Not entirely sure if its helpful for you as well, but I know my dad absolutely loves the scarf I got him last year (its warm, soft, and has a print which looks like olive, navy, and grey cubes, this way it matches with everything he wears), as well as the blue sweater I got him. Things like that, which have a use, but may have been nicer than something they'd buy for themselves, are often appreciated, and will likely remind them of it for a long time to come.
Its easiest, and nice to gift something they can use every day, or something jokingly.
If you are going to get socks, which have a reputation of being "that one gift for men", get the super nice, wool lined warm ones you can get at tourist spots. Worst case, you can also just ask sortoff indirectly, the "a friend of mine doesn't want to gift her dad perfume or socks again this year, but doesn't know what to get, do you know anything?".
But normally, I'd just recommend to think of the person, what they dislike (because this narrows down a lot of options), what they have a lot of (they may either really like this, if they buy it for themselves, or definitely not want it, since they have too many), what might improve their life a little (do they hate using screwdrivers, but often need one? Electric screwdriver, or a gift card for it - giftcards are great if they have a message behind it).
This became quite long, but, I can say that it is really true, that if you think of the person you are buying for (really think of who they are, their interests, what they are to you), then you definitely will find something the person would be happy to recieve, if only because you thought of them. Good luck!

So it was perfect to keep warm. I also gave them a cookbook for Christmas by one of my fave chefs, the pioneer woman, who had a variety of recipes from meals to drinks to party snack ideas
