Don't forget, this pilot wasn't really a for TV pilot, it was a pilot to present the concept. In other words, it's a sales pitch to make sure networks and advertisers were on board. That's why they probably didn't do much ADR or made strange cuts. They're just cramming all they can to sell the thing.They had to shoot the pilot again after getting notes such as tuning down the violence between humans as seen in the first scene. Audri didn't return so they recast the role. They actually shot two more pilots, one we haven't seen and the one that aired.
That same bowling alley was later used in the Power Rangers: Wild Force episode "The Tornado Spin".
My headcanon is that this episode existed in an alternate universe.

I do appreciate that the violence was only used as a last resort in the official show. This pilot made it seem like the Rangers never even sought out a peaceful option.
I get the feeling they were going for real Teens with Attitude like in the 2017 movie.
Yeah fr, plus in the official pilot, Jason said that karate was not meant to hurt others. In this version, it was like he forgot all about that

Power Rangers' Power Playback was a special hosted by Austin St. John & Walter Jones during the 5th anniversary.
They were talking about how they auditioned, got the roles, worked on the series and saw how the phenomenon grew.
Then they aired for the first time on television, the original pilot episode.
It waa very different.
A little more serious too.
I did like the non-morphed fights at nearly full contact.
Some of this footage was shown in the earliest toy commercials (even morphing effects).
Andrea Dubois was the truth as an martial artist.
Too good in fact.
The 'more money' thing got me though.
Glad they did fixed a few things.
Thuy Trang as the new Trini and JDF as Tommy, both casted at the same time.

I was in my early teens when MMPR jumped off, locked on to what this was and loved it ever since.
It could be due to bias but I'm glad they chose Thuy Trang to play Trini Kwan. She was the best Trini. Also she was so beautiful and an amazing actress. Wish I could have met her.
Actually, Audri turned them down, she didnt want to commit to the whole series.

@@doomsday3659Yeah, I think she would've committed for the right amount, but she had more experience than the others and a family, so the peanuts they were offering weren't worth it.
Audri regret not doing it cause she seen ob TV how over the top popular the series became but oh well that's her lost she could have been another ranger maybe a purple one but I'm happy with Thuy Trang as Trini.
I loved this pilot. It really sells the "teenagers with attitude" and the tone especially the bowling alley scene is weirdly enough how I remember the show being watching it as a child.
David doing the split reminds me of Johnny in his first fight in Cobra Kai, been too long since he did it.

Oh god... that opening song, that's Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers.... they reused that in the movie. I'd forgotten about that completely!
Also, Monty you probably already know this. But speaking of unaired pilots, there's actually ANOTHER unaired pilot that's a bit more budgeted since it uses Ernie's juice bar set. You can actually see a trace of its existence in every opening theme. The opening shows the Rangers being teleported from the "fitness" corner of the juice bar, when the actual episode has them teleported from a flight of stairs during the earthquake. That alternate teleportation is from that second unaired pilot.
Also, sidenote, I don't know if you already have but I hope you guys consider reacting to the fan-made Power Rangers stuff like Bloodline, Unworthy, Moewer Rangers, and Mighty Moshin' Emo Rangers... some of the fan made stuff actually has actors and actresses from the show.
It's interesting to see the differences between this version and what ended up on TV 30 years ago. You didn't mention this, but the Anime playing on the TV before it cut to the news footage of the moon was Samurai Pizza Cats, which Saban had just done an English dub for a year earlier. Also, Zoltar's design, as well as the Rangers's civillian clothes (with Thuy instead of Audri), and the interior of the Command Center were actually used in coloring books and on playing cards throughout MMPR's initial run in 1993-1994, AND the Rangers's civillian look, again, with Thuy instead of Audri, were used in promotional images used on the back of the original five VHS releases, as well as in some of the novelizations of the episodes. If you look at the MMPR season 1 page on the Power Rangers Wiki, you can see the image of the five Rangers with the hairstyles and clothing seen in this episode, with Thuy, sitting on the stairs in the main school interior set in the character section.

