After numerous listens I have to say "all end" is my favourite Autechre track ever.
I was pretty depressed another day, but after a listening session to "all end" in full darkness I had this great cathartic feeling, and was relieved. Amazing and uplifting track. So grateful for it.
Wow, I’ve never thought of listening to this album in complete darkness... might try that
Exai was 2 hours.
Elseq was 4 hours.
The NTS Sessions were 8 hours.
Doesn't that mean that the next one will be 16 hours?
Surprise surprise we got an update of AE_LIVE it is now *_28 hours long_*
i hope
splesh that gonk button
I appreciate your honest response to ae, and think it touches on my feelings, as well.
That said, violvoic is my favorite. It does continually change throughout, and deserves to be listened to at high volume on headphones. It turns into a truly physical experience.
And that's why ae is great. Different strokes, and all.
Keep up the good work.
agreed
I believe you should skip listening to something if you are not interested in it. You get yourself burned out, and you ruin the future chance of you fully enjoying it. It's all about timing.
The timing for me to enjoy this video was very good though :).
The comment about Acid Mwan Idle being like being stuck at a crossroads of a passing freight train for 12 minutes had me laughing out loud
I actually started listening to Autechre when this airing at it was an amazing experience to jump in to the community and dive in to their discography. And I think All End was best experienced live. It was so surreal. But overall really fun review!
This album is super important to listen to in a quiet place with headphones.
Welp.... this was a great video, and honestly might be one of your best overall. I completely get why you didn't want to talk about this initially, but I'm glad you did! I'm now kinda curious about this project, but I have absolutely no idea if I'm willing to listen to all 8 hours, but certain tracks do sound very interesting overall.
Haha, I love that you kept your OG pronunciation. ✌🏼
Nikola Demitri same
T1a1 and turbile epic casual are so memorable, even in a massive sea of ambient-esque experimental raw electronic landscapes with similar structure.
Not a huge Autechre fan, as I just started listening 3 months ago, but I never got burned out listening to all 8 hours of NTS Sessions. Just listen to each part individually over a week or so and go in with the mindset that would be used with ambient music.
9.0/10
Pronouncing Autechre as Ow Teacher now, thx.
Also nice review.
Holy shit I really didn't think you were gonna do this one. Absolute maniac
I know you're not a massive Ae fan, but would be amazing if you could do their discography. Or, if not, at least more reviews of some of their more seminal releases like Exai and Confield.
Some of your least favorite tracks on NTS (and also elseq) are some of my favorites (and vice versa), which I feel just goes to prove the strength of both of these projects.
Hang on, that’s Seaburn’s pfp! I know too much, they gotta kill me now
@@granthamilton1918 you found me :x
Nice review. I'm proud of you for making it through the whole 8 hours without being a diehard fan. I definitely agree that NTS Sessions is one of those 'for the fans' releases. Is it my favorite thing they've done? Not currently, but it is still early. It used to take me until their next release came out to appreciate or 'get' the previous release. There are a few low points, but for the amount of content they are surprisingly few and far between.
Ironically, for me, it was several of the shorter songs that wore me out. Songs like fLh, sinistrailAB air, splesh, mirrage just didn't do it for me. The only longer song that I wasn't the biggest fan of was turbile epic casual, stpl idle. Maybe some of these songs will grow on me in time. bqbqbq certainly took a while.
Best thing I’ve heard from these guys (aliens) so far is “Autechre Live in Glasgow’ here on YT. It’s a trippy mindfuck of a set, electronic sounds and rhythmical/mechanical / bliss. 👍🏻🎶
"all end" is good to sleep to
Your starting summary of Autechre was spot on. They are similar in that respect to Plaid. Their music is good but never am I in the mood to listen to them; but when I do it's not disappointing. It's weird. Autechre went too far for this old man. Could not follow them into that level of abstraction.
lol. though imo Plaid is not even close to as bad in that respect
Agreed, Plaid is a much more well-rounded and comfortable listening experience. Autechre really is an acquired taste and requires a specific mood, but it always has something good in store if you do decide to listen to it.
Hopefully it was clear it wasn't music styles I was comparing but listening behaviour. Autreche and Plaid are only the same in terms of my own listening behaviour. It's rare for them to be played but when they are it's always pleasantly surprising (talking about Autechre early releases).
