Many a venue suffered beautifully under the weight and sonic eloquence of Mr Phil Lesh- how lucky are we to have not only lived during the moment this band was on the stage? not just to witness but to be willing to take a chance and drop till we danced-Cheers to Phil!!!!! we are Eternally Grateful Max Love
At that point in time, Phil had been playing bass for only 7 years. Listen to his minor breakdown at 2:46, followed by the major turnaround. Also listen to his synchopated popping slightly before and after the downbeat at various points while tracking and returning to the actual beat at the end of phrases. The brilliance of a classically trained composer and virtuoso bass player. He was the Dead's musical director. What a brilliant musician and great soul. Imagine the reunion between Phil, Jerry, Pig, Hunter, and Barlow way up beyond the Stars! Rock on, Phil!
Hey Now Thanks for posting this... RIP PHIL LESH .... Up in Oregon, where i happen to live, the clouds the afternoon he passed were super trippy ... thin lines on boxes of rain that sat on crest of waves... meanwhile over in another area, a really spooky looking conglomerate cloud of a bunch of eyes of the world... one huge eye, in particular, Phils raised eye.... Glad i had the pleasure of seeing him a bunch of times, with Jerry and GD and many others... i would love to hear more Isolated tracks like this, esp Other One from 6-18-74 and Help Slip
Phil wasn’t just the best bass player, he was an EXPERIENCE ! Words can’t describe the feelings when Phil’s subsonic bass rattled not only our bodies but the building itself ! Love You Phil !
Thank you Phil I can not overstat 6:54 e how you have been a beacon in my life. After Jerry you kept Philling the air with songs. The Q is still my favorite band since Jerry. My daughter plays the base now I'm pretty sure it's because she's been seeing you since before birth. NFA. Playing in that big jam in the sky with Jerry
Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell ❤💀 🌹 Mr Lesh left us this Friday, but his spirit lives on beyond space and time. What a blast we're all gonna have when we too get to the divine realm of the Grateful Dead.

Wow , that sounds deep into the Philzone. I love you and miss him . Love to all, I hope we find kind folks on our next ride. Bye for now, ol' Pride of Cucamonga !
Inacurate Photo. Phil was playing "Big Brown" at Kesey's Farm -Not "Mission Control Bass" A.K.A. "Osiris", and "The Omega" (which was completed in '74 by Rick Turner). This Photo is taken from 1976 -Oakland Colosseum. Rest in Peace Phil.
@@patferris3640 No, he was playing "Big Brown" -a four-string Guild Starfire Hollow-Body Bass heavily modified by The Alembic Instrument Company. The electronics in that thing are incredible. There is an EXCELLENT book written by Blaire Jackson called "Grateful Dead Gear" published in 2006 which chronicles every piece of equipment, guitar, and P.A. System 1965-1995. If you're Gear-Geeky, I highly recommend. A lot of mysteries are solved in that book. You'll Dig it for sure.
@@stevecakouros1482 but at the end 13:44 he's hitting a low B. DEFINITELY a 5 or 6 string bass (I'm a bass player) Last note is a low D ... a full step below the lowest note on a 4 string. I just did some research and he wasn't yet playing a 6 or 5 string during this time (started in 82), but he either had an octave pedal or was borrowing a 5 or 6 string for this song. I'm certain of it.
We always used to joke around and say that if for some weird reason, we were wrong about Jerry being God, then Phil Definitely Was! Rest in Peace Phil Lesh.
Thanks for putting this together David. As another 4 stringer from Marin this is a pretty luxurious gift you've given us. So much could be said. So much we can think when we consider Phil's passing. But it very well could be that, like the rest of living, it's really all about just being here now. And here we have the heart of the matter made so accessible... be well ☮🐉👁
I have a pair of aki voice of the theater speakers in my shop. When I need to get rid of the snow off the roof I crank up PHIL full blast and within a few minutes it slides off. Thanks PHIL you're the best RIP MY BROTHER
I was at closing of winterland and when PHIL went deep plaster started falling off the celling and nailed the guys next to me he went down but got right back up and had plaster dust all over him funnier than shit!!@

Most inventive, unique bass player. Can't imagine anyone else in the GD than Phil. 😢
Classy fella .. held it down to the end….more the 3rd guitar player than a bassist 🤪 good times
Yeah, I cried when I learned the news. Thank you, Phil!
Only Love Can Phil💖
That was a lovely treat! I could always hear Phil’s notes emerge during a song, but it’s really special to hear him like this. Thank you!

We waited for the light of day and yet another night
Never the same, the paths we followed led us home
Remembering in snippets what had not been seen or heard
Before or ever after again and again and again
And never would be again, in that order
What would you want us to do, whilst you sleep
Find the value in it all, while going home
Or, was it all just a psychedelic dream
We sought on replay, until we too went out the window
No pane made falling splinter free yet longer
Such a long time to fall, till we hit the ground
Running on a dream, that is difficult to re-create
Just enjoy in slumber, though one may wonder
What was really going on?

Who knows where or how we will end up, anyway
Today the accolades and concerts fill the screen
Oh, Bertha I just gotta move
Though it be a hard run I know you care
Despite what may be around the corner
I just can’t stop gotta get on
From place from mind from body
Though I fall, I hear a voice a calling
Telling me I will land upon my knees
In thornless Roses, picked by gypsies in the night
Bringing light to day as I remember to inhale deeply
Was it all that dancing that let me sleep so peacefully?
I can only wish it for all

He's definitely playing at least a 5 string bass on this
