to be comfortably hitting my splits or below them. Getting a blood test today

    My uphill battle is father time at almost 55 coming from the blood and guts high milage and mass intervals of the 1980's . Plus repetitive factory work for years my hip joint in constant pain that can barely move. But, just want to run again without a limp.

    • @SethJamesDeMoor

    • @robertricker2727
      @robertricker2727 5 років тому

      @@SethJamesDeMoor No, I was a 1600 and 3200 in hs and 10,000 in college. Did hard speed ladders and repeats in hs but ran 3 times a day. College higher milage did things like 20 by 400 repeats sub65. 10 by 1600 repeats sub 5. Did my 200s at 26 to 32 seconds. Ran my overdistance at close to 6
      Had the thought what would Pre do? Wish known about the training today might not got burnt out.

    I have been blessed over the years to be relatively injury free. Sure, there have been a few bumps in the road regarding that but an uphill battle right now is definitely the weather here in Manitoba with current temperatures of around -25 degrees Celsius as a daytime high. That does test the resolve to get out there but with smart layering it can be done to run smart and be safe. Temps are on the rise in a few days though. I don't obsess about cadence, but I like reviewing those metrics after the fact to check in stuff on like "Did I keep my ground contact time and thus turnover consistent even towards the end of a run?" or "How was my cadence for these certain paces in my interval workout?" or "Did it slow for those later reps?" This feeds back into my mental check-ins during a run just to remind my self to keep those "FAST FEET!" and "PUMP THOSE ARMS!" I stole that last one from you. 😉

    Thanks for the tips! Going to put them to use at the Horsetooth Half. Hills are not a huge strength of mine but I love that race anyway. QOD My uphill battle is deciding which and when to run my first marathon. I’d planned on Colfax but I love that half so much and the BB10k a weekish after that the thought of “missing out” on those for the marathon is a bummer. Entered the NYC lottery and that race really excites me so I think if I don’t get into it I will have to re-evaluate for another race that excites me. And I think taking advantage of living at altitude by doing a sea level first marathon may be wiser.

      All of this useful technical running gear is made in the USA and factory direct.

      High Quality Gear on a Budget
      I admit it. I’m cheap. It puts me into cardiac arrest to see a pair of shorts with 50 grams of nylon in them for $100! I’ve been known to frequent races based on the ratio of entry fee to technical tee-shirt value. You know I love those free-shoe races. If I can pick up a nylon hat or a good pair of gloves while running the local 10k, I’m in! I’ve been known to hand-sew my ratty tights prior to races and tie-die my racing shirts to hide the stains. That’s why this BR Sportswear sale is such a great opportunity. I could equip my whole club with hats for the price of a pair of shoes. Look at your closet and see what holes you can fill for the next season or so!
      One of the things I like about running is that it’s relatively inexpensive. You just strap on your shoes and go. There are no pads, sticks, balls to buy and no fields, rinks, or facilities to rent. You don’t need technical clothing, but even a cheapskate like me appreciates the value of technical clothes. Trust me; the downside in discomfort and painful rashes is an overwhelming motivator to get out of those cotton sweat pants and into some quality performance gear.
      The value of technical gear
      After years of running my collection is still a mishmash, but it is 100% technical from the socks to the balaclava - and I love it. Yes, I even have technical underwear and I’ll run the next race that has the courage to give out Coolmax briefs!
      Technical fabric doesn’t hold the sweat, it wicks it away from your body. This way you won’t get chaffing and chilling on your runs. The technical stuff dries much faster and lasts for a long time. In the summer it keeps you cooler and in the winter it makes a great base layer - keeping you dry and cutting the wind, protecting your sensitive points.
      I travel frequently on business and the technical stuff is a big help. It doesn’t take up any room and its light. I can stuff socks, shirt and shorts into one of my shoes. It dries quickly so that I don’t have to pack wet stuff from my morning run or wear wet stuff the next day.
      I know it’s hot and steamy today, but winter is right around the corner. At 50% off you save the most on big-ticket items like running suits and pullovers. Think ahead, it will be frosty before you know it and you’ll be wishing you had taken advantage of the savings now, when available.
      BR Sportswear is giving away a knit hat with each order, and you can never have enough fuzzy hats when the wind begins to howl in New England.

