I feel sorry for that beautiful fabric being subject to strong tensile / torsion forces with that 2-tie knots. I wish there was a less destructive way to keep the dhoti at the waist.
I suppose wear and tear in that particular part of the dhoti is very common ?
You're the first one who thought about the dhoti that way!! But you don't have to worry much.. There will not be any significant wear and tear on dhoti because of this. I had worn one same dhoti for many years and it still holds! Also we keep one (cheaper) dhoti for practice and the better one for performances.

I got it from a shop selling classical dance costumes (in Matunga, Mumbai). It is basically a long dhoti having a length of 4 to 4.5 meters.
