Twitter integration was the centerpiece of a World of Warcraft patch during its 6th expansion. Fast forward to the 10th expansion; suddenly, Twitter started charging hefty fees. Blizzard said "we're not paying that" and completely axed Twitter integration. I'm surprised Nintendo took this long to do the same.
I remember when that was the only way to get your screencaps off of the switch. You'd have to post them to FB or Twitter before Nintendo created their convoluted QR code system
Pretty much everyone is sad this is going away, but it's pretty clear the reason is Twitter (or "X")'s fault. They changed how much it cost to allow third party apps/things to connect to Twitter, so much so that many are dropping it (I think it's $50,000 to $100,000 a month?). It just isn't worth it, and for Nintendo I 100% understand. The whole "App that syncs to your account screenshots and etc." idea is what Nintendo should do for the next console, that way you can use whatever social media you want, be it Twitter or Facebook or just in friend DMs. Now we just have the QR code thing, which is pretty tedious.

I really liked Miiverse. I remember posting a screenshot to it in Majora’s Mask 3D, asking the community for guidance with getting one of the fairies in the Goron Temple, coming back in an hour or so, and seeing the tips others left. It felt like getting help from a friend, rather than looking up some guide online, and it didn’t spoil anything else in the game. Unlike a guide, this presented me with exactly the information I wanted, rather than all the solutions to the all the puzzles in the area. I just wish it had been faster, and easier to navigate (on every platform including mobile).
The only reason I used it was to get my screenshots off of my switch, but now that you can transfer to your phone with a QR code, it's not really a big deal to me. Twitter was more convenient though.
You go to a website, and it's set up in a way that's easy for humans to read You go to the API and you get the same information, but in a way that's easy for a computer to read That's pretty much it. It doesn't actually have to be a website, it can be anything, but that's the least scary version of what an API is
I used Twitter for like a week. Someone I had on FB complained I posted too much, and that I should make a Twitter. So I did, and linked it to my FB and to post on FB everytime I posted on Twitter, and I posted more, and faster than ever.thus leading to more posts on FB, pissing that individual off even more. Malicious compliance is your friend. Then I got off Twitter and never went back. I don't blame Nintendo. I wouldn't want to be linked to X now either, especially with Elon doing his shit. The feature would be amazing with other platforms, or as you said, just an easier way to get my clips and pics online. I'd love to share with Discord friends more easily.
Twitter, Discord, Reddit, the Facebook crap and the other stinky sites all blow. I'm an avid commenter on ReVanced and would happily migrate if I could, but UA-cam and every social site's UI, UX, community and privacy policies are incredibly gross. Really wishing the internet could return to its 2010 backup.
That's not even inaccurate, that's literally what happened to all three consoles. They're not paying the exorbitant API costs when the share feature used to be free.
This is literally the only thing I use Twitter for. Yes, it's a disappointment. It made TotK 10x more fun to be able to just quickly upload my machines and shenanigance, and link them to my friend on discord. I hope the switch successor has a good alternative
Honestly I hope the next generation console has something adjacent to miiverse. Just about every single thing that I sent over to Twitter through my Nintendo switch never got any traction because Twitter is filled to the brim with everything else thus it gets drowned out.
Deleted my Twitter account after elon fired most of the security team so losing this feature doesn't bother me. PlayStation is losing this as well for the same reason. Hopefully better social media sites finally take over.
Completely fair that some people are disappointed, I just don't care because... it's Twitter. Never had an account, never want to get one. Not an elitist or anything, I just don't think I'd like it based on... everything XD
It’s exorbitantly expensive to use an api nowadays. You can always get your screenshots and videos off of your sd card arlo! Makes it pretty easy if you have an adapter
3:40 "We all complain about Twitter and we talk about going somewhere else but we don't. We just don't." You're speaking for yourself there, Arlo. Almost everyone I know has deleted their Twitter and moved to Mastodon or BlueSky. You know, Fediverse stuff. Or sometimes they don't move at all, they just delete Twitter and spend more time on Discord.