      Now’s the time to equip your team and your kids.
      Does your club need racing singlets? Buy a crate of them from BR Sportswear and save your dues for more beer after the next club run. Does your event need promotional, prize or giveaway material? Buy a few boxes and let the savings go to the bottom line. It’s a win-win situation. You can stock up now at an incredible discount and have them silk-screened when you need them. Here’s your chance to be a big hero at the next club meeting when you show how you only spent half the budget.
      Since I have been converted to the technical gear bandwagon I have also realized that there is a huge applicability to youth sports of all kinds. I tell my kids (when I’m coaching soccer) to put on a synthetic base layer. This is a great opportunity for you folks with little (or not so little) kids to get them some good performance clothing.
      I speak from personal experience. I bought my 12-year old a plain long-sleeve Coolmax shirt and she wears it at every soccer, softball, and field hockey game. She loves it, especially when it is rainy or cold. Take a look at the gaiters and wrist-overs for those cold fall days at the field. At these prices you can equip your whole team.
      Holidays are only five months away. You could check off some boxes here and save some dough on the nieces and nephews. Spread the technical love. You can wax rhapsodic about the merits of technical clothing and then segue right into your favorite marathon story over holiday dinner.

    I like how you are doing the Pikes peak assent and then the marathon. I think that will transition well was that part of your strategy? Also liked the skipping or hopping drills you were doing. I started doing those in my living room. It is kind of a work out if you do them for a while.

    I do struggle with hills. My heart rate spikes and my pace slows down drastically. I don't know what to do to become bettee at it, just do more? I have to say that it is rare when I do hills because I simply don't have them nearby. But is that the key? Just do more or can I do a workout to help me improve?

    Amazing video- great content, great videography, great editing! I think you and Jamison Michael are the best in terms of those 3 parameters...keep it up! As for cadence, I have a video that explains how motion sensors work with regards to running power meters, but the discussion applies to watches & smartphones too. In a nutshell, along with some algorithms, the accelerometer+gyroscope in the watch can compute when you’ve come to the end of your arm swing...and your arm cadence matches your leg cadence.

    I got two Raidlight backpacks recently: Ultra Olmo 12 and Trail XP4. They look very good, but I'm a bit disappointed. Heavy, yeah. Almost twice as heavy as my other backpacks. And I don't really understand why they attach the waist belt not to the straps, but to pockets on the straps. The straps get crammed under the belt.
    My favorite backpacks are made by Terra Nova. Lightweight, spacious and very comfortable. And yours?

    • @SethJamesDeMoor
      @SethJamesDeMoor  5 років тому

      Terra Nova?? I’ve never heard of them. I agree that Raidlight is heavy, I like my vest but I’m interested in others as well, maybe Terra Nova!

      Seth James DeMoor They don't make vests: www.terra-nova.co.uk/packs-rucksacks-poles/lightweight-packs-rucksacks/ Trailrunners may miss bottle pockets on straps, but for run commuters they are perfect.

    I have entered for a 65k mountain race - with some serious up hills. Pretty rough terrain. I really suck at running uphill and also the altitude normally gets me. I think I have a mental block due to a DNF on a similar route. How do you overcome that. I do hill training in my program and try to include hilly terrain where ever I can but I get to a massive hill and feel like crying. Basically have hill anxiety I think :)

      When I’m old and slow ; )
      Maybe in 2-4 years, I just know that if I race it the knees will bark at me, trying to save that downhill speed for some other races like CCC. It’s tempting trust me. I’ve got unfinished business in the Ascent ⛰⛰

    • @suzannelaburt2641
      @suzannelaburt2641 5 років тому +1

      Unfinished business...Hoo Yah!!!
      I hear you about barking knees. There's a trail race in Vernon NJ called Running with The Devil, 3, 6,12 hour, you choose the time to run up & down the Diablo Mtn Bike/Ski trail full loop or half loop as many times as you can until time is up. I can't do it because my old knees would not just bark on the descents...they would curse me then make me pay a hefty price 😉

    Hey Seth, when I use Strava I noticed they give a GAP(Grade adjusted pace) value for uphill running and was curious if you notice this or use it. If so, how much merit do you give their GAP values as I'm not sure if they take into account altitude, technicality ect.