@@sweetwheatsy I can't listen to plaid that often becuase I'm overwhelmed by their melodies for a while, but its just sickly sweet after a while. I can't explain it, their melodies are like stuffing yourself with chocolate. Hugely addictive and enjoyable; until it isn't, and you feel ill.

I find these reviews really intriguing if not enticingly interesting. Autechre are inspiring. The mixes that I make are horrible, but I still make them anyway just for fun to explore what can be done with random sounds and my computer. Exploring the possibilities of sound makes life far more interesting like hiking in the wilderness. Otherwise I simply go to work and go home five days a week. BOOOORRRING!
I disagree with a good chunk of what you said but I do totally agree with the idea of separating it into chunks, its a bit mental to listen to this thing all the way through, though im sure someone could totally do that and enjoy it. NTS 1 was my personal fav I think. I would honestly be pretty happy as well if they'd release another hour long album that was more of a concise statement, cause absorbing all this stuff, as fun as it is, is pretty god damn overwhelming.
I did a little better with one sitting... if I take breaks in between, they have to be long ones...
just a hard album to be familiar with
'column thirteen' is so fucking good. I still have trouble processing it. I hope that I never understand it.
carltonrandom same it’s one of my favourites on this thing
I would've loved to hear the NTS music paired down into two full CD discs of "miniatures" in fashion of Quaristice. I am a HUGE Autechre fan, but the expanded run time of alot of these tracks really don't lend themselves to this approach. See their Untilted album on how longer tracks can work while frequently shifting the direction of the song in dramatic ways!
jesus man, you are a fucking beast for this, props
Well, I cant see why it is necessery to listen all material at once. Its more like reading a book (big one) then, I dont know, grasping individual aestetical and emotional experience. Its simple different album format and we should not project our expectations according the album format we are used to. And I can't see why Autechre fans would want to critisize you - I concider myself Autechre fan but in Elseque review I didnt find any reasons for that. It was a very good review (havent listened NTS sessions yet but this review also gives interesting insights).
Well 8 hours I can understand, but for just an hour album, I think its a good idea to listen to the entire thing. You get to have the entire experience. You also dont have to directly give it time, but you can put it on while playing a game or driving or something
Exactly. One hour album is for one -part listening.I was reffering specifically to this and previous AAutechre albums.
Avtekr 1-10 would be like 24 hours long. (I don't know if they'll gonna release this but it would take a whole day to listen to this)
"all end" is from the PoV of The Void from Solace :D
Now there's an odd thought
IMPRESSED!
I think Autechre may get a chuckle out of you (and other reviewers)torturing yourself for this.
I bought 4 out of random decision making without hearing it beforehand. It is perfect background music for writing papers in APA format, and other roboticising tasks. I like everything on 4, but I must admit that in the 3 weeks since I bought this I have yet to hear All End without being interrupted or needing a bathroom break. Column 13 is spectacular. I enjoyed your honest, insightful, and often funny review.
"it is perfect background music for writing papers in APA format" LOL 💯% accurate
I was disappointed that this wasn't on Spotify or Beatport. But 8 hours!? Damn, son!
I listened to these sessions individually over the course of several days and I guess that made me less sick of them but still it was a lot.
Do kind of wish you gave north spiral more attention, I really liked that one
Despite the length like Elsq (and what you said in the review) it has more then enough gems to make up for it. I think sessions 1 & 4 are my favourites from the bunch while 2 and 3 are probably my least favourites good video!
I get here with only 5 view on the video...... DEAR GOD I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT
dude you killed me ha ha!!!
I preordered the CD and the shipping date was pushed back again to August 13th
Kudos for your work... Would like to watch your review about Young American Primitive self titled Lp... Also Ulrich Schnauss_Far Away Trains Passing By..
I like your videos
Interesting to hear the opinion of a new Autechre album from the perspective of a young, undeveloped mind.
fersher
The NTS sessions should be a cataloge where you can pick out your fav tracks to make your own album.
I wonder if all those tracks would still be picked...
Quality beats quantity, felt they didn't try compared to they're early works. I love autechre but I have a love hate relationship with the band. Going to listen to some autechre lol.
someday I want you to listen to and review Diabarha's Confession of Lazarus.
I think that you're more appreciated by these folks for your patience than maligned for your disapproval.
I fucking love this album. Admittedly, I was listening to a lot of vaporwave. And I was listening to a lot of Coil, namely their Time Machines stuff, so I was already near that zone.