I don’t know what you’re doing wrong with your phone connecting to your Switch, but I’ve never had any issues with it working. It takes FOREVER to connect to the Switch, so it feels like it’s taking me minutes to download a single 30 second clip. But it always works.
Funnily enough, this is why I originally even made a Twitter-account. Ever since Elon Musk took over and I decided to remove the site from my brower's bookmarks, I've been barely on Twitter anymore though. Sad to see this go, but what can you do. If Twitter wants to shoot itself in the foot even more, so be it.
To this day, I still don't understand Twitter. I think I like Facebook because it's actively worse. You get a handful of old memes, and some crap that some of your friends are up to, and that's it. Twitter just doesn't seem enjoyable at all. The only time I ever use twitter is because I want to occasionally see if a person has something to say about something that I can't find anywhere else. That's it.
5:00 very surprised to here this. I've used it quite frequently and it works 100% of the time. Simply connect your phone to the switch as a WIFI access point and scan the QR to enter the site the switch manufactures for you. Then tap and hold a video to download or for a screenshot you can select download all images on this page. Really not sure how you couldn't get this to work
Elon Musk killed Twitter. If there's one thing to be disappointed in, it's that. Nintendo is just responding to a long series of changes that destroyed the platform by walking away from it.
I don’t know why you’ve had so much trouble getting pictures and videos from the switch to your phone. I do it often and I find it very easy. It’s essentially just airdropping between the switch and phone. You should give that another chance, I’ve never had an issue.
I'm kinda glad in a way. I play a lot of Splatoon 3. Hopefully this change flushes out or drowns out the huge toxicity of Plaza Posts. The community side has been unnecessarily political in a game about cartoony cephalopods shooting each other with colorful ink. Plus I never had a Twitter account, so I can finally make posts
Yeah I'm with everyone else, Nintendo's making kind of a reasonable decision on this one. Twitter or whatever the bleep it's called now shot themselves in the foot with their various new ideas since Musk started running the company.
The team that makes Splatoon and Animal Crossing are the only ones who seem to know how to use the Nintendo Switch Online app, but it makes the experience that tiny bit better because of it. I have so many images of Smallfry on my phone. Emotional support salmon.
Sorry Arlo, just cause you still love Twitter doesn’t mean the rest of us do. It’s not the biggest social media platform. It didn’t even dethrone Facebook. If Twitter was so important then how come no one even knew this was a feature until it was gone?
This isn't about accessing twitter since you were never able to do it from the switch regardless, it's about having an easy way to share screenshots and videos
This is probably one of those topics you should've done more research on. I dont think being intimidated by an acronym is the way to go when you're trying to throw your hat into a discussion revolving around it. Pretty much, Twitter made it incredibly expensive for companies to the point in which it was only doing more harm than good. While the convenience being gone is a sad thing, its in the best interest for any company to move away from that app since its leeching hard.
I'm not upset. This isn't Nintendo's fault at all. Twitter made so many changes that Nintendo says it's not worth it anymore. Sony and Xbox dipped out for similar reasons.
I mostly used the Twitter intergation to repost to my Tumblr mod blog where I actually still get interactions on my posts (with a third party tool to download the videos). I don't really use Facebook at all these days and that's why it was easy to choose Twitter instead because I still use Twitter to contact people and find info on certain things.
I’m hoping they’ll add the functionality to Bluesky or threads or soemthing cause this was one of the best features the switch had. It was always nice seeing other people’s clips uploaded and it was the easiest way to transfer stuff even with the QR thing
Transferring screenshots and videos from your switch to your phone is pretty consistent for me, but depending on your phone it may have features that cause problems if you have data turned on while you do it. If you turn off data before doing it then it may fix your issues
You know what would be awesome? If a government (that supports basic freedom of speech) hosted its own public forum instead of relying on for-profit companies. In the same exact way that physical mail or libraries are services that don't necessarily make money, I would be willing to have some of my taxes going into fund a public access online space. It doesn't have to be the best out there, it just has to be a solid foundation that for-profit companies must be better than if they want to compete. Some kind of buffer against the whole "race to the bottom" we see in all online services because there isn't anyone big and powerful enough to even attempt real competition.