Frankly, this was also my first time reacting to unaired pilot. I’ve only seen nitpicks on UA-cam, but never the full episode. So, the theme song was surprising to me as well as the fight scene in the bowling alley

MontyVerse and Nicki, That was an awesome Reaction to the Unaired Pilot of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Also, The Bowling Alley was awesome. Also, My favorite sport is Bowling. Also, The Rangers did took care of the Putties in the Morphed Fight. Also, The Rangers did use the Megazord to take care of the Fly Guy also known as King Sphinx with the Power Sword. Honestly Audri DuBois as Trini did a very good job with her acting. Especially when she fights, she gives off this intense energy.
Thuy Trang's Trini gives off a badass energy as well, but with still a taste of compassion. You could say that it's due to her family teaching her humility, and how she takes her martial arts seriously. But they retroactively had to write that into the script once it got picked up.
Audri's Trini seems like someone who will hurt you and laugh. And that's very intimidating, as well as endearing for a teenage superhero. You could say it's because this version of Trini is more spunky and spontaneous. "Peaceful soul"? Yeah right, Zoltar. Peace was never an option. She woke up and chose violence.
I also feel like this Trini was poised to be illustrated as the best martial artist of the group. She kept getting more fighting shots than even Austin.
@popculturewatch8689 Well, maybe that was the idea from the beginning. Then they realized that just like Ninja Turtles and Transformers, the leader, while not being the best fighter, has to have the most spotlight.
Thuy does show great competency in her martial arts, but for some reason, only Jason is the one teaching a class in the first episode. WHY? Because he's the leader.
@@DAMIENDMILLS I think they realized that they never really showed why Jason was the leader. Him being a instructor added to it. He had poise, wisdom and skills above the others. DuBois may have just been better at choreography at the time. They went through so many changes before air. Who knows.
@popculturewatch8689 That is so true. I mean how do you just randomly put these elements together and suddenly come out with the #1 Kid's show in America? It was a total crapshoot, but it was like lightning in a bottle
Yeah Audri DuBois as Trini had a lot of spunk and attitude and she was clearly a tomboy but they had to revamp her character when Thuy Trang took the role of Trini making her smart, feminine and humble with a sense of honor and I prefer Thuy Trang version of Trini not cause she's the Trini we all know but her personality stands out from the others like the other 5 rangers.
Not sure if it's in your plans, but I'd love to see you all react to the original Zyuranger series. It's a fun narrative and the approach of the episodes is really interesting
I did notice the song playing in the opening of the bowling alley was Higher Ground by Red Hot Chili Peppers. The same song was in the skydiving scene in Power Rangers the Movie.
The part 9:07 always cracks me up, just one big laughing fit.
It's fun to see where the series' concept started from.

I haven't watched the unaired pilot in a long time. It's interesting to see the differences, and I wonder what changes were made from studio notes vs. what was changed due to a slightly larger budget

I'm a Power Rangers fan from Thailand. I want you to react Super Sentai op which is a Power Ranger from Japan.
Legend says Zoltar secretly tried to recruit a Power Ranger in 1988, a 12 year old Boy named Josh Baskin,
Believing no child could ever become a Ranger, he attempted to speed his age up to make him ready should Rita Repulsa ever return.
Zoltar however gave up and returned Josh to his proper age after seeing him playing around on a giant keyboard and attempting to court a woman twice his age, which is not the way of a Power Ranger
I think the intro themesong was added after but could be wrong. Also find it odd both Jason and Kim were bowling left handed since they're actually right handed.
Its possible they pulled all the stops in terms of weapons and bosses to show what kind of show it would be but didnt put much into the special effects in case it wasnt picked up.

The Rangers didn't start that, Kims chilli was an accident and that guy literally was sexuallity assaulting her when the Rangers started swinging, justified imo.

It’s no criffing wonder why this pilot of mighty Morphin power rangers did not air on television! The part where the Rangers called their dinosaurs was just plain weak! It just sounded like they were not enthusiastic on calling them out. I honestly liked the premiere episode of day of the dumpster better than this load of crap!
This is just one a reasons why I hate the hack/lazy Power Rangers were racists with the color things. Walter chose and wanted to be the black ranger. David was supposed to be the red ranger at first. The first yellow ranger was not Asian. Its crazy that we almost got no Asian representation for the Rangers at first knowing the source material. We got a badass Asian female lead and black superhero kids like me could aspire to. That's awesome.

Exactly, they knew Austin was the natural leader, that's why David was made blue. The second group shown in the audition tapes was very similar.

Few changes needed to be made before airing in 1990's standards like too much V and put in more Billy and og Tirana not in yet and voltar to Zorn changed little bit #unairedmmpr