I would consider it a mistake to listen to this in one go. It's asking too much. Most of all, albums seem to not be made to be heard from beginning to end these days. The last album made that I still listen to from beginning to end is Hot Dreams, and even that isn't 8 hours long.
I gotta' say though, 'column thirteen' is one of the most perfect and immaculate things they've ever made. It still surprises me.
only my first listen was all squeezed into one day, all my other listens were spread out over several days & it was definitely better that way. but I didn't score these based on my first listen of them, otherwise they'd have been significantly lower. I understand this is meant as a radio show and not really an album to be listened to in one go and I'm pretty sure I even said that in the video, but length notwithstanding I just personally don't think this is the absolute best work these guys have to offer and that's just where my opinion stands
also as an aside, while I know it's not applicable to NTS being as long as it is, in general "albums seem not to be made to be heard from beginning to end these days" is a really lame excuse for not being able to hold people's attention imo. if it's advertised as a studio album I'm going to judge it as such, length be damned
There's this gentleman that had been speaking of something to the effect of 'listener fatigue' a channel called 'deep cuts', if I remember. Access to music being nothing like it used to be, he talked about how there is just so much of it available, how buying an album used to make it easier to make exceptions for the low points. You could even learn to love the shittier tracks, based simply on how hard it was to take that half-hour drive to the nearest record store to buy that one - I don't know - Boards of Canada album. Hell, my own mother had to drive me to Corpus Christi to buy the fucking White Album for my 14th birthday. And it cost money to hear it.
After napster, and itunes, and soulseek, and youtube, and so forth, it's more a la carte than it used to be, more mise en place.
That being said, you are correct, it is a lame excuse, but ambience being coined as 'furniture music' is no accident. Or 'ambience' being coined in the first place.
This may come across as another lame excuse, but I don't believe this album to be made in order to draw one's direct attention throughout. Your favorite track, 'all end', is an example of that. I just zone out and drool to that one. It hearkens to those rather lame 90's soundscapes that used to be piped into art gallery exhibits and late-night radio stations. Keeping in mind that The Future Sound of London was trying people's patience well before this with their ISDN transmissions, not to mention The Orb's consistent lack of brevity. And Eno.
I'm pretty sure that it's wrong, but it's difficult to care when an awesome act throws that much at you in one go. It's like bukakke for audiophiles.
But, I don't remember you mentioning Max/MSP, the program they used.
I watch Deep Cuts and left a response on that listener fatigue video back when it came out, but I'll reiterate some of what I said there: while listener fatigue is definitely a thing I've experienced, I don't think it's related to the amount of music that's available to us in the streaming age, since it was something that occasionally happened to me even back when I only had like 8 bands I regularly listened to. I think it's something that just happens when you dedicate so much time just to listening to music, you naturally get burnt out, and taking a break from music entirely for the rest of the day has always gotten me out of it.
I don't think listener fatigue is something that applies to NTS, this wasn't a project that made me sick of listening to music in general, it's just incredibly inconvenient to listen to as one package and like I've said before I personally don't consider any of it to be Ae's top tier work. and I am also a huge Orb fan and Brian Eno fan who has enjoyed this kind of music before so it's not that I don't get it, it just didn't resonate with me on a deeper level like some of their stuff has
obviously it's just opinion though. you obviously got more out of this stuff than I did and that's perfectly fine. but no need to write off my opinion because I "listened to it wrong" or something like that, I even scored this project separately as 4 otherwise unrelated projects, as a whole ignoring the format/length and as a whole taking into account the format/length. just didn't personally think it was anything incredible and that's all
Nah, I would not accuse you of not getting it or listening to it wrong. That's the equivalent of someone in a political discussion accusing the other of stupidity or throwing in Hitler for the sake of gauntlet. It ruins everything.
You are right about the album. It's too goddamn long and too damn much, but I don't think that the two of these men exist on a level of understanding that measures the limits of their work, nor the potential. They have become a channel of sorts, an individual station. It might not even belong to them anymore. They very well may no longer have control of what they are doing, a thought which makes me horny as gangbusters.
The album that you preferred, Incunabula, was back when there was some semblance of rules. They do not know what that is anymore. At the very least, since Chiastic Slide, their music requires more than listening, it requires study. And thank God for them for making it that way. It was necessary.
It's rather like casting a wide net, doing too much in order to do anything at all. We have plenty of room for it, as long as one is willing to try. For 8 or so hours.
