    First things first before you even touch your clutch, you put your foot on the rear brake, and the first 10 times you pop the clutch, hit the rear brake, so it becomes an instinct to press the brake, if you feel like you are going too high, saved me from looping a number of times

    • @WinstonWheelington

      Some good tips mate - noone wants to loop their bike

      I have a problem with this. For some reason, my foot does not naturally cover the back brake. I must put extra effort to raise my foot over it.
      Is it possible that my suspension needs adjusted?

    This is one of the best videos to follow for a beginner. In the same day I moved from beginner to intermediate/advanced. Just picked up my new to me 2017 KTM 690 Enduro R last night. Want to master this part of wheeling so I can use wheel up techniques off road. Thanks for the video.

    How I learned to wheelie, start off by popping bike up and hitting back brake do that about 20-30 times or more, balance point starts as your forks straighten with the road so if you have good back brake control you can always monitor your front forks and this will give you confidence to pull back more also ease into the drop back don't be snappy on throttle very smooth on 4 strokes you can allow the engine braking to bring you down back brake isn't as important but u must have it as instinct because engine braking will only do so much. On the DRZ400 you practice in 2nd gear around 30-35 kmh don't practice wheelies in first gear maybe to pop up but its actually the most dangerous the torque is way more forgiving in 2nd. Lots of seat time, throttle control and you'll have it.

    Recently saw someone's video where they mentioned using the front break as a way to compress the front suspension. Then immediately after letting off the front break clutch and gas.. Works like a charm. wish I learned about this earlier. I don't like pulling back on the bars so much so I went straight to stand up wheelies so I could compress just by pumping my legs.

    So I literally learned to wheelie about 3 weeks ago (on a 350excf). And within the first week I was already fender scraping...The way I taught my self how to wheelie was; 1st gear..bring it up real high..hit the breaks..(repeat until hitting the break feels natural)..then start learning balance point..after you have an idea for the balance point, you can start going past it (to fender scrape)... It was VERY easy to learn. I did it on some nice grippy dirt so there would be optimal traction and if I ever fell of the bike, it wouldn't get all scratched up.

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому +1

      Awesome bro sounds like your making great progress. Unfortunately some of us (like me!) take a bit longer to learn to wheelie, as our balls aren't as big ;) Also it can be a bit more intimidating when you don't want to drop your flash bike on the concrete!

    Hi mate, nice video! I have a big problem covering the rear brake with my foot. looks like the pedal is to high and i am struggling to keep my foot on it. have you adjusted your rear brake pedal before doing wheelies?

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому

      Hey man, I had the same thing on my drz400. To answer your question - No :) I had the same problem, and while it might feel awkward at first I had to get used to it - and over time you WILL get used to it and it will feel natural. Your foot will have to arch upwards a little bit all the time and might even press on the brake a bit but not enough to push it down. If you sit further back in your seat your foot will not cover the brake as much and it will feel more comfortable. Try that as a short term fix till you get used to the feeling. You can also adjust the brake lever by screwing out the nut by the brake footpeg - there should be tutorials online but I will make a vid soon showing you how to do it :)

    Clutch to get it up? My old WR450 and now KTM 500 bike do not any need viagra to get it up lol, they do power wheelies...
    Using the clutch to get it up feels way to scary and risky of looping to me... Think I will try using the method other reccomend of keeping one foot at rear break and practice breaking down the wheelies to work up muscle memory first before using clutch to get it down again fast if it gets to high.

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  6 років тому

      Sounds good bro. Clutch wheelies are safer though as you don't need to give it as much gas, reducing the risk you could flip the bike. Definitely practice the foot brake though!!

    How do you avoid crashing when your front wheel comes down? I've seen a lot of videos where the front tire comes down straight like it's supposed to do, and then they start swirling from side to side really fast. What causes this and how do I prevent it when learning a wheelie?

    • @s.a.h.d6575
      @s.a.h.d6575 7 років тому

      ive only ever had that happen over 100kmph, anything under that seems fine, even iff ya crossed up a bit, even at over 100 when it did happen to me, you just go full throttle and flick the clutch and lean back, it takes enough weight off the front to correct itself, but gotta be ready for it, just make sure your wheel is straight as possible when you come down, a steering damper also helps a heap...

      @WinstonWheelington  7 років тому

      Hey bro.. never man.. you shouldn't be going through that many clutches I am not sure what you are doing. You should need no break in miles at all. Motorbike clutches are heavy duty and are designed to take punishment.. I suggest you go see your mechanic about a faulty bike

    does your 690 chug in 2nd below say 17-18mph? I have the evo 1 tune i think. But it chugs kinda bad at low rpm and is the opposite of what you think a big 690 would be like at low rpms.

