    First Impression Summary:
Test Vehicle: 2023 Jeep Compass Trailhawk
    Exterior Color: Billet Silver Metallic
    Interior Color: Black/Ruby Red
Options: Paint Color ($495), Driver Assist Group ($2,640), Trailhawk Elite Group ($3,235), and Sun and Sound Group ($2,580)
MSRP as tested: $46,290 (With Delivery/Destination)
Pros: Trailhawk capability, refined exterior/interior design, modern technology, improved turbocharged engine
Cons: Noisy engine whine, Limited cargo room, high prices of desirable trims
Exterior Style: The Compass looks like a mini-Cherokee and aligns with the brand. Styling looks more premium, and a wide variety of trims allow buyers options to fit their taste.
Interior: Refined with high quality materials. Paired with modern tech like wireless charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it will provide a comfortable space for drivers and passengers.
Performance: The big news for 2023 is the introduction of a new 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine rated at 200 horsepower and 221-pound feet of torque. It’s quicker and a big improvement, however, it still sounds coarse when pushed. It’s also agile and highly capable off-road with a standard 4x4 across the line-up. Opt for the Trailhawk model for the most off-road capable model.
Family Friendly: While the seats are comfortable, it is a compact SUV. Three kids will fit across the back seat, but they’ll be a bit tight. Cargo area is limited to 27.2 cu. ft behind the seats and 59.8 cu.ft. with the seats down. It’s average to low for the class and will fill up quickly. This would make a great second vehicle or a nice option for younger teen drivers.
Value: Prices range from $28,000 - $39,000 and at its base it feels like a good value, however if you want all the features and benefits highlighted above, you’ll be at the top end of the range. At $36k you’re in the same territory of the larger Cherokee and I start to question the overall value. My Trailhawk test model checked in at $46,290 which feels like a lot of money for a small compact SUV like this.
    Final Statement:
The Compass has come a long way since it was first introduced… so far that it’s hard to believe they share the same name. It’s a great entry level vehicle for Jeep that is versatile and worthy of the trail-rated badging. The new engine is a big improvement for overall power but could still use a little refinement when it comes to noise. After driving both the Limited and Trailhawk, it's fair to say there is a Compass to suit a variety of lifestyle preferences. Be cautious of your options as prices can get up there.