Also, it's most likely not listening to music that wears one down, it's reviewing it. Having a public opinion takes a fuckload out of one's fair-minded human spirit. I do not envy your profession.
While I had mentioned The Future Sound of London, there was this neat album that they had made called 'The Woodlands of Old', under the name Yage about ten or so years past. You should listen to it.
Not to review it, only to hear it as a neat album.
yeah this was my first autechre alblum obviously this was a way to get into them
AE_LIVE actually came out to 28 hour long recordings… I listened to them all over the course of under a month… oh gosh. It was….an experience…
i took my time and i still am not done after like 6 months but i really like them, take time to digest them
Maybe you could do a discography review of Autechre one day?
that "one day" might be a lot sooner than you think...
I got into this quicker and easier than elseq. Not sure why. Maybe my ears got accustomed.
Autechre Tri Repetae
review the conet project
they’ve gotten exponentially more complicated over recent releases
idk if I'd call this more complicated than elseq tbh. just bigger
The Wonky Angle I just wouldnt say exponentially
nym5qu17 yeah
You look vaguely like Carl Wilson in your thumbnail.
AUTECHRE WORKS BEST IN THE REALM WITHOUT WORDS
To this day, I cannot decide if All End is the most boring song ever created by humankind or a stroke of absolute genius.
four of seven be like: beeum beuum biieeum boowap biieum biiium beeum boowop
Or as the UA-cam subs pronounce: "out occur"
i like tri repetae and exai
all end > your haircut
and tt1pd is the biggest achievement of mankind. At least of Samuel and Rick.

All end becomes a lot less impressive when you realize the entire track is just a drawn out section from bladelores

AWWWWW-TECH-ERRRRRRRRRRRRR
Cruh it's pronounced Cruh, not Ker
MTS AIRMASS, Maybe you're just making a joke, but Rob and Sean did, in fact, say you can pronounce "autechre" however you want.
CometCourse Yeah I'm joking, but the first two letters are officially pronounced ah
MTS AIRMASS, That's true.
3RD COMMENT IN ALL CAPS WITH AN EXCLAMATION POINT!
wait what the fuck a matt parker reference lmao ur awesome now
also you oddly seem to have pretty opposite opinions, i've seen north spiral, 9 chr0 and all end as some of the favorite tracks and turbile epic casual, stpl idle as a least favorite. i like all end but i've only heard it once and i feel like it would work better hiking like this guy did www.reddit.com/r/autechre/comments/8fjy03/what_i_was_watching_while_listening_to_nts_4/dy43xo8/
If you didn't enjoy it its your own fault for listening to them for 8 fucking hours straight. It's completely the wrong approach and AU themselves wouldn't expect you to.
AUdio TECHnology REsearch
"aw-tech-ree" is a new one I'll admit
Just listen to an interview with the band and see how they pronounce it... otherwise.... who cares? about anything said correctly?
Just listened to the full new Hybrid album and somewhat disappointed. Was not expecting such a mainstream and pop sounding album as this is. No interesting soundscapes or anything-just pure pop/dance music with nothing interesting about it. You need to check it out- was sort of shocked by the direction this band went.
Ahhhh-Chris Healings - Sound Design, keyboards, programming has left the group. You can definitely see how influential he was to their sound! They now sound like top 40 mainstream pop fodder! So sad. You need to check it out -im interested in what you think.
oh come on, is it REALLY that much of a shock after Disappear Here though? it's barely more mainstream than that album
I find it a lot more mainstream and pop then I did with "Disappear". Yes, "Disappear" moved to a more mainstream sound but not as blatant as this new album. I can listen to "disappear" as a full album-this new album was hard for me to listen to-often grating and annoying in its top 40 wannabe sound. At times it sounded like Stevie Nicks trying to do an electronica album-lol.
wow ok, your loss. personally enjoying the hell out of it but whatever
the dudes themselves say "Aw-Tekker". it's not that hard
Based Warp and Autechre filtering out the plebs by putting out an £120 album.

Awe-teker ... as in *AWE*some - *TECH* - *errr*?
Get out
Don't let fanboys intimidate you. Autechre used to be 90% great and 10% unlistenable. Now they're 10% great and 90% unlistenable.
Old autechre used to have these premeditated hooks that would come in and grab out of of the noise, now a lot of it is just noise.
They've become a parody of themselves, a musical version of post modern art.
Vice versa, you became a pre-historic listener.
