Making sure the two opposing corners sit on the line so it is exactly 45 degrees. Use the edge of the square board to lay the first two planks, work from there. Way easier.
The tape is used to keep the floor joints tight and to prevent the floor from shifting on you when you're installing the floor. It's best to stay off the areas that are being installed but in many instances you can't because you have to spread the glue.

Herringbone should be framed out much more. At least 20/80, frame/center. Wall to wall looks like a gym floor.
