Melbourne's greatest rock band in the 1975-90 period. We went every Friday to a live venue. Such Talent. Played My Friends 21 st. The energy of Stephen C is amazing. Hall of fame Rock band. Such clever tunes. Good to see Jet paving their own way too
Danced the skin off my feet to these guys. Watched at Bombay Rock when Graham Parker regretted inviting Steve Cummings and Andrew Pendelbury on stage at the end of their show to jam 'White Honey' and they blew The Rumour off stage. Parker was visibly agitated and looked to be desperately trying to usher them back off stage. No disrespect to Parker but it was amusing to watch. The Sports were just soooo good.
THESPORTS WERE THE BEST BAND LIVE IN AUSSIE ROCK THEY BLEW AWY EVERY SUPPORT BAND OUT THERE,,,,STEVE CUMMINGS A GREAT LEAD SINGER ( Even billy joel was influenced by Steve...look at his YOU MAYBE RIGHT clip..his singing style and gestures are all steve cummings....Billy was mainly behind a piano but in this song he does a good steve cummings.A LOT OF BANDS WERE TALKING ABOUT THE SPORTS....UK band...MADNESS ADMITTED BEING BLOWN AWAY BY THE PERFORMANCE OF SPORTS.ON THEIR TOUR
Bombay Rock was my second home in in the late 70s, i was definitely there!! Great memories of many fabulous bands ❤❤❤ it saddens me that Bombay Rock is now an indoor golf range 😒
Funny I read this just now. I just came from watching a very early Reyne interview (pre Guy) in Aussie Crawl where he was asked why people compared Aussie Crawl to the Sports. It seemed obvious to me way back even then that he was influenced by the Sports' style. I thought he was so similar to Stephen it was almost copying. James seemed offended at the question and said they were nothing alike.
Saw them 4 or 5 times in Sydney from the Royal Antler, Glider Room, Stage Door Tavern & Selina's - never less than a 10/10 show. Absolute legends. Have some interesting vinyl in the collection EPs etc....Steve has still got it if you ever get to see him live.
@@Lanewaymusic Gotcha but I did see them in Queensland/ Northern NSW a few times. I think maybe at Coolangatta. I saw stacks of bands around Coolie and the Tweed area back in the day. Almost everyone from that era who played there.
I may have been in that crowd with a few others, locals ruled then & looked after each other, not now.fisho,s was ok fockwit bouncers tho.playroom was dark & dinjy.penthouse was always fun,Twain's, beach road, the chevron hotel, everyone knew everyone then.
@@CONTRABANDqld yep dead on, before March 1980 that was when Suddenly was released and Paul had been replaced by Iain McLennan, who only did the Album tour as he became unwell with hep and was replace by Freddie. Interesting also is that b4 Freddie joined Red Symons did the Album tour of keys and left at the end of it.
I discovered them in my teens. I am 61 now and still listen to them on a weekly basis. What a blessing this band was and is.
Really good video quality for circa 1979.
Powerhouse performance. Stephen throws everything at it. What at an amazing time in music.
What an amazing time in Melbourne and Australia!
Doesn't get much more Melbourne than the Sports at Bombay rock

You may well get a bit of an argument that it was Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons. But it would be a very close run thing.

Ahh Bombay Rock! Saw so many there... We truly were spoilt here in Australia... Mind you I still wonder how I got in being under 18
Happy 66 birthday to Stephen Cummings.
GREAT LIVE BAND !! Saw them in Sydney
Lucky you!
Mighty show, early one for Martin, very transitional, with new songs intermingled with older tunes from Reckless still featuring!
Fantastic video and sound... and a reminder that it was probably a mistake to drop Ed Niven on the keyboards!
Brilliant stuff innit
Wasn't there a bombay rock on the Gold Coast back in the 80's. I'm sure i saw Aussie Crawl there
This was shown on BBC's Old Grey Whistle Test to a positive reaction.
Bombay Rock, venue at the heart of the film Death in Brunswick
WOW!
Hidden gem
This is great - thanks heaps for posting.
If you’re wondering who influenced James Reyne’s vocal style, watch this!
Had that very thought
I always thought Cummins sounded a little like mick jagger

Always thought Reyne sounded more influenced by John Fogerty than Cummings.
Looks, sings and acts like a mixture of James Reyne and Elvis Costello. Nice!
Happy birthday Stephen Cummings

Steve hasn't got it anymore .... He unfortunately had a stroke a while back .... he is recovering ...
@@geoffkinna9166 I heard he was doing a few gigs around Melbourne from last year to promote the new album?🤞

If that's Bombay Rock at Surfer's Paradise there's a high chance I was in the crowd for this. But it's so long ago.
Bombay rock Melbourne david

It's Bombay Rock in Brunswick, Melbourne 😊
PS
It does not get much better than this.
Hi nylo ...berty
Very strange person is Steve Cummings.
All power to him. A star.
Really? Very strange comment, he's one of the nicest, warmest, people i have ever met
what year was this recorded ?
We believe around 1982
Before 1980, Freddy was drummer from 81, and that's Paul on drums

I actually used to work with Paul as crew, I'm also a left handed drummer so he's a big influence on playing today
