  • When Russia invaded Ukraine back in February, the distinction was clear, Ukrainians fought Russians. But several months on, there are now Russians fighting on the Ukrainian side, the new 'Freedom for Russia Legion' is made up of Russian nationals now engaging in combat against their compatriots on the battlefields of the Donbas. They join other foreign fighters; Chechens, Dagestanis, Georgians, Belarusians and a whole host of others in the International Foreign Legion of Ukraine, now fighting alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

It also thematically fits with the flag of the Belarusian government in exile (white-red-white). The blue is lighter because it's associated with the Novgorod Republic, which is seen as being much more democratic than other European states that were knocking about during the same era as it

Ironically Novgorod Republc never had any official flag during its existence and the White-Blue-White flag came from one of the official variants of modern Novgorod from 90's that was used only for few years. And so called "democracy" in Novgorog was in fact oligarchy of few wealthy citizens pretty much like current regime))))

The current flag just has too many bad associations - first it was used by the Russian Empire, an objectively despicable state that kept the vast majority of its population in poverty and ignorance, keeping the awful practice of serfdom until as late as 1861; then by Nazi collaborators during WW2; now by a wannabe fascist dictator. While none of those things are the flag's fault, of course, there comes a point where a symbol becomes too tainted to be used in good conscience. The two-headed eagle in particular belongs in the trash bin of history, an inherently imperialist symbol that symbolizes Russia's warmongering and authoritarian tendencies.

This is interesting how history is being made. I just saw a new video on this in the past few days presented by Lviv Media. They interviewed a member of what is now called The Free Russia Legion, using the same flag and patches as in your video. This soldier was very candid. Here's a summation of what he said:
The Free Russia Legion has 2 Battalions, and another one on the way. They are under command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and fight with other Foreign Legion Members from all over the World.
They have 5,000 new Russian applicants, with many of the newly mobilized conscripts surrendering to Ukrainian Forces with the explicit intent of joining The Free Russia Legion.
New recruits for The Free Russia Legion undergo intense military training by the Ukrainian Military. They are supplied and treated just the same as any other member of the Ukrainian Military. They have been fighting on the front lines since the beginning of their engagement and none of them have been captured by RuZzian Forces.
The soldier interviewed said they will fight to the death to help Ukraine defeat Putler's Terrorists, and when Ukraine wins the War and their Freedom from RuZzian Oppression, The Free Russia Legion plan to take their Resistance to Russia.
He said: "We are Putin's worst nightmare".

Liberalism is a fundamental of a modern State: there is a social contract where the State agrees not to repress individual freedoms except if actual crimes are committed. Being opposed to a policy, including war, is not truly a crime in a modern State, unless you let your government become authoritarian. Volunteer or militia units are very poorly equipped overall, and id wager anything this unit is not exception. Theres are reason urkaine is begging for aid in the form of helmets and basic medical equipment. When they have such stuff, it doesnt go to the lowest quality formations. At best, these units are on par with the equipment of russian conscripts, often identical equipment. Plus the russian regular is better equipped than their conscripts. Whats interesting is that russian nationals who dont also have ukranian citizenship arent protected by the rules of war like other soldiers and can be executed as spies or traitors by the russians without violating the rules of war.
