Hi just came across your channel and enjoyed watching. Your preparation of bowl blanks was very helpful and your cutting jig and explanation was very helpful. When you seal the blanks how long would they normally take to dry to a point when they would be ready for use?
Even a smallish blank of say 10 inches could take years to dry. I rough turn them green to about 10% wall thickness of the diameter. Those get put in a cardboard box of the blank’s own shavings and it’s sealed shut. A walnut roughed blank would be ok to turn in maybe 6-9months.
So looks like you processed 4 logs. My question is, if your not planning on using them right away should I leave them in log form or process them and seal the ends?
Brian, you can do either. A couple years ago I left several maple logs under my deck with sealed ends for about two years. They spalted really nicely before making them into bowl blanks. For many reasons it’s just my preference to usually make the bowl blanks immediately. Two of which are less chance of bug infestation and I can store the pieces up on a high shelf in my garage. Take care and good luck with your project Michael.
Thanks for getting back to me. I’ll try it both ways and see what works best for me. I’m picking up a walnut tree soon and was wondering how best to process it.
Sorry I forgot to ask this before. What are the dimensions of the plywood for your jig? I know you said 1 inch thick.
My jig is 32” x 23” x 1” customized to fit my Grizzly G0513X2 bandsaw