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому

      Hey Ryan - cool plane! Mine does the same and I wouldn't worry about it. Since its a single that means that the ride is not as smooth as it's only igniting on one cyclinder. But, if you had a 4 cylinder for example, it would be a lot smoother in lower rpms, since it's igniting more often. Short answer: don't worry about it it's perfectly normal :)

      well aparently the cops didnt like that i was on an parkinglot way out in the bush and practiced i got told off and got an verbal warning sigh no more wheelies for me until i find another good spot i guess XD (next time they catch me doing weelies they might take my license)

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому

      Oh ok that sucks bro .. definitely find a new spot! Bro I won't lie wheelies are scary, if they weren't everyone would know how to do them! Just make sure you start small and take baby steps and you'll get used to the feeling, it won't feel natural at all - your wheels are meant to stay on the ground!! If you're struggling take a friend for encouragement - it's a lot easier to learn them with someone else :) Remember to cover the rear brake and start getting used to it once you wheelies are getting really high - it's impossible to loop if you know how to use the rear brake properly :)

    • @fiskare921
      @fiskare921 8 років тому

      yeah, aparently there is a no tollerance on wheelies here had i been on a road that could been accesed by anyone they would have taken my license directly. got an verbal warning and told to find another place with fences around (lol) and i was only able to do power wheelies in 1st gear i felt more in controll and they came up smoothly. but i couldnt get my body to either release the clutch fast enough or i would chop of the gas or didnt dare to gas enough. so never was able to lift the wheel by clutchup. stupid bodyXD awell need to try to get in on the local rallycross track when they not train and knock myself out.

    I don't want to do power wheelies, cause i think its better to control with the clutch

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому +1

      Hey man. I don't actually know because I don't look at the speedo. If you start small with your wheelies, then you wont flip. SLOWLY get higher and higher over time. When they start getting pretty high start covering the rear break and learning to use it to bring the front back down. Its impossible to flip your bike if you tap the rear break!! In second gear at about 30 kph clutch up at about 4-6k RPMs. If it doesnt wheelie go a bit higher in the RPM range. Good luck :)

    • @Deni-nw3jd

    I´m practicing wheelies since half a year now - everytime I ride out. (not real practice, just playing wile riding)
    The from you called "Balancepoint" doesn´t even look Close to what I´ve seen on many other Videos.
    Also the fact that your Buddy didn´t film it, is (at least to me) a confirmation of my thoughts.

    SUICIDE SILENCE. Nice choice bro.
    But I must say, ya gotta really beat into someone to control that rear brake. On my GSXR1000 - The power wheelies in first are cool and all, but I'll be at 167km/h doing a power wheelie.
    In second I can do wheelies around 90km/h with the clutch and I find balance point a lot easier with the feathering of the throttle. Still learning how to control the rear brake but I must say it's definitely a useful tool to bring it back down. Much nicer than dumping the throttle and throwing the rear out!
    Cool video bro, I'll be tuning in for more!

    Im on a 125cc yamaha xt 125 r i do almost 12 o clocks but im too dumb to shift into second so if i want to shift into secon gear i just shift without the clutch and before that i go back with the throttle?

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому

      Yo dude if your doing 12 oclocks your getting on better than me at this stage! If you want to shift from first to second do this. Do your wheelie in first gear, then before you want to change into second, tuck your foot underneath the gear lever and apply pressure upwards. Then all you need to do is really quickly throttle off while keep pressure on the gear lever, then quickly throttle back on - it will change from first to second when you quickly throttle of because of the pressure you apply to the gear lever. You can practice this just driving around before you try it in a wheelie ! Hope this helps

    • @ThePyrrokiller
      @ThePyrrokiller 8 років тому

      WinstonWheelington Thanks for the Reply man i will try it but like today after school i did a solid first gear wheelie from 5-30 km/h pulled the clutch shifted and almost crashed because the motorcycle was so unstable will it be the same when i shift with no clutch?

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому

      to be honest bro changing gear shouldn't throw you out too much, maybe you are over thinking it! Practice no-clutch shifting without doing a wheelie, but when you can do it comfortably, try it again but this time doing a small wheelie. Once you get the hang of it, try it at 12 oclock. Give it a go and let me know how you get on!

    • @bart8601
      @bart8601 8 років тому

      if you wheelie in second or third you have to be alot more carefull on your brake i kind of drag the brake, in first just go really slow and try to get it as high up as possible and tap the brake to go down and did that 100 times or something thats how i learned to get to balance point.

    • @WinstonWheelington
      @WinstonWheelington  8 років тому

      Hey man. You still use the clutch to wheelie the bike. What I was saying was - if you want to change gears in the middle of a wheelie, you don't need to pull the clutch in. You just push the lever up into the next gear without use of the clutch. If you are still confused watch my FAQ video which explains how to change gear mid wheelie in more detail. Cheers, Winston

      Hey dude. I never really looked but yeah probably about 4-5k. Try not to get too hung up staring at your rev gauge. Instead look in front of you before you pull the wheelie, and do whatever feels natural. Usually you just need more gas, keep going until you can get the front up!