While its probably not easier, you can connect your undocked switch to your computer and get all your files there. Even sorted in folders by game.
You say I don’t know a whole lot man. If you’re going to make a video how hard is it to look up what you’re talking about? Just something I’ve noticed happen more frequently
The QR code thing is super cool tbf
You can just put your Switch SD card into your PC to transfer them. That was always an alternative.
@@WyattporterIt's a little convoluted considering most phones don't have an QR code reader on default
@@wiltfoster5386 Most phone OSs made in the last decade have QR readers built into the default camera app; opening your camera isn't very convoluted
It really isn't that convoluted
Honestly I hope Nintendo is the first of many companies to move entirely away from Twitter
Xbox and PlayStation already did
*last
It's far from the first.
Nintendo is going out of business soon, who cares
@technobladeleakedclips1827 ??? Do you realize they company isn't in comption with Xbox or Playstation. They rival Disney in toys and merch sales that can fuel making a cinematic universe even if no one goes to see any of the movies
Can we at least get a Nintendo approved app for yoinking pics & vids to post on any of our social media? The interface on the Switch was kinda garbage. (I've had a lot of good usefulness out of SwitchBuddy, but that's 3rd party)
Why on earth would I want another bloatware app to install on my phone when I can just plug in the SD card via an adapter and use the file manager?
@@mjc0961 instant gratification?
Convenience is determined by the user's preferences.
@@mjc0961You really really think that removing the SD card and plugging on the PC is easier than uploading them directly from the switch to an app?
Also let me save you some time, you don't have to remove the SD card, just connect the switch itself using a USB cable
It is.
It's called Twitter.
Put the microSD card in your computer and upload it yourself, it's legitimately faster than using the Twitter sharing.
@@UltimaKeyMaster You have to be trolling
Miiverse coming back???
no fucking chance
The copium
Why do you refuse to call it X?
You go to a website, and it's set up in a way that's easy for humans to read
You go to the API and you get the same information, but in a way that's easy for a computer to read
That's pretty much it.
Nintendo's thing is increasing net happiness in the world.
X formerly twitter decreases net happiness.
I don't see this as a loss.
I can picture Nintendo responding in a Rorschach voice, "I didn't lose support from X, THEY LOST SUPPORT FROM ME."
That's not even inaccurate, that's literally what happened to all three consoles. They're not paying the exorbitant API costs when the share feature used to be free.
If Miiverse comes out, i would be down .
X raise price. The market has answered.
quit twitter months ago, it really isn't that hard.
Well Switch 2 is gonna have X integration so its fine.
Deleted my Twitter account after elon fired most of the security team so losing this feature doesn't bother me. PlayStation is losing this as well for the same reason.
Hopefully better social media sites finally take over.
What? really? source please that's the first time I've heard about it😯
Completely fair that some people are disappointed, I just don't care because... it's Twitter. Never had an account, never want to get one. Not an elitist or anything, I just don't think I'd like it based on... everything XD
Idk what’s up with Arlo but I have never had an issue with the QR code and I use it regularly.
It’s exorbitantly expensive to use an api nowadays. You can always get your screenshots and videos off of your sd card arlo! Makes it pretty easy if you have an adapter
3:40 "We all complain about Twitter and we talk about going somewhere else but we don't. We just don't."
You're speaking for yourself there, Arlo.
Arlo, may I recommend Bluesky? If people with followings hop on it, it'll become a lot more populated and a viable alternative
I deleted my Twitter for a Facebook. Had my Twitter account for almost 10 years, and the drama just went too far. I don't miss it.
It's a gaming device, not a cell phone, or PC, or tablet or the hundred other things you can access Twitter on.
This isn't about accessing twitter since you were never able to do it from the switch regardless, it's about having an easy way to share screenshots and videos
Wait, we’re supposed to get it until June 10th? Hey, they took my access early!
I mean, yeah, it’s disappointing. But from what we know, if it’s Twitter raising costs to allow that function, it’s disappointing on their end.
Nah dude, we aren’t all still there. I dipped when I couldn’t take it anymore. Absolute cesspool of hate over there now.
I’m hoping they’ll add the functionality to Bluesky or threads or soemthing cause this was one of the best features the switch had. It was always nice seeing other people’s clips uploaded and it was the easiest way to transfer stuff even with the QR thing
Twitter made its API $40,000 USD a month to use. Thats why.
No Twitter is not the biggest that price goes to Instagram so they already have a deal with Facebook so they could replace it with Instagram support
So dumb from Twitter to charge money for increasing the value of the network.
Years ago, I used this feature quite frequently, so it's kinda disappointing.
I wish this was related to the next Nintendo console but I know that it isn't.
Can we be more honest about twitter though? If it was that bad, everyone would have stopped using it.
I do not care about whether you can post to Twitter on the Switch, but I do still care about your feelings on it, Arlo.
Transferring screenshots and videos from your switch to your phone is pretty consistent for me, but depending on your phone it may have features that cause problems if you have data turned on while you do it. If you turn off data before doing it then it may fix your issues
API stands for "apple pie"
Say what you want about twitter, but the Community Note feature is the best thing to happen to the site
The first amendment states that the government cannot impune one for speech against the government or government officials outside of slander/libel (the basis of hate speech BTW) or other potential crimes like incitement of violence (stochastic terrorism and the intent and outcome of hate speech).
No gubmint has ever or will ever support freedom of speech if it contains leftists. This could only exist in an america whete the democrap party gets baned
i think there are some mastodon instance owned by some countries in euroupe, although im not sure if any are publicly joinable but i guess that's the point of the fediverse
tbh i don't even know if a goverment owned social media would work with freedom of speech, how would you moderate trolls and harassment in a politically neutral way?
What if they're going to try Mii Verse again, and they need to remove competition from their platform
EDIT: I commented this before I reached 7:23
giving it's history among other things (Nintendo already knows what those THINGS are) we'll have a better chance of getting private chat with friends vs getting a rebooted miiverse unfortunately 😕
4:55 for me, the send to smartphone feature has always worked.
Its definitely a little convoluted but i have no ossue with it.
Hiw it works is you scan one QR code which contains data for a wifi hotspot your switch turns on, your phone connects to the hotspot and you have to scan another QR code that is a link to a website where you'll find your videos or picture that you then download locally to your phone
Same here, though I have a few friends it just doesn't work for at all. It seems almost random based on the person.
@@edwheezer6231 Its a bit finicky for me. Usually my phone asks me if i want to connect to the hotspot after i connected. I guess as a secutity measure?? Not sure. But i'm given 3 options,
Always connect
Connect only this one time
and Don't connect.
That might be where people grt hung up on or it coupd just be general incompatibiloty stuff I'm not smart enough to understand
X wanting more money, and nintendo said no.
application programming interface
Scary words
I am disappointed, too. I have an account dedicated to Switch & PS4 screenshots. Now, it's going to be useless...
You can technically still export them, it’s just tedious. In my experience, it takes about 5 minutes per video and less time the more screenshots you export
@@minecrafter3448 I'll have to look into it. Maybe it won't be so bad. It's just not going to be as nice and seamless as before
But Twitter doesn’t exist anymore
idk the QR code thing is pretty cool. idk how secure it is, but it's been pretty good at what it sets out to do for me
It works well enough although when it fails it fails hard
The more companies that divest from Xitter, the better
I hope they remake something like miiverse on the next switch to replace common social media or at least have a main platform feature.
Twitter is just a fraction of what we could do with our screenshots and Online functions
You can scan a qr code and instantly send them to your phone, it takes less than a minute. Is this an obscure feature?
Why is everyone gaslighting each other
Well you have to scan it twice no it's no obscure but it's a bit tidious if you have a lot of pictures to show in a hurry
